I was noticing in the You Might Be A Browncoat If thread that several of us mentioned having used Firefly inspired names for pets. Thought it might be interesting to conduct a very informal poll and who we've adopted, and how we picked the character we named them after.

I've got a hamster named Simon, 'cause, well, hamsters is nice.

Well he's not really a 'pet' pet but I have a yearling Arabian named Jayne Cobb. I picked it because he always keeps looking at me like I owe him something.

Well i certainly can't name any of my pets Kaylee (thats my name, we'd get confused!)

and all my pets are too hold for a firefly name but i'm looking to get some new ones. maybe i'll name it Shiny, or Jayne, depending on its demeanor.

As I mentioned in that thread, I named my new male GSD (German Shepherd dog), 'Jayne'; because while he's a wicked great beast, he's also more than a little goofy. He's really good at keeping two-legged varmints off the property; he smells everything; and licks or eats everything he can get at (he'd definitely stick a finger in your birthday protein-cake if he had fingers).

I think he'd eventually be even more like Jayne-the-character, too, except I'm planning on 'having 'em off' in the next month or two. The canine equivalent of the Heart o' Gold girls are gonna have to look elsewhere for satisfaction...

When and if I get another dog -- hopefully not for several years -- I've already got the name picked out. Y'all are welcome to it, in the meantime...

Almost forgot! Your friend and mine, my dog Jayne likes it when I sing "The Dog Called Jayne" and insert his name at various spots into "The Ballad of Serenity", as we watch the DVD's. He doesn't 'sing' along (yet), but he does just about twist his head off lookin' all perplexed at me...

Well, like so many others, my pets predate Firefly, so none of them have a FF name, but I did name my car "Serenity". Went so far as to have the name airbrushed on the fenders.

Very cool. Glad to know I'm not the only one who has a car with a name. My car is Giles, because I'm in library school, so I wanted a librarian-type name. It's amazing how few famous librarians there are!

I do know River will comment on River last, and I've already got hers written...

I don't claim clairvoyance, so don't blame me if my vision and JW's differs pretty significantly. It's just fun to do.

Anyway, glad you enjoy them. Be the envy of the BDM tail-gate party! Collect all nine! (zoid takes his medication and waits calmly until the desire to write advertising copy subsides)

YOSAFBRIDGE

I'm a newbie here, but I just adopted a new puppy I've named Zoe. She's a fiesty terrier/shepherd mix, mostly black but with some brown mixed in, and she has brown boots, and pretty brown eyes. She was abandonded in a local dog park (or perhaps she was fighting for her independence...?) so I figured the name fit.

It was also used by "Jack McKinney" (a gestalt composed of James Luceno and [the late] Brian Daley) in the Robotech novels, FWIW.

My Winchester 94 Trapper is named, of course, Vera.

My Ruger Single Six is named, Big Damn Pistol.

And my knife is named, Middle Sized Knife.

I think Jayne would approve of the latter two as well, they seemed like Jayne type monikers for hardware.

Yeah they're Firefly-ish weapons, but hey, I AM a cowboy.

Pain is scary...

Thanks, they're fun to do, too. Use 'em however you like; I surely don't mind. Better yet, try your hand at making some up. Here's my method:

You've got to have some predictions about how something in the show was gonna turn out, right? Well, take a prediction, then pretend that you and one of the characters are having a casual conversation about how that aspect worked itself out over the course of the show. Of course, this technique does require you to have something of a split personality, or the ability to carry on both sides of a conversation in your head ("Mal! Jayne stole my dinosaurs!", "I think we should call it your... p-place where folks get buried!", "God, you guys are driving me nuts!"), or an 'invisible playmate' to do the other character's lines.
(Hey, it's okay, I just have "a rich internal landscape" like Wash's; I don't have to take medications or nuthin')

Then just take a suitably vague but portentious snippet of that imaginary conversation -- something subtly witty in the manner of Firefly's dialogue style -- et voila! You've got a 'future quote'. Just remember: Kaylee's sunny, Jayne's gruff but (I think) secretly softhearted (loves his Mama), Simon's socially inept, etc. Check your quote by imagining the actor saying the line, in character, and you shouldn't go far wrong.

Check out the BlueSunroom for a pic of our new kittens Isis and Lassiter. Also, we recently got a half-grown goat who had never had a name before, so I named her Jayne Doe. ("doe" is the word for a female goat, btw) I should have named the baby goats after Firefly things, but I already had a theme picked out, so the three little doelings are named Curare, Strychnine, and Cyanide.

I'll have to give that some thought, but yours are so good I doubt I could top them.

Actually, the writing form I'm experiment with right now is the Mini-saga, which is a short story of exactly 50 words with a title of no more than 15. It's harder than it sounds, but I've got a sort of Simon/River-ish one that I'm ALMOST happy with (but not quite).

As for hearing non-existant people talking in your head, I've been doin' that for years. They tend to turn up and want to chat at the least convenient times, like the middle of a mid-term, while I'm on the phone with my grandmother, etc.

Yeah, like I said, Herbert was just one example. I've seen several authors use a technique similar to the one I use for the Firefly 'future quotes'. Herbert uses several different versions of 'future quotes' from various character diaries, the galactic encyclopedia, Bene Gesserit manuals, etc.

And I've seen several other really good authors use it to good effect too. I personally prefer good old-fashioned 'foreshadowing' within the prose to give subtle hints; but, it's very hard to do that effectively without spoiling the surprise for the reader. Think about M. Night Shyamalan's The Sixth Sense: Tons of foreshadowing, so when he hits you with the movie's conclusion, it comes like an electrical shock. But that's veeerrry hard to pull off; even the producers of the show were certain they'd given too many hints, and that the audience would catch on. For examples of very capable use of foreshadowing, that nevertheless just misses being excellent try Nicole Kidman in The Others (I detected the gimmick about 30 minutes into the flick), or John Cusack in Identity (about an hour in, I had the whole double-twist thing figured out). Still good movies; but also good examples of how difficult it is to disguise your dramatic punches.

BTW: Dude. Me and the guys used to watch the Robotech 'cartoons' (never heard the term 'anime' back then) in hotel rooms all over the Southwest back in the early 80's. I never knew there were novels. What, like graphic novels?

Nope, actual, honest-to-goodness text novels.

Apparently, they were intended as adaptations of the series (of course, as most adaptations go, they read more like an expanded director's cut with all deleted scenes).

Since the Robotech animé was stitched together from three entirely different series (Macross, Southern Cross, and Genesis Climber Mospeada, plus (IIRC) Macross Plus as Robotech: Sentinels), the novels stand up a lot better than the series.

There're even a few "extra" stories that bridge the gaps, like the Zentraedi Rebellion between "Macross" and "Southern Cross."

Oh, and pig difference; the novel timeline actually has a finale (End of the Circle, when the Sentinels return to Earth in time to repopulate after the Invid withdrawal removes all the protoculture/Flower of Life).

Unfortunately, Andromeda got to my two older cats before Firefly did, (I named my adorable sibling tabby's Harper and Trance...)

However, I've also lately adopted a little black kitten who I named Inara, 'cause she's kinda graceful and dainty and sofisticated, (I think she has Siamese blood), like Inara.
