I think that all of the actors on Firefly are very talented, and some of them get to show the skills of their craft more than others. I personally think that the three hardest characters to convey would definately have to be:

River, Simon and Mal (in that order? i'm not sure)

River's part is hard for many obvious reason's. She has to play the "crazy" one without being over the top, or fake. She has to make sense and not make sense at the exact same time. And i've seen very few people who could dance as gracefully as she did in Safe wearing big-ass combat Boots!

Mal's part is also hard for many obvious reason's. His character is a hollowed out and "mean ole' man" (Mal's words, not mine, definately not mine!) Who switches back and forth from a thoughtful and kind of poetical speaker to a no-nonsense brilliant gunfighter.

Simon's character however just leaves me in awe. He has so many different switches, from the snooty and curious doctor in the beginning, to the loving brother, to the man completely baffled by women, to the man who lets people walk all over him and then to a pretty good fist fighter.

I am just flabbergasted by the brilliance and talent of these wonderful actors. So now i think i shall get to the point of this post...

What three characters abourd Serenity do you think it would be the most difficult to play?

Very good points.

I'm constantly amazed by the acting on this show. Nathan Fillion can convey more with one look than most actors can with a 10 minute monologue, cue cards and a billboard.

As for the three hardest roles to play, I'm gonna cop out and agree with yours.

Although I think all of the parts would be hard to play, there's so much subtext to the characters that it has to be perfect to be believable and after seeing it all, I'm definately a believer.

I gotta say, it is hard to argue with your choices there...

I do think that Kaylee is also a tough role to play, so hard to be that darn chipper all the time and not be annoying, but Jewell pull's it off beautifully.

Nine excellent actors, no doubt.
But the one who shines for me is Summer Glau.
She has the toughest role, and plays it to perfection!

CYBERSNARK

I think Jayne's gotta be a tough role to play (and, for that matter, to write). There's a tendency to play the "big dumb guy" as being kinda slow. Jayne's not; he's as quick and witty (in his way) as Mal or even Wash, he's just coming from a different direction.

AB manages to convey that there is stuff going on inside Jayne's skull, yet still make him look like he's not entirely at ease with the process. At times, you can almost hear gears grinding.

I'm w/cybersnark!
not to take anything away from any of the other actors,
they are all brilliant,
but Adam Baldwin's performance is incredible!
to play comedy AND intimidation in the same scene,
heck, in the same sentence! Is amazing!
He has shaded his character perfectly so that even when you are appalled at what he says, you have to admire his conviction that he is in the right.
I admire his work so much, so funny...so brilliant!

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

You know I am impressed every time I watch an episode of Firefly that I just sit riveted to my television if I am alone, or keep pausing the DVD if I have a friend over to point out things.

This cast is so talented, and the chemisty they have on screen is incredible. The direction is excellent, and the writing is fantastic. All of these elements combined makes for the best sci fi show I have ever seen.

The cast member that impresses me the most is Summer Glau. The way she goes from one range of emotion to another seamlessly, the way she protrays River, it is just amazing. All of my converts are very impressed w/ her talent and could not imagine anyone else playing the part.

ZOID

Browncoat1:

I'll go you one better: I can't imagine any of the characters being portrayed by other actors. I can't even imagine Rebecca Gayheart, originally cast as Inara, doing the job Morena Baccarin did.

One of the things I liked best was that -- with the exception of AB and RG -- the actors were relative unknowns. I didn't come in with preconceived notions about the characters based on the actors' previous work. Then again, I was never a "Buffy" or "Angel" kinda guy, either...

Respectfully,

zoid

Yes, i know that Wash was in 28 days, but i'm wondering...what does that have to do with this thread?

I'm not trying to be snarky, i just seriously want to know.

KINGOFTHEMUDDERS

Nathan Fillion had to hit the most and widest variety of notes that I have ever seen on television and he did it in such a fantabulous way that he convinced me he is the greatest actor of our generation... which is the boldest statement, but given his performance, I can't see anyone better.

However, Summer Glau's work was MINDBLOWING. Where everything she did seemed to have been thought over and had to be precise. Every look was properly orchestrated and coordinated and worked. Her reaction to Books hair is one of the best reactions where she goes through several emotions in a second. I don't think I've seen that much quality acting from so little time.

Oh man. Tough choice to narrow down-- as others have said, everyone was just so damn good. I will say, though, that I think Jayne is a particularly difficult character, largely because he's very easy to play very one-level. The last scene in Ariel between Jayne and Mal blew me away because it was so multi-layered-- I think that was one of AB's best moments.

Well, if you ever need a kick in the imagination, or just find yourself taking the acting for granted, hit the language button and watch an episode or two with the Spanish or French dubbed over. It's... interesting, in the Chinese sense of the word.

Now that you mention it Zoid, I can't imagine anyone in the parts of any of our beloved crew. There can be no one anywhere that can bring the magic to Firefly that this cast does on screen. I can't wait to see how great they are on the big screen.
