Folks, I just got into SGA in a big way, and I'm here to tell ya it has great characters and cool plots and ships and fights and such- and a way shiny sense of humour. It's no Firefly, but it is a really excellent gorram show.
It helps some with my FF/Serenity withdrawal, and I totally recommend it to all Browncoats here.

Comments? Reviews? Slams?

What happened? He see your face?

IMO, By a whole lot..... If measured in distance, a star gate could not bridge the gap between Firefly and SG-A. (which I am assuming is like, very far)

I usually watch the Stargate shows (SG-1 and Atl) when convenient. I WOULD schedule watching Firefly much like I do Heroes now. …and then re-watch it on DVR. Not the case for SG-A.

Having said that, I do enjoy the show. I like it for the creative, scientific possibilities. Character development is prevalent, but lacks in the “Jossified” department. I do think each character is well defined and fills common roles regardless of genre. The jokes are sometimes good but rarely have me LOL. Integration with characters from SG-1 was neat. …and, of course, now there is Jewel!!!

The FX is well designed and I do like the color scheme, the sleekness of the ships, and the architecture of the city itself.

The diff. ways they fill the scenario below is endless.

Mckay: *Babble Babble* scientific jargon, *chatter chatter* (abrupt interruption or epiphany)
Sheppard: Ok, Calm down, we’ll get through this.
Tayla: We must seek the ways of enlightenment, brethren.
Ronon: *Grunt* *Kicks Butt* *Grunt*
Dr. Weir: Are you sure there isn’t a diplomatic solution?

Etc., etc., etc.

All in all I recommend it. But I don’t think about it much when not watching. It most defintely fills a void like you mentioned CisA.

I admit to detecting a certain...formula...to it.

Heroes is hands down my favourite show currently being produced, but it just don't gimme that 'space-y' feel...
Plus: Sheppard & McKay always crack me up.

I love Stargate Atlantis. You're right, it's not as good as Firefly, but it's right up there with it, if you ask me. I must agree that the characters can be a bit predictable, but I can deal with that.

The conversation from last week was great, when Teyla was talking about buying gifts as being a sign of respect. Ronan said to McKay, "Oh, maybe I should get you something."
"Really?" McKay asked.
"No."

"We may experience some slight turbulence, and then... explode."

As soon as I saw the thread title I knew this was you posting. You really got the bug my friend.

CIA, you know my views from the other thread we have going, but for those that don't venture into the Other SciFi Series section, here's my take.

I am in full agreement with CIA that this is an excellent show. Everything about it fits right and I consider it a far better show than SG1.
The humour is spot on, the characters are great and fit well as a team or 'extended family' as it was said once. Rodney Mackay is just perfect and brilliantly played by David Hewlett, especially when he gets upstaged.

There are also lots of lesser details and plot points that get carried along with the show. One of my faves is that the characters have country flag badges on their uniforms. Rodney is Canadian, Carson is Scottish etc. They don't just let them be from a generic type background. I thought this was a nice touch that I hadn't seen before.

No, it isn't Firefly quality and I don't think this or perhaps anything else ever will be. FF was and will always be something special that transcends other TV shows. The only way I can see it being beat is if Joss does something that is better. Like a second season, or maybe a third.

But it is some of the best scifi out there and I would recommend it even if you didn't like SG1.
The humour alone would be enough for me, but there is so much more to this show.

I'll chime in on the opposite side.

I watched it for a while, but some of SG:A is just cringeworthy.

The concept is cool. The ships are cool. The enemies are cool. The writing is not.

They tried to differentiate themselves from SG:1 by looking mroe relaxed, but well... the following seen comes to mind:

/Start episode
(I think it is) Shepherd, Tayla, Ronn enter the gateroom.
Shepherd (to Dr Weir, already there): Team xwhatever that you sent is is late in communicating by x amount of time. We are going to check it out.
Dr Weir: ok.

/cringes

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I never got into SG1, watching it very sporadically over the years, but did watch the final season when Morena was on. Started watching SGA when it was first spun-off, but didn't like it any more than the original. I am watching it this year since Jewel is on it, but sometimes it is a chore. Way too much technobabble, as bad as some of the Treks got to be. The storylines are too formulaic and repetitive.

And thus nbz unknowingly sparked an SF Jihad...
The days ahead would be filled with wormhole vortexes and lightning, and no amount of praying or squeals for forgiveness would save nbz, the carbon unit's soul ever lost to the dimension where Manimal & the last season of Sliders play end-to-end with not even a commercial to break it up. We will weep for nbz, as poor taste is no one's fault- though the Gods themselves give no SGA hater quarter....

The characters, Ec, the CHARACTERS!!!
I'm almost halfway through the third season, and I gotta say they've surprised me on more than one occasion with their attention to character! Sure, many if not most episodes follow a certain 'formula', but this series blows Voyager out of the water with it's creativity given the short leash on the whole Gate-necessary plot device.
And I liked Voyager.
The funny is also what cemented this as my fourth favourite show of all time!!!(behind FF, Dark Angel and Buffy)
I feel that you maybe didn't give it a fair chance due to prior dislike of SG-1....?

Is that bloke from 'X-files' in this? Mitch Pileggi?

Never seen this. Couldn't watch SG1. Ever. I really loved that movie, what they were trying to do with the idea. And then they Trekked it. And ballsed it up horribly.

Sometimes a film should just be Left Alone. And not...merchandised. That way lies Ewoks.

Yeah, Mitch Pileggi has an occasional recurring role as a Colonel Caldwell. He's one of the other non-main cast members it's nice to see pop up every so often.

Another blasphemer! Time to call in the Spanish Inquisition (nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition) and break out the fluffy cushions.
