Hey All

Came across this story over at Darkhorizons about Universal's post-strike business plan, and it got me wondering if maybe due to this business plan, that SERENITY II might happen out of pure luck.

Here's the article itself.

A recent Variety feature covering the future of Universal Pictures in the post-strike environment has dropped in three small but important facts worth noting.

Whereas most other studios are cutting back their content, U is doing the opposite and aims to deliver more big tentpole movies and franchises to local cinemas - an increase from around 15 to about 19 or so films per year and that's not including its Focus and Rogue speciality labels.

One of those new films will be the return of a character that many thought was done - Jason Bourne. The article says that despite both Director Paul Greengrass and actor Matt Damon's stating reluctance to doing a fourth "Bourne" last year, the pair have nevertheless been signed on (it would seem recently) for another one.

Another important note is that the studio is in talks with director Guillermo Del Toro to essentially get him back in the fold. The studio not only picked up the "Hellboy" sequel, but they bought the rights to his dream project, H.P. Lovecraft's' "At the Mountains of Madness" in the hopes of getting it made. When word came down that he was tied to New Line's two "Hobbit" films, the studio began to panic.

There's also confirmation that "Bruno", Sacha Baron Cohen's follow-up to the wildly successful "Borat" movie, will hit cinemas later this year. The upcoming third "Mummy" movie costs a quite expensive $175 million, a settlement with Brad Pitt over the "State of Play" debacle could actually see Pitt starring in a U film in the near future, and the studio is keenly pursuing a deal with DreamWorks once its pact with Paramount expires.

So even though from the article they're more interested in Bourne, Del Toro and Baron Cohen, just the whole "more tentpole films and franchises" might be a hint in that there could possibly be a sequel to our BDM.

Sometimes, if you pray hard enough, miracles happen.

::dog runs in and drops the Cans for Serenity II and III, but a homeless guy steals them because we didn't give him a quarter when we walked out of Dunks::

Damn. That stuff never works.

Here's to hoping though. And holding the line

The part I like the most is the phrase
" and franchises ". If 'Cowboys and Aliens' does well , 'Versal may begin to wonder , " Hey , what else in the genre could we exploit ? "

There's practically nothing else that Hollywood likes more than a 'franchise'...And , a second Serenity feature would go a long way toward establishing 'our crew' as a viable franchise .

We should probably also hope that Trek XI does well , as a further incentive...

One can't help but think that $ 35 million of that 'Mummy' budget could have been better invested in 'Serenity 2'.

Sure hope that Joss will get a script ready in his 'spare time' , just in case...

Well I too must voice my agreement that this all sounds promising and that I hope a sequel comes to fruition.

Betraying my ignorance, (which I'm good at mind you) what is "cowboys"?

Aliens I recognize of course, but Cowboys not so much.

A potential sequel is good, but I'm more caught up in the idea of GUILLERMO DEL TORO DOING H.P. LOVECRAFT!!!!!!!

I know. That's one of those things you just can't believe hasn't happened already.
