TALVIN

Logged in today to see that a little political discussion has popped up here on the board.

This ain't it.

With all due respect to the political beliefs of my fellow Browncoats (and mine are pretty firmly held, which is why I am keeping mum on them here), I would ask that this thread NOT be used to endorse, debate, or discuss a particular candidate.

I DO wish to use it to point something out, though:

We're Browncoats.

We take as our mythic ideal a people that are willing to fight for Freedom, Independence, Human Worth and Dignity. Like the Browncoats, we probably have a lot of different ideas about what, *exactly*, those words mean and how they should be applied--but we agree that they matter.

So I am asking that, if you are an American, or if you are a citizen of a nation that likewise allows you to have a voice in the ongoing process of *being* a nation...

Put those ideals into action.

Say proudly, "I am a Browncoat!"

"AND I VOTE!"

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

BRAVO!!!

I could not have said so better myself Talvin. I have held to one belief for most of my adult life: "Never discuss politics or religion." There is no faster way to lose friends or cause animosity than to get involved in a debate on politics, religion, or the policies of either.

I for one keep my own counsel on such things, and like to think of myself as open minded and informed, but I will not touch that particular thread for anything.

I agree w/ your statement that we are all Browncoats, and whether we agree on all matters or not, the underlying principles of freedom and human rights are something we should all strive to uphold.

I am a Browncoat, and I vote.

Debate is a fine thing, yet it can quickly get muddied by personal feelings about cherished notions. It is difficult to learn how to talk about things like poilitics or religion or whatever and to be able to separate the emotional apsects from the facts ot opinions. Too bad, too. I love a good arguement. There are other places for those kinds of discussions though.

I am a Browncoat and I vote.

Debate is a great thing but you can't allow your personal feelings get in the way or get hurt just because someone has an opposite viewpoint.

Amen Brother!

I'm guilty of contributing to some of the debate here (sorry!) so please allow me to add my voice to the Browncoats that say:

I'M A BROWNCOAT AND I VOTE GORRAMIT!

Now, how's about we get on with this increasingly eerie-ass day

Sorry - just occurred to me,

So we've got TWO missions now:

Convert our friends into Browncoats AND
be sure they vote.

Sounds like a plan to me.

Absolutely- Not everyone is ever going to agree on anything, but you have no right to criticize the process if you arent going to participate in the process- To me, if you dont take a stand, you shouldnt get a say- Dont vote? Dont complain when things suck-

I'm a Browncoat, and I vote!

I'm a Browncoat and I vote.

Well, this coming election I'm going back and forth with regards to voting for the reason stated below. Since an election is expected to be called in the next couple of months I have a little while to make up my mind. I'll probably end up voting and base my decision on only one or two issues as the political landscape is becoming more extreme in parts and more like in others (at least in Canada).

It's true that they can't say "I didn't vote for this! etc" because they didn't vote at all. But, they can complain if they did do something.

Some people will not vote as a form of protest. So, there not voting and criticism becomes there form of participation.

NOTE: I'm using criticism here as constructive criticism. If people just complain and don't offer a possible solution then I agree with you.

Hey Talvin,

How about some bumperstickers?

"If you're not part of the Browncoat solution, you must be part of the Alliance problem!"

"PROUD TO BE A VOTING BROWNCOAT!"

"Vote with the 'coats"

or other such ones...

I'm not a browncoat, but I also vote.

I'm a big fan of the show, but wouldn't call myself a browncoat 'cos I'm a pacifist, which I realize isn't popular here — according to fff poster HERO, pacifists should all be tortured and killed.

In the recent provincial elections here in South Africa, I voted for the party who supports most of the issues I do; and spoilt my national ballot by writing "None of the above" on it because my party couldn't afford the registration cost to take part nationally.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi:
I am prepared to die[ for a cause], but there is[ none] for which I am prepared to kill.
Violence breeds violence... Pure goals can never justify impure or violent action... They say means are, after all, means. I would say means are, after all, everything. As the means, so the end.

Well, I don't share that view. It's a bit - well - crazy, dontcha' think? And I don't think being a browncoat means you're a war-leanin' revolutionary. I think it means you like Firefly. So in my view of the world - vote on, fellow-browncoat IamJacksUsername!

The browncoats in the show are people who decided to declare war in order to be free, and I understand that position. I decided not to use "browncoat" to personally describe myself, I'll stay with Firefly fan.

I turned 18 in October but there hasn't been an election in the UK since. So I'm a browncoat and I would vote if someone would hurry up and have an election.

I voted in our student elections. Does that count?

Roll on June and the local elections!

Sigma-

My point was not about people who dont vote as a form of protest, I was in a hurry so maybe my post wasnt clear (and reading it I can see that it was not- lol) - Let me explain-

Where I work, for the Teamsters, we just had our local shop's steward elections- For those of you who dont know much about unions, the steward is basically the employees' go-to-guy in settling differences between the company and the worker (overly simplified, but that's basically it)- Now, this particular election was incredibly close (decided by 2 votes, closest one I ever saw, and I've been a union man since I was 15)- There were several people who didnt show up, because they "had other stuff to do" (like, laundry, in one case- stuff not important enough to miss a vote for), or "they didnt think it was going to be that close"- Now, those same people turned around and cried and whined when the people they liked and would support them didnt get elected, then they crabbed about what their new representatives did- These are the same people who never showed up to nominate anyone either, then became angry when people who thought like them werent nominated- My response? Drink a big cup of STFU (Shut the up, for those not in the know) - You didnt want to be part of the process, you dont get a say- Same with our votes for gov't; we are lucky to get 40% to turn out, but everyone wants to bitch when their leader sucks- You showed up? You can bitch-

Now, Sigma, I can see protesting by saying, 'you all arent worth my vote, I'm not voting'- But this is the important part - They'd better have worked towards another alternative first- There was no one to represent them? Bullshit- There are third party candidates, watchdog groups, PAC's, etc. etc.- Plenty of things to do to change the process if you dont like it- It's the beauty of Democracy- But to claim you are not voting in protest, and to have done none of these things? Just like before, drink a big cup of STFU-

In election offseasons, I'm a member of Truemajority.org, Greenpeace, and on the mailing list of several watchdog groups, many of them labor-related- I'm part of the process, I vote, so I get a say- Not part of the process? No bitchy-bitchy

So I say this- Those on this site under 18? Find how you can help the people you support in other ways besides voting (like campaign work)- Those over 18, just show up at the polls or work to change the system- If so, you are a true Browncoat-

You can be a browncoat and be a pacifist.
You can fight the alliance and be a pacifist.

What about all the smugglers and theives who must have gotten supplies and stuff to the browncoats? How about the factory workers who might have downed tools and walked out of Alliance plants? What about the sympathisers who smuggle information and supplies, who take in the wounded and help Alliance captives to escape? They are all Browncoats! The great thing about the Firefly universe is that with such a big war, you can imagine all sorts of people helping and hindering in different ways. Just because you're a pacifist, doesn't mean you can't fight for what you think is right - it just means that you can't hurt for what you think is right. You're a browncoat! And a fighter!

(Contrary to popular belief, the A-Team were pacifists, after the horrors in 'nam they elected to solve their missions without shedding blood with their guns - by scaring their enemy with near misses into submission. They were socially concious mercenaries. An obvious lie.)

Yes everybody! Vote! And don't forget you can always tick 'none of the above' if you don't agree with either party.

Personally I talk politics and religion all the time with my friends, family and co-workers. Never had any problem or any fall outs of it, though we come from different angles politically. Any other Brits happy with talking politics with friends and the like? Is it just America generally that feels uncomfortable, or other nations? Any ideas?

By the way. I don't know how many posts I've done now. Over a dozen I think. But I just want you all to know that I adore it here.

Oh, and I don't believe I could ever kill someone.

Well, maybe I'm a little fuzzy on knee-capping.

And I have always wanted to tear apart 'comedian' Jim Davidson (Brits will know him, if Americans knew, they'd despise him), but that's a perfectly human reaction. Look out for an eventual 'I Hate Jim Davidson' thread.

Anyway, back to your regular broadcasting. I love you all.

Actually, I can honestly say that no-one is along my political lines. There are 2 parties that have some ideals along the line of some issues that I hold dear, but, they also have ideals that I despise. That's why I said that I would have to vote based on only one or two issues. Of course that all depends on...

And I did state that someone would have to do something to be able to complain. If not then I agree that they should drink that cup.

I'm Canadian and I talk politics and religion with my friends and family. Rarely things get heated. If they do it isn't a big deal. We just talk about something else for a bit and then back to politics and/or religion. No harm, no foul. No friendships/relationships have ever been hurt because of it.

Hey, I know I'd support a Pope who could shoot my kneecap out.

I vote too, even though I usually find myself in the "lesser of two evils" camp. Pity the First isn't fielding a candidate since Caleb got sliced up. If nothing else, it'd make things interesting.
