Anyone know what he's up to?

On IMDB they have 'Goners' listed as announced, but that has been for quite a while now and seemingly little development has occured.

Since then Drew Goddard (his co-writer on Goners) has worked as writer/exec-producer on Lost and written Cloverfield.

Tim Minear by contrast seems to have kept his schedule busy since Firefly, saddly most tend to be cancelled but still, he is keeping his hand in.

I wonder if he's decided to be less involved in the industry.

Comics, mostly.

Aside from Buffy Season 8 (with Dark Horse comics) Joss has also landed several contracts with Marvel. He's just finishing up a several year run with Marvel's Astonishing X-Men, and will also complete a six issue run of Marvel's Runaways too.

Yep, he is back to work.

While I'm as excited for DOLLHOUSE as much as the next person, I still hope that he could create some more movies, and that they'd be blockbusters. I know he's a TV person at heart and has expanded the boundaries of what a TV show can do, but there's still nothing that beats seeing your name projected onto a huge screen. Plus, GONERS and CABIN IN THE WOODS sound like stuff I'd like to see.

Also, it would be similar to what Judd Apatow has gotten in the last few years. Going from creating cult tv shows that have rabidly loyal fanbases but has a reputation of being a money loser to creating comic blockbusters that are actually good and becoming a true power player in the industry. So it would be so sweet to see Joss go from cult TV auteur to Hollywood heavyweight.

Yes it would indeed. Although I must say I was somewhat relieved that Wonderwoman never came to be. I think with film work, directors have to choose very carefully what projects they do, or they will be labelled quickly as a genre director.

If Joss were to springboard from TV to Cinema employing such similar motifs, it could have restricted him as a director. So in a way I'm glad for a delay but it is nice to know he is on his way back.

Well, I think Whedon has already established and labelled himself as a genre person. I don't think he'll ever do like a series or a movie where it's just normal people living normal lives. I think he'd have a seizure if he didn't write anything that didn't have an ass kicking teenage girl in the mix. The closest thing he's done similar to that are the two episodes of THE OFFICE he's directed and the work he did on ROSEANNE and other sitcoms before creating his own stuff.

I like to think that in some parallel universe, him and J.J. Abrams have switched places. That Abrams is the cult tv guy that's constantly getting screwed by the studios while Whedon pretty much has the keys to the kingdom (or at least Paramount) thrown at him with permission to go crazy.
