I can't find any kind of information about the jump/hyper/sub/what-ever -engines that the ships in Firefly universe use.

Truth be told, I haven't seen a single ship jump/warp. And it bothers me. The only time I see something resembling a jump it is in the intro, where the Serenity's buttocks point straight at the the camera and the unruly piece of junk farts straight at your face. Have the writers taken the dastardly way of David Brin with half a dozen hyperspace-levels, jumppoint travel and a thirdspace engine of extreme denial? Did they decide to leave the question unanswered to allow more space for future scripts? Or were they just plain careless? Any kind of information concerning intersystem travel in Firefly will be appreciated.

Sorry, Joss is not a really a 'techie' type of guy. The science is usually left off in the basckground in the things Joss creates. It is there, but it 'just works' ... unless a story needa a description of the tech to work.

There alot of theoris that bounce around here.
Single solar system with hundereds of planets (This, I do not support)
Partial Galaxy
Full Galaxy

There have been a few threads debating this ver concept. Heh, they are probably in the Archive here.

Well, in "The Message," Wash specifies a distance/time figure as "at full burn," so whatever FTL they use involves different levels (unlike, frex, Star Wars hyperdrive, which is one-speed all the time).

Ships also appear to interact in realspace, so no trans-dimensional stuff. Ergo, it's not the Babylon 5 flavour of hyperspace (cherry? ) either.

On that note: the 'Firefly' effect seems to be a vastly different mode of propulsion.

First off Serenity has the pivot and swing arm jet like 'burners' situated on extenders port and starboard. These seem to be the near orbit and planet fall engines.

I think we have see the 'puffs' from OMS {Orbital Manuvering System}, but I don't remember what episode. But one must assume they exist.

Now - the main engine seems to be referred to in coupla' ways. The engine, gravity drive and drive. {if so ... why dinna they float about in "OoG"?}

Gravity drive ... meebe that means the Firefly class can 'surf' the 'gravity waves' that connect any large spatial object with another. Riding the outer rim of the gravity well, so to speak. And the Firefly effect 'boosts' the ship over the lip of the well to speed at huge velocities from one gravity point to another.

Sigh, I dunno, just throwing ideas out into the Black...

First I would like to welcome you to this side of the 'verse since you are new.

Second, to answer your question, nobody knows...yet. Hell, I don't even think Joss himself really knows yet.

Maybe, he'll answer that question someday or maybe he will have a good time at it by watching us debate about it on this board forever.

Personally I support the Galaxy theory as well as I believe that there is no faster than light engine (at least no on Serenity) in the Firefly 'verse. It would be like Joss to go against conventional wisdom and not include faster than light engines in the Firefly 'verse.

Oh, and play Cantr II at www.cantr.net.
