Imponderables- Wake to Joy by MSB

The thing is that I know what she's thinking. She's thinking of Trekkies and I can't really blame her for that. In my mind I like to think that the browncoats are way better than trekkies. The community has always been so friendly, open and inviting. Granted we do have our disagreements (see the fox guy at an airport thread), but for the most part everybody is very accepting of each other. It was exactly the same meeting a whole group of browncoats in real life. They were totally friendly and yeah a lot of them are weirdos, but they're nice weirdos. So, the get dressed up like Jayne sometimes. So what? They're nice, friendly people and they do a lot of good volunteering and raising money for charity. Putting them down is a quick way to get me to boot a person to the curb.

Especially when I was sitting right next to another person I introduced to Firefly who thinks it's a great show. She's not as big a browncoat as me, but she was saying how she loves every episode. What mental malfunction made other girl think "now's a good time to rip on fans of the show".

I'm currently in the process of having a person I've only talked to a few times go try out a horse for me. She lives within an hour of the horse...I'm 7 hours away. I'm pretty sure I will have a new friend after this. :P I think that's pretty cool.

Hmmm that logic ain't half dumb. Though I think working in a tech field does sorta make sense for me to be friends with other tech nerds. At lot of things seem to fall into place with techies. Videogames, taste in movies/shows, lack of fashion sense, etc.

I've not been dissapointed either, they're some of the best folk I've ever met. After hearing about Dragon*Con I really wanted to go, so last year I booked up and went. And I'm glad I did, and I'm glad I decided to meet up with the my online chums (most of whom I first found through this very website), cause I had a great time.

I agree about it being a natural process too, they're as real a friend as anyone I've met in person before getting to know.

So, MsB & NVG were in Vegas recently right? What did you guys think of the weather? weather.com makes it sound like warm in the day and chilly at night. Was it shorts weather during the day or more like jeans and a t-shirt? Did you need a sweatshirt/jacket at night time? Any other advice that could aid in packing?

I would suggest a very light jacket and a sweater(s) of some sorts. It really wasn't bad at night but I am used to warm days and cold nights. What do you plan on doing while there Zeek? If you'll be outside shorts is not a bad choice. Jeans most time of the year in Vegas will get warm with the exception od two or three months out of the year. I mostly wore jeans/cargo's and t-shirts the whole time we were there.

The plan is mainly just to hit the strip. Go to casinos, shows, hit on some hookers. You know the standard

We'd pretty much be walking everywhere and going from one end of the strip to the other can be a hike. So, I don't want to be drenched in sweat just getting from place to place, but I also don't want to freeze to death.

I've been in the nice 70s - 80s weather of austin for a while now and I have yet to switch to shorts. So, I was figuring I'd probably just stick with jeans with like a polo shirt or something during the day. The problem is then it would probably be a little too cold at night to walk around in that. weather.com is saying lows in the 50s. Maybe I'll bring a light jacket or something.

Meh, hooker hitting in those threads should be fine. I would bring a light jacket just in case because it does get a bit breezy but mostly artificial air is much different than being in the open. Too bad you'll just be on the strip. There is much more to Vegas than that.

Anything I should look into? Me and my brother are mainly just touristy and it's just a quick weekend trip. We might hit downtown Vegas too, but that was just older casinos the one time we went there before. Though it was fun to play slot machines that actually spit out quarters.

Hmm the Mandalay Bay has a great shark aquarium and I would reccommend Club Paradise if you're in the mood for strippers ( they cater to all tastes)

I'd say it was warmish during the day and brisk at night so jeans, tee, jacket would be fine. I do love that you're assuming you'll win said quarters...giggle

Well last time we were there the slots were paying off like crazy in downtown vegas.

Plus I had the latest flight out of all my friends so when I was just roaming the strip alone I played a penny slot for a while and I hit some crazy combo thing and ended up ahead $20. I was cursing that I was only playing the penny level after that.

Good morning. Please excuse the follwing rant as I am particular the material and wished better for it.

Sorry you were subjected to that Nick Cage hype of a pile FLT. Take the dark moments and multiply by fifty and replace Nick Cage with someone like Barry Pepper or Jake Busey and set it in the real Southwest and you'd have what the movie was supposed to be. Not the one line, do good, get in the last word terd sliding down the side of the bowl debaucle Mark Steven Johnson spit out. I can get why with Nick Cage involved and calling the shots (just like how Bruce Willis crapped all over Tears Of The Sun and Antoine Fuqua). Okay, Australia is gorgeous. But it really threw me off. I thought it was an American movie about an American comic icon. Why don't we just film Captain America in Canada now?

Okay, senseless ranting over. For entertainment, yeah, it was okay. I actually watched it twice in the theater. But if it were what it was meant to be I would have seen it three or four times much the way I did Sin City and Grindhouse.

Melbourne, that is where they filmed the flick. Beautiful and captivating still, but it is not the American SOuthwest. Production value can only go so far for many, MANY people who have seen the southwestern part of the US. I am assuming you never saw any of the comics associated with the character. I seen them as a small child but only started to read when I gained an interest in art in the early 90's. the cover art was fantastic. When I opened the cover and saw that it was no longer the simple lines and ink from a decade before I was hooked. And when I really started to study writting and story telling I naturally looked there first. I was first a fan of Frank miller in 1988 when I saw a reprint of The Dark Knight Returns and was facinated by an old Batman who was no longer Batman, a Gotham City dirty and uncaring without it's hero, an over compensating Superman as he should be shown, and the return of a hero who decides he's gotta get down and dirty to make the city he loves safe again before he dies. Other story lines follow in other books including the Ghost Rider off shoots like Spirits Of Vengeance or the Spiderman off shoots llike Morbius and Blade which all converged in the 90's in several instances that made for fabulous story telling and art work. Now it's to the point where I want that back but can't seem to find it, the creation in my head is at a stand still, and I grow increasingly frustrated with the line of crap we are forced to endure simply because there is nothing else to see.

NV: don't hate me, but I liked the movie. :shrug: I have no attachment to the comic or to the southwest, so it worked for me. I don't think Jake Busey could pull off the subtleties needed to make the target audience sympathize with the ghost rider's plight.

Now, you're probably not the target audience. You're the part of the audience that the movie-makers fear: The one who knows and has an attachment to the comic. You already like the character, so you don't need to sympathize. You want to see the badass. The rest of us need to root for a hero...and an unsympathetic badass isn't a hero.

But whatever. I like Nic Cage. Thought the movie was fun...parts of it scared me a bit. It's all good, IMO.

So 'Bug, I see the others I named more like the Johnny Blaze described as a person. Very cocky and self assured but secretly broken worse than truly shows on their face. One thing about Johnny Blaze holds true though, you have to dislike him at least a little bit to sympathize with him. He knows what he's doing is just as evil as the evil things he fights. He's just got to be a bit badder to get the job done. A true anti-hero. The best idea would have been to find a lesser name with a few less miles. But hey, I did like the flick. When I catch it partially on the cable channels I tend to watch like a little kid. I guess if it were made the way the material was intended it might have ended up an R movie much the way the last Punisher flick was released. I really liked the way that one ended up. Now we can hope for another movie (far fetched) but there is another string of series alternate to those called 2099. Most of the Marvel Universe was involved including the Ghost Rider. THis time he is a resurrected cyber-punk battling a corporation in a dirty mega city with its own nuances and language (sound slightly familiar). Freakin' awesome. DESKTOPHIPPIE

Funnily enough, one of my favourite comics is set in the Southwest. It's a DC Comic - Blue Beetle. Basically, the latest Blue Beetle is a Mexican American teenager called Jaime Reyes, who lives in El Paso. It's a great comic, a really fun read. Well worth picking up for those thatway inclined.

I have to say the movie was wasted on me, though; I didn't like the plot (I only saw the beginning), and I didn't know the comic, so there wasn't anything for me to make me keep watching it.

Besides, personally, the only comics I like are manga. I <3 manga!

yeah, NV, i'll agree with you on the casting of Ghost Rider. but..not Busey >< def not. and i dun know who the other guy is, so i can't judge on him. they needed someone..rougher, i guess :-P

MANGA!!! I don't read it, but i do have the occasional anime night with my friends when we watch the latest of their discoveries in the anime world.

It is worth watching RF. Some of the basic elements of the story are there. A reluctant hero who is posessed by a vengeful demon who learns he can use the bad parts of him for some sort of good. Just a bit melodramatic with Cage under the skull.

I watched the end of Enemy Of The State and The Frighteners last week and realized that Busey has some ability yet untapped. Sems he has seen more than his share of sorrowful moments (C'mon, his dad is Gary Busey) and has the sadness and reluctance and cocky demenor with the ability to get rough I expect for a character like Blaze. Barry Pepper played Jackson (the sniper) in Saving Private Ryan, the reporter in We Were Soldiers, and many other roles. He too has the same qualities I expect for the character of Blaze (see Knock Around Guys).

I love picking up Manga evey now and then. When I get the bucks I hope to buy the whole Nobuhiro Watsuki saga of Rurouni Kenshin.

Hey all... oh thank the goddess it's Friday. Now I just have on mail related errand to run and i can lie on the couch unmoving for a while.... My shoulder's been bothering me and then today I had to do a full restraint of a violent autistic child and I am covered in bruises, gouges, and the shoulder's pretty much toasted.On the upside he wasn't able to bite me hard enough to break the skin which is more than can be said for his aide, teacher, and another student.

DTH- Hey I saw that...luckily I totally understand how irrisistable he is... now just keep those hands where I can see them:)
