I was just watching the dvd and began to wonder what goram actually means? they seem to say it a lot and I just wanted to know if it was chinese or just a made up word.

America loves a winner!

I believe it's a made up word, to substitute for god damn. I've started using my own self, when the appropriate time for such colorful talk arrives.

" They don't like it when you shoot at 'em. I worked that out myself. "

Glad to know I'm not the only one saying that in the "real world"! It's just so gorram useful.

I use it all the time too, that and shiny.

Plus some colorful Chinese in situations where saying the exact same thing in English or Spanish may raise some eyebrows. Well it does anyhow but they don't know what I'm saying so it's socially acceptable.

Pain is scary...

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I also think it is a substitution for goddamn, but rather than just being a made up word, I think it may have come about because of the way Orientals might have had trouble pronouncing goddamn, so it became a popular pronunciation among other people as well.

Doesn't stop me none. Although I'm from one of those fringe areas where I can pull off Yankee too if I really have to, now wanting to...not so much.

There was another thread on this topic--sorry, I am really pressed for time or I would find it. Someone claimed on that thread that gorram is a pronuciation of goddamn used in parts of Northern England.

Good point, but that's part of the charm of the English language. As someone way smarter than me said (going from memory here so may be a bit off on the quote):

"English doesn't just borrow from other languages, it finds them in a dark alley, kicks the crap out of them and rummages through their pockets for loose verbs."

So of course the future Anglos will have to murderize the Mandarin pronounciation, just the way we are.
