Howdy ladies and gents. Thank you for all your warm welcomes to the 'verse. I have two things for you today that I hope youll take the time to listin to, a story, and a proposal to speed along the resurection of the series.

All my life I have volunteered, I've been to Texas cleaning up flood damaged houses...I've seen miles of shelter material in Ohio and precut several tons of it to shelter the victems of the ethnic clensing in Kosovo some years back. and I have prepared hundreds of tool kits, trucks, meal rations and other essentals for hundreds of other missions operated by the disaster relief organization known as Service International...volunteering is a wonderful thing, it says something about you and about your values when you work for something without being told to or rewarded for...it means that you love something...Please read this post to the end, Please if you love the show and want it back please put up with my poetic reflections and here my proposal and just read, flame me, wave me, love me, hate me, The 'verse is my home now and I want to help. just read...

I'm brand new to the 'verse but feel I belong here as if I had always been here...this is my story...

Rainy sunday after noon, screend in porch and nothing to do, I'd just kicked off my tennis shoes.
my father tells me to sit down, we're going to watch a movie. I sat down in my chair in the living room and he turned on the tv and I saw Serenity for the first time...it was...interesting. Why did that teenage girl look like she was sweating all the time?
"Whats with the girl and why is she...OH GOD" I say as River suddenly "ticks" and starts kicking people...I'm a student of the martial arts and her grace was beautiful (Barely though had I recoverd from laughing at Kaylees infamous "twixt my nethers" line) but it wasnt the movie that got me interested, it was my fathers reaction to it. Dad sat forward on the couch...a look of anticipation on his face...the whole movie...My father never shows emotion, never betrays what he is thinking and never gives out heavy praise (which he did during the whole movie.) My dad explained that "In the series you never knew what river was going to do next." well the movie ended and life went on until this christmas when sci-fi aired the first episode of the DVD...I fell in love as soon as Mal ends the barfight by having Wash fly Serenity up threatining to "blow another crater in this tiny moon". at that moment I realized that the story I had been trying to tell in my own writing about what I termed "space rats" (Gypsys tramps and theivs in space ships) had already been told and in a much better fasion than I ever could. a day later I was walking around our little mall, in our little town, and something pulls me to the music/video store, I cant say what...Shepherd Book would understand...I look under the F section and there for 25 dollers is the complete series. I bought it and took it home and sat spellbound laughing and hurting and connecting with charecters and ideas that make us fundamentally human. the need to wander, the need for freedom of movement, the need to make a diffrence no matter how small...but most of all a need to be part of something small and chaotic yet strong and effective...the need for family. the crew had that...and you...we, now, the fans have that...I spent all my money on the series including some credit I didnt have...but as Early floated out in space and said the last line of the series...it just wasnt enough.
My change jar was full of pennys, it turned out to be just enough to rent Serenity...but this time I was a Browncoat, this time was diffrent. This time, I watched, and did alot of crying starting at about when Rivers face lights up and she says "My turn." (I'm getting choked up right now) tears came freely as Mal says the final message in the movie. Serenity needed my help and I was going to be there for my ship.

that was the story heres the proposal

I'm starting a group called the Volunteer Browncoats, people dedicated to donating volunteer unpaid labor on any Serenity/Firefly endevour. Serenity needs an army and thats what the Volunteer Browncoats are, the ones who will not sit idly behind keyboards or TV screens, but will get out there and actually "do" for Joss and our beloved show. anybody who will work for free doing what ever Joss needs us to do. you will find that I am a passionate person and when I ally myself with you...theres no power in the 'verse that can stop me. and if we put together, there will be no power in the 'verse that can stop us

So there it is friends my passion laid bare, if any of you can pledge even an hour or a day or a vacation to Joss and our dear ship reply to this post and become a Volunteer Browncoat ready to DO what ever it takes to bring back the series and get our old girl back in and on the air.

I'm a Volunteer Browncoat...lets go get the sky back

One thing that stands out in your post to me, and I cannot understand about these boards and the fans right now is:

We could and should be doing more!

We should be using our numbers in a campaign to the Universal/Fox executives.

There must be millions of Serenity fans, people who loved the movie and probably never even heard of Firefly. If we were able to reach more of them and let them know about the series, and how the fans got the movie made, im sure they would help and support us.

Recently I have been posting about Serenity and Firefly on forums I regularly visit, like this Americas Army forum for example: http://aaotracker.com/thread.php?threadid=184114

A topic we should have pinned on this forum is one where we have a list of things fans can do to help Serenity/Firefly get back on the screen again e.g

Wavecards - Where to buy and where to send.
Email addresses - Fox/Universal executive emails, so we can mass mail them.
Letters - Adresses of everyone we can mail and a copy of letter they can mail, if they don't feel confident in their writing abilities like me
Forums - Posting on every forum that has people, letting them know about Serenity/Firefly.

The internet is a wonderful thing, we need to take advantage of it and use it to gather support. Lets educate and harass until we get our sequel or show back!

I'm glad you agree and I say lets start building a well organized national/international army of people who are committed to certian tasks involved with bringing the show back. an organization with diffrent departments like fundraising, advertizing, bloging, Firefly evangelisim...we could take a lesson from the recent "charismatic" or "evangelical" Christian movement. organizing large showings of Serenity or Firefly at theater or near theater like venues(Make is a much to do like the Rocky Horror Picture Show but with more clothes and less make-up) we could even cater the events (Volunteers could cook), give things away, anything that would get new people into the 'verse.

Internet is a wonderful thing, but as I know from years of volunteer expereince, there is still no substitute for a handshake and an oral invitation to come and see.

Try throwing partys that are just regular parties (with plenty of Designated Drivers if there is to be any drinking...these could be volunteers too.) a massive party with Firefly or Serenity as a side show...sometimes a subtle gesture can be stronger than the loudest words. But all that takes organization, deligation, webspace, networking, accountability, time, and effort...volunteering.

Malcom Reynolds believed in something...he believed in freedom and independence, the right to choose your own path, even though it may not be understood or accepted by all, there were many who believed he should let other people dictate how he should live, but Malcom Reynolds disagreed, and he believed in that disagreement...he believed so much that he believed it was worth his time and attention, so he was a volunteer in his service to the independence...a Volunteer Browncoat.

I believe in a story that tells us about ourselves in all our humanity, both good and bad, a vision of where we're going, and where we have been...I'm willing to volunteer my services, time and attention to that preserving and resurecting that story...I'm a Volunteer Browncoat.

If we really love the show, the idea, and really TRULY want it back more than anything else...then assembeling into an organized body is the only thing that will get the word out that this story demands attention, and show those who make the decisions...that they can take our love...and they can take our land...but they cant take our sky

My name is David, I'm less than a week old in the 'verse...and I'm a Voulunteer Browncoat!!
is there anybody out there who is with me? anybody who will struggle with me? Are there any other Vounteer Browncoats?

Some other folks I am sure will follow along with current projects to keep the 'verse alive. Right now the word direct from the folks that created the 'verse is to hold the line, recruit folks, buy the dvd's and official merchandise, we have a continuation of hte story coming out in comicbook form, later this year.

Browncoats are the shiniest folks in the 'verse

You're in luck, ShotGun Larry.
There is an annual charity event each June 23rd (or thereabouts) to coincide with Joss Whedon's birthday. Cities worldwide show Serenity on the big screen and raise money for Whedon's favorite charity, Equality Now.
In 2006 we raised over $65,000. And 2007 brought over $114,000.
One of the participating cities is Tampa, FL. And, from what I understand, they are looking for volunteers to help with next summer's screening.
Head over to www.cantstoptheserenity.com and check out the postings for Tampa. I'm sure they would be happy to put you to work.
I've done plenty of work to help promote this 'verse. But Can't Stop the Serenity has been the most rewarding experience so far.

Welcome to FFFans. All I can say is man, you've got it bad. Unfortunately, it's likely to get worse. A few people have given much to the Firefly saga, especially the original 'Coats; largely responsible for getting a movie made, but most have just tagged along. Some folks ( not saying me ) don't care if there's any more Firefly. Some folks say it's a rare treat now, and widespread and expanded fandom will ultimately just ruin it, like everything else that's "popular" in the world. Your personal energy is admirable.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I applaud your enthusiasm, David, and wish you the best of luck in whatever you decide is the right way to approach this task. However, I would like to reiterate what artcat said, there have been many Browncoats doing great works for quite a few years, so you need to learn more about what has been done, what has worked and what has not. That's not to say that you won't be able to bring a fresh approach and workable ideas to the mix, just understand that you are far from the first new recruit to come aboard with grand ideas about bringing back the best show in the 'verse. Good luck, and I'll be sure to keep an eye on any ideas you lay before us.

Oh, I almost forgot. You can check the Guerrilla Marketing section on the homepage. There are plenty of ideas there on how to spread the word.
One of the original Browncoats is a wonderfully creative woman who goes by 11th Hour. She has designed poster, handbills and bookmarks to be placed around town.
RayCheetah started a program called Firefly for Firefighters. Browncoats are encouraged to donate copies of Firefly & Serenity to local firehouses.
Some folks have donated copies to their local libraries to make sure the 'verse stays in circulation.
Nathan Fillion (Capt. Mal) is part of a literacy program called Kids Need to Read. Fans of his help promote it through auctions and word-of-mouth.
Poke around and I'm sure you'll find something going on that interests you. Or, if you start your own project, let us hear about it.
