GENERAL DISCUSSIONS

It's been 6 years since Firefly, the show seems dated and other series are better now...

NOT!!

Although Stargate Atlantis & Heroes have caught my fancy, I fear no other show ever will ever grab me like this one did.

...well...

No, I don't think even Dollhouse will...

Damn you Joss!!!

That's fightin' talk for a subject - but luckily it was just a clever ruse to get people to reply .

Only found FF at Xmas this year (I know, where have I been?!) but I think it will take a lot to persuade me to switch to another show. I must admit to having misgivings about Dollhouse too....but Joss has not produced a crap show yet so I have high hopes.

I've just started watching the 'new' Battlestars (again, I realise that I am somewhat behind!) and I'm really enjoying them, it has great action, the story is very good and the dialogue is better than most (though not up to Joss' standard, obviously!).

Although they are very different shows I think FF is the superior show. That's why we're all here, after all!

Clever...

As to the person who's getting into BSG; it's good until last season.

It kind of bites, but they've got a recap which ain't so bad.

Huge spoiler here, but a good recap.

-----------------------------------------------------------
There's a widow in sleepy Chester
Who weeps for her only son;
There's a grave on the Pabeng River,
A grave that the Burmans shun;
And there's Subadar Prag Tewarri
Who tells how the work was done.

Obviously you haven't seen much of the third season of BSG. Total shark jumper. I was so pumped after the season opener then every week after that I was let down like a ton of bricks through flimsy plywood floors of approval.

I'm with everyone else. I was fixing to use my most vulgar and offensive words and smilies. Then I saw who posted it and that it was a joke... you're meanisall.

Stargate Atlantis is good, so was Journeyman after it got over it's somewhat slow, disappointing first couple episodes. Chuck is really good and T:TSCC is ok but not really my favorite new show. There is a new Stargate series coming soon and another new series called Warehouse 13 which has Jane Espensen on the writing staff.. I think she was involved in creating the series too. I need to read about it again, it's been awhile. There's Eureka too... but like you said none of those shows have what Firefly had. It might have been it's tragic demise but that doesn't explain the oldest, most diehard fans. You guys and gals fell in love with it at the beginning.

I've given up hope on ever finding a series I love as much as Firefly. It's like that first great love of you life that you lost. You'll find love again but it'll never be as sweet. You just have to remember and learn to appreciate what ya got.

Jewel(Kaylee) is on Stargate Atlantis, she's a regular as of the upcoming season 5(Just recurring in 4). Adam(Jayne) is a regular on the NBC comedy/spy drama Chuck. Alan(Wash) has a legal drama coming out next fall... look it up I can't remember the name. Summer(River) is the new terminator on T:TSCC(Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles). Nathan(Mal) is on Desperate Housewives but for how long is anyones guess. He also has a number a good movies, Waitress(Out on DVD) White Noise 2(Out on DVD) and Slither... (Also out on DVD). Morena(Inara) is the baddie in the recently released Stargate: SG1 DVD movie The Ark of Truth.

Our Big Damn Heroes are still out there. Firefly boosted a few great actors into full-blown stars. It left it's mark on the world and it won't go away. It'll grow and grow since we only know how to love this show and spread the word any way we can.

I'm sorry for being so sappy but in writing this I started feeling more and more sentimental and realized just as I was typing it that I'll never love a show as much as I do Firefly.

P.S. I may never love a woman as much either... I just realized this too and it disturbs me a bit.

Anyhoo, I've only just got through the 1st season of BSG so no sharks in view yet ( no spoilers, plz, already started season 2!). I said it wasn't as good as FF which will always be fresh-looking and never in danger from Jaws because it lived fast and died young. Or something.

Ha Ha funny much...I was sooo going to reply to this with an acute level of anger and defensiveness...lucky I read the rest of your comment. There are other great Tv shows ( eg."Life on Mars")...but not of the same ilk. I fear nothing will ever match the impact of Firefly. I think it has to do with a lot of variables: great stories, brilliant casting, endearing and realistically flawed characters, amazing musical accompaniament, the obviously gargantuan amount of love poured into it by everyone involved...how many other shows have all of that?

The only shows I have liked since FF are BSG, Stargate Atlantis and Avatar: The Last Airbender..

Human civilization is divided into four nations, the Water Tribes, the Earth Kingdom, the Air Nomads, and the Fire Nation. Within each nation, an order of men and women called "Benders" have the ability to manipulate their native element. These Bending arts combine a certain style of martial arts and elemental mysticism. The Bending types are Waterbending, Earthbending, Firebending, and Airbending.

In each generation, one person is capable of Bending all four elements; this is the Avatar.

Avatar: The Last Airbender debuted on TV on February 21, 2005. The show is also available on DVD or for download at the iTunes Store. There are over 50 episodes so far….

Well I was half right.

"Oh that's gotta be one of Succotash's chainyank threads - this I gotta see"

Since FF went off the air, ain't been nothin worth a watch, others may offer different opinion, but what Firefly had, ain't nothin else got it, not even close - and that includes the movie.

I realize that is a minority opinion, and yeah I saw the movie and bought the DVD to support the IDEA and concept... but having glanced over the comics and the travesty they make of some stuff, they can keep em, I won't pay a penny.

I mean, seriously, after blowing up that whole recurring villan trope by kickin Crow through the engine, and then jumping right to it ?
(being vague to avoid spoilers)

Why not just slap some guns and shields on Serenity while they're at it, since all of what made FF quality stuff seems to get dumped as excess baggage every time it's put in another format... Gee look, sound in space, how about that, right ?

Please, NO books, not if it means jettisoning more of what made FF what it was, instead of another Star Drek clone.

I'd rather have no more FF then have it demeaned so - but I am indeed open to more stories in the 'verse with different actors, just NOT a slow evolution into yet-another-space-series clone by dumping the very stuff that MADE it so special.

Network Exec -"No this family crap has gotta go, more conflict, make someone pregnant, kill one of em off for the season end cliffhanger, and then make it just a dream so we can roll their contract over!"

You know, I would rather take FF out back and shoot it then have it suffer that fate.

Got to agree w/ you Chris.

I liked SG1, but it's gone now. Stargate Atlantis is good (and it has Jewel now!), but this season has been a bit formulatic. Heroes is great, but we are facing a long hiatus due to the writer's strike. Even though I dig Heroes it just doesn't grab me like Firefly.

The only show that has even come close is Jericho, and honestly I would give up Jericho for good for just one new one hour episode of Firefly.

Guess Joss has ruined me for all other sci fi.

Damn you Joss!

I certainly gave Lost a fair chance - EC, but I have to agree with Strangebird here. I guess the series lost me when it took that long hiatus and then came back without really resolving anything - I may have missed some of the eps simply because of frustration, but each show would always leave me unsatisfied at the end - it's not that I need everything wrapped up in an hour, but this show has dragged on so long it's kinda painful to watch - There have been some intriguing scenarios introduced, no doubt, but I'm just a little tired of being jerked around by Mr Abrams and co.

Fortunately I can now - upon closer examination of this provocatively titled thread - holster my flame-thrower and remove my dog-pilin' boots. I've been attached to a greater or lesser degree to a lot of TV shows in my time - Life...House...Boston Legal...The John Laroquette(sp?) Show (the 1st season, before they sappy-ed it down to pre-school level...and that's a blatant insult to pre-schoolers)...to name but a few. I've probably liked a few of 'em about as much as FF...hard to imagine liking any of 'em more...doesn't matter, FF (and its cast, crew, and creator) is in a class by itself. Speshul, as we used to say at The Institute. Not sure sometimes what's stronger - my affection for Firefly and its "fine bunch of ruebens", or my sense of jaded outrage that it was cancelled. Bloody Philistines (and that's a blatant insult to Philistines).

This is the part where I chime in to say that I once believed the same of Dark Angel- when it got canceled, I gave up on network TV altogether, which is why I had to discover Firefly on DVD in '05, nine months before Serenity came out.
Then I discovered Buffy.
Firefly is WHY I gave Heroes & Atlantis a look. So I have to thank Joss for opening me up to a lot of other things.
But the caterpillar of Firefly & the butterfly of Serenity at at the center of my 'Verse, and seeing as it's almost six years since the six years since the vote for Unification, I thought this might be the time to bring it up.

And since it was also brought up, Lost would be better as a mini-series- it's real dragged-out, IMO, and BSG's season 3 revealed that they indeed had no plan.

Totally disagree on both counts. Lost would be a waste of time trunucated to such a small timeframe. I'll agree the show meandered a bit at the beginning of the 3rd season - but that was due to the network mandate. Once the creative team was able to secure a final timeframe, the show has been kicking ass. Sure, you have to be patient, but I appreciate shows that demand intellegence and thought to follow them, and don't pander to the LCD.

As for BSG, I though season 3 was pretty damned good. Better than any other shows I saw last year (save perhaps Lost, and maybe if I was generous, I'd call it a tie with Heroes). A couple misfire episodes, but overall pretty solid. And just becuase they don't follow what you want or expect them to do, doesn't mean they don't have a plan.

Just rewatched a lot of episodes from early on, and a lot of that stuff is set up, subtly. Evil but not - I like moral ambiguity on villains. Human as us, but not, God.... as they've said from the start, it's all happened before, and will again.

Again, just because it's not your plan, doesn't mean it's no plan. I love where they're taking it, so far.

I quit watching after the season 3 finale. I will agree with you that it was not bad. I just finally got fed up with watching a show that seems to thrive on setting up interesting, intelligent scenarios then either leaving them hanging or answering them in unsatisfying ways. I prefer shows with a mix of thought provoking ideas and fun witty dialog. It had this to a degree, but I either found the plot too easy to figure out or so convoluted it was hopeless. I'm not saying its a bad show. Not even saying I don't like it. I've said before on another thread that I hate it but that wasn't true. I just got fed up. Someday I'll catch it in reruns or if my parents get the DVDs and I borrow them.

For now though I'm through.

Add up all my favorites... Chuck, SGA, SG1, Eureka, Pushing Daisies and sometimes Heroes... they're all good enough to sate my appetite. All together they have enough wit, intelligence and fun to keep me satisfied. They all have their low points. Chuck possibly the only one with hardly any at all. There is good TV out there. Some of it even owes it's existence, or atleast success, to Firefly and it's legions of Browncoats. Half the shows I just listed have BDH's as major cast members.

Actually, I think that is the really great thing about the show - the moral complexity and the way you're never quite sure who you should be rooting for.

Everybody is flawed - Adama and Roslyn get all dewey eyed about democracy and justice as long as democracy and justice agrees with them. Cylons are capable of love and compassion (one of them is about the most sympathetic character in the show) - but ultimately are just as screwed-up and factionalised as the humans - and the humans are capable of justifying all manner of evil.

Maybe all shows shouldn't be this way - but we need a few which make you realise that the world isn't nicely separated into good and evil.

The downsides of BSG are when they get sidetracked into Indiana Jones crap, and that time around the middle of the season when they realise that US TV seasons are just too fracking long to sustain a continuing story and have to come up with half-a-dozen episodes of padding. I've also never forgiven them for having Dee dump Billy - the show could have used one sweet, innocent un-fracked-up love story amid all the misery - or the magic cancer cure.

I'm also worried that - given the revelations at the end of S3 - there's only about 2 hours worth of story left to tell and they're either going to pad it out abysmally or hit the Plot Reset Button.

Hmmm I dunno... I think we should form a lynch mob and go after this "Chrisis 'this' Chrisis 'that character"

Reading between the lines I fear an insurrection coming on. Ok so he's redeemed himself with a bold 'NOT' in italics, sans serif.... But it's there, looming, brewing, waiting.... It all seems innocent enough, but how far away are we from a headline that reads:

"Dark Angel is a better show than Firefly!"

I tell ya he's dangerous! Influential see, he muddles people up! Confusses himself sometimes! So much so you don't know what he's capable of...

Heroes and Antlantis now.... Walker Texas Ranger tomorrow!!!!!

You wait, mark my paranoid words!

Ok.... Walker Texas Ranger shouldn't be mentioned on a Firefly fans forum ever again. Let alone in the same sentence as SGA.

TRAVELER

I have not seen a science fiction program that compares to Firefly. There are good shows out there, but not great shows.

I just alternate between my favorites I have on DVD's and wait.

For me the only recent programs I have latched on to are Medium, Chuck, and My Name is Earl.

The new Terminator TV show and Bionic Woman have not really overwhelmed me. Eli Stone looks promising. I'm watching New Amsterdam. But I get the feeling the plots are becoming a formula. Time will tell.

okay...like they told me to...count to 25...then reload.. lol...
I caught only two episodes of this show in initial airings, then the BDM..but that first episode had me hooked. No matter what (and I love Atlantis as well and some Trek) Firefly is always gonna remain my truer love. There was just so much more to care about. Even with only 14 episodes....
put it this way...I've never written Trek fic, and I'm a Trekker from waaayyyy on back.
The show lives on, for all of us!

I think that it's very telling that despite the fact that Fox did everything in it's power to sabotage Firefly, (playing the eps out of order, moving the time slot almost every week, etc.) that the show has more fans today than it did when it was on the air.

There's no doubt that the show is a winner, but had the misfortune to hit a LOSER network like FOX. The only show they've ever given a chance to work was BOnes, which is a good show, btw.

WEll, that and the gift to all star search fans "American Idull".

I hoped for a while that the show would come back, in all seriousness, but with so many of the BDH's doing well in other places, I don't see it happening. At least not with the original actors.

It's a shame, too. Might still get another movie, though that's not the same as a weekly series.

BTW, Chris, sneaky way to get attention, ROFL. Good idea. isall

The last few seconds of Journeyman was better than anything Quantum Leap ever did. But you don't see me saying it was better.

I agree with everyone else(like there was a doubt). I'll even go so far as to say that even IF Joss ever brings Firefly back in some form on TV it wouldn't be as good. Even with all the original cast, crew, writing staff... fans... It still wouldn't be enough to capture what Joss and crew made with the first bit. I can see it being better sometimes than an episode or two of the first season. No way it'll ever capture the emotions of Firefly. And I seriously doubt Firefly will ever return. At best we'll get another series in the 'verse in a few years. Firefly is over.. but the story ain't. The characters have alot more to tell I feel. Joss knows this, or he wouldn't even bother doing comics(which btw I'm not really a huge fan of).

Keep writing dood. Always good to see creativity. Looking forward to reading it one of these days.

For me... Supernatural is filling the void left by Buffy. But Buffy is still the best thing to get over Buffy not being on the air no more. *Sniff*
