Okay, I got new bedding and I'm just so excited that I can't help but share. I know this thread is mostly of the male persuasion these days, but humor me....

New duvet/shams:

New sheets (in Pineapple) I already have a tone on tone stripe set in the same green as the 'palm' colored ones)

Possible new rug in Green (will unite the new yellow and green with my current blue walls):

I'm sooooooo excited. I can't wait 'til they arrive. They must get here now. You know how some of you are camera 'companions'? Well, I have an issue with linens. I LOVE them. I would constantly be redecorating if it wasn't so expensive.

Anyway...that is all. Back to the little tap, tap, little tapping....

The tapping is because we killed him off a few days back, in the League of Psychic Nutcases thread. We still have no idea what he's trying to say, or even what the little taps signify.

I like the new duvet/shams- very citrusy

Wow I didn't realize things were so lethal over there. Maybe he's trying to get out of his crypt. Anybody know Morse Code?

(Bug, I bet your linens are crisp, too, aren't they? And they are quite citrusy.)

I actually liked the first one better. The second was pathetic IMO. Alba somehow didn't even look very hot in the second. Sadly I think they could have done a much better casting job for sue storm. Alba just doesn't look the part.

Alba should stick to photo shoots. Acting isn't her strong suit.

But let's look at the 3rd movie, shall we?

OOPS!

Here:

Me can hardly wait. Plus more Alba. (Thing? Thing who?) Zeek, she don't need to act.

Seriously though, who woulda been your choice for the Invisible Girl Woman?

I don't really know, but off the top of my head I'd take Rachel McAdams. She's hot and can act IMO.

edit: *snip* (silly imdb being all crafty and stopping me from hotlinking bah you probably know what she looks like)

The board ate my previous attempt to respond. Here we go again.

1.) No. That's just being human. You're going to be attracted to a certain physical appearance and you don't really have a choice in that matter. It's chemical IMO and besides probably none of us have the same definition of good looking people.

2.) Yes. If that's all you're looking for then you're shallow.

Ack! The board ate my post. Lets see if it thinks this one is tasty, too.

Pretty much agreeing with you, Zeek. Being attracted to certain people is what Mother Nature programmed into us to make sure we'd all have kids. It's not shallow. But if all you're looking at is the bod, then yeah, that's pretty shallow.

Well, you don't have to know morse code- just look it up on Wikipedia. Gotta love that site. One thing I don't understand, though, is that all my teachers say that Wiki's an unreliable source, when they can't seem to figure out that they have citations avalible, and that Wiki warns you if an article doesn't have citations. Grr, argh. One of my sore points. Sorry 'bout that.

Think nothing of it. What they (and by "they" I mean, you know, "Them") don't get is that today's "unreliability" is tomorrow's canon, and today's FACT is yesterday's myth. It's how the whole folklore thing works. Remember we didn't used to make national decisions without checking what the chicken poop had to say.

I own a 1939 encyclopedia, which is actually a 1933 encyclopedia that had a couple (and I mean that almost literally; the earlier edition was published before the Hindenberg and they devoted some special attention to it in the "revised" edition. Not much else changed between 1933 and 1939.) It's really great. I wouldn't trade it for anything. Do I believe what it says? Well, yes I do. But not because it says so: I know what I know from other sources.

For instance, did you know that Germany has a new Chancellor named Adolf Hitler. It will be interesting to see how this leader turns out. Certainly hope it's better than that Zeppelin thingy of his. Now you gotta admit that this little mention, again from the revised edition, is factual. Is it--God what is the word I'm even looking for here--reliable? Well let's just hope you don't have to write about rockets or jets or atomic bombs. I mean all of the pictures of Aeroplanes are of biplanes, like in King Kong (also from 1933, btw).

Play their game. They are Luddites. (Look that up in Wikipedia if you don't know what it means.) Quote from Wiki's citations. The beautiful thing about citations of course is...they could be wrong! Doesn't matter. You are only quoting them. And best of all, your source could be from one of there "acceptable" sources!! Hah!

I think it's only a matter of time before teachers start accepting that wikipedia is a decent source of information.

Now the real question is what happens when something you quoted from them is removed by the time you turn in your paper. Did you just make it up or was it really there when you looked? Screenshot references?

EMMARIGBY

Hey guys,

I know I've not posted in these threads since pretty much the start when dear old Tristan gave birth to the little idea, this is because I am usually too busy to keep up with your highly loquacious and eager selves (much as I would wish to).

But whilst students are on holiday I should like to return to the fray if I may (*waves delightedly at all old friends and beams at people not spoken to yet*).

The whole wiki thing is actually one of my pet peeves but, being a University lecturer I come at it from the opposite point of view. I'm sure that there are some anal pedants out there who are just resistant to new technologies but, speaking as a scientist, there is a very good reason for hating wiki citations in an essay. Any 'facts' expressed here are not always guaranteed to be peer reviewed, i.e. checked out by a qualified professional as being likely to be accurate. Usually my students use this as a shortcut to avoid going to the bother of looking up the original research in journals. I consider this both rude to those researchers and dangerous (although accuracy is pretty good there are a few crackpots who sound plausible - not good to base serious research on quicksand).

However the main reason I tend to go purple and growl is that it is often just laziness. As you point out, most pages on Wikipedia have links to original sources of info. How hard is it to follow these and check them out and cite them properly?

Okay, you may now mock me for being an antiquated fuddy-duddy. I'm afraid it comes with the job.

Now, what else were you talking about?

Howdy to you. I think you'll find the imponderables are MUCH easier to keep up with these days. :D and :(

JQ: WTH are you muttering about? That a 1939 encyclopedia isn't believable (or accurate) today? It's accurate for its time. It has little to do with Wikipedia and the resistance to see it as an accurate source of information.

The problem with wiki is that ANYONE can post articles, add information, change information. Articles are checked for relevance (like when the Johnny Mandate was added and then deleted) but not for accuracy. It's like reading historical fiction or watching an historical film and taking the information as fact. You just can't do that. You've got to follow up the information gathered at Wiki with more sources to verify...but most people don't do that.

Hey Rugbug! Great to see you again. How's the horsey?

You have summarised my main point about Wiki. I keep meaning to get my students to post something on there whilst knowing absolutely nothing about it just to drive home the point to them (what?! I'd remove the rubbish afterwards!)

Whilst I'm still on one of my rants can I diversify into cursing all websites (yes, I am aware of the irony!). Yes, the internet is a fantastic resource (*mumbles in a doddery voice* In my day we had to look everything up by file cards and find it in the archives!). Students today don't know how good they have it with information springing straight to their fingertips. The problem as a marker is that pesky cut and paste function! When you are taking notes from books and journals there is less of a temptation to simply lift paragraphs wholesale. I mention this because I am currently marking an essay that has a very good paragraph with "please click here for further information" nestling ominously in the middle! Not subtle! I am now put to the trouble of having to aquire a permit for a firearm in order to adequately punish this student.

*pant pant*

Okay, I'm done. Thank you for listening!

Edit: Oooh! Urination during ablutions! A much more dignified topic. Personally I find nothing wrong with this as long as you are not sharing a shower and have some intention of cleaning it afterwards! (See boys, this is a cloth and this magic green liquid gets rid of the mould and smell! Sorry, I know I'm sexist!)

I've always been jealous of the ease with which men can have a sneaky pee, especially when drunk. You can just pretend to be very interested in an alley wall. No getting frostbite, mooning your vicar, tripping over your trousers and loosing control of the direction of flow for you guys (was this too much information? I think so.)

I think I'm glad you don't have this ability. It makes it sound like you want to use it for evil.

Don't you know with great power comes great responsibility?

*blinks*...I was going to reply to the website discussion, but got slightly side-tracked by the pee story....

I love wikipedia, because it does direct you to further websites, thus saving quite a lot of buggering about refining searches initially. (Dial-up sucks.) But I'm old enough that we had to hand-write our essays at Uni, so even if you wanted to, er, borrow someone's research, you still had to write the thing out.

I love the idiot-edit - I hope you just put a big red marker round it, and return the document. Preferably wrapped round a rock. Alternatively, go 'Name of the Rose', and put some invisible poisonous substance on said essay paper...

And now I have another question, because I just can't understand my parents. Why do they keep pushing me outside? I'm staying out of their hair, I'm not eating alot, this computer is mine alone, it's not like they need to use this computer too, and I'm just baffled. Why can't they leave me alone?

They can't apprehend the notion that spending time on your computer can be just as productive and enriching as spending hours outside lying around in the grass thinking about how blue the sky really is.

Either that, or you're playing games non-stop. Are you playing games non-stop? 'Cause that can do funny things to your brain ...

No, I can't play internet games- they don't hold my attention for very long. All my time on the comp is here with you guys, or playing with grapics.
