Jayne, "We applied the cortical electrodes
but were unable to get a neural
reaction from either patient."

Watched “Ariel” again last night (for about the 100th time) and I can’t help it. Every time Jayne mutters those words I LMAO. It’s perfection.

The show continues on with Simon doing honorable things like, coming up with a criminal master plan only to help his sister, and saving the patient of a doctor that shouldn’t even be there. Seems the whole episode evolves around Simon (and River) being ordinary yet extraordinary people and so valued that Jayne will soon forget his wicked plans of turning them in. I mean the look on Jayne’s face a couple of times has you believing that he has changed his mind about the reward. Yet, in true twisty turny fashion, greed and self-absorption win out and they all get caught.

What are some of the lines (you know when they’re coming) you find yourself waiting for even though you’ve heard them a million times?

It's not a line, actually. It's in "Our Mrs. Reynolds" when they first find Saffron on the ship. They're in the cargo bay, and Zoe has called everyone in. There's this one brief moment when the camera is close up on Saffron, she's looking at Mal, but you see Jayne's hand reach over and kind of paw at her shoulder, awkwardly. You can just hear the unspoken... "Touch... woman... purdy..." in the gesture. It cracks me up every time.

"No one likes the idea of hearing what you're thinking."

Inara to Hayne. Just love that line.

What Joss and the writers did was write the characters as real humans, not set pieces in a soap opera (no offense, Nathan) or a sitcom. No laugh track or innuendo or double entendre, just real people living a real life. Plain talk from plain folk, straight up and to the point.

"I don't like the idea of someone hearing what I'm thinking."

River's very first "moron" look. In The Train Job, just after she wakes up and starts freaking out.

SIMON:
River? River. It's okay. We're safe here. Do you know who I am?

RIVER:
*pausing mid-sob to glare one-eyed*
Simon.

It's just her delivery. There's an unspoken "I'm not amnesiac, idiot."

Great posts everybody. You guys had me chuckling the whole time I was reading what’s been put up here.
Something else I’m seeing a lot of with the posts here, not just the lines and the delivery of those lines are so darn perfect, but also the facial expressions. The flow is so smooth. Not like actors hitting their mark then waiting till the next person hits theirs. There’s just a real rhythm to it all. A flow.

Now for another:

Jayne OMR, “ You got a wife? All I got was that dumb ass stick sounds like it’s rainin. How come you got a wife?”…….I’m laughing just hearing that one in my head.

Jaynestown is not my favorite episode, but sometimes I slip it in just to see Jayne emerge from Serenity at Canton in that get-up. Covered head to toe in his cowardly and conspicuous disguise, and the other BDHs just sort of going with the flow, trying to ignore his wierdness. Wearing the whole thing indoors, in the hot sun, everywhere. Cracks me up. Meanwhile Simon helps out with the crime activity.

I also look forward to Mal's "that has an effect on the landscape" in the Pilot, as well as Jayne and Mal racing to get inside the cargo doors after dumping Dobson - can't help but recall the commentary for that stunt.

Another one I like is from Jaynestown too.
The exchange between Malcolm and Mr.Cobb.

“ Think we should be usin my fame to hoodwink people? Maybe there’s something to this. I think I really made a difference in their lives….me, Jayne Cobb.”

“ I know your name jackass…”

Mal kinda trying to deflate the big guys head a bit. Taking the wind outta his sails a little. Telling him that he may be the Hero of Canton to these folk but to him and the rest of the crew on Serenity he’s still just “Jayne Cobb”.

Kaylee has some good lines in that one too.

“Gee Simon that was so historical.”

“Hamsters is nice.”

“What’d ya mean not with me?”

“That didn’t sound half bad.”

“Oh… honey!”

**Punch!**

MAL: "Drunks are cute."

The bar scene from The Train Job always cracks me up. A great delivery of lines from Mal, and that punch! Hehe. It was a great stunt.

Another one of my favourites includes the 'dear diary scene' from Safe. It NEVER gets old.. Every time it comes on, I have to speak along with Adam Baldwin. That's my favourite Jayne moment from the series.

This line is a serious one, and it gets me every time...from Train Job :
After the Sheriff realizes that they've returned the stolen medicine he makes a little speech about times being tough, and a person might not look too closely as to what he was stealing; then that person finds out about a situation like theirs...well...then they have a choice. Mal says..." I don't believe they do." The Sheriff looks at him again deeply, and then allows everyone to go their way. I always found that exchange quite powerful.

When Nathan was on Ellen, he talked about how someone on the soap opera (all my children?) taught him the three looks to use when the camera pushes in on that going-to-commercial close-up. Each one can apply to any given situation in the script:

The shocked, "Did I leave the stove on?"

The thoughtful, "I think I turned the stove off."

And the decisive but ultimately sexy, "Yes. I turned the stove off."

It's on YouTube somewhere. I gotta go find it again.

I think he learned a fourth, though, when Saffron says, "but Mr. Reynolds, sir, I'm your wife."

That *LOOK* he gave her is what hooked me on Firefly for all time... and put Nathan at the top of my "Man-Toy" list.

Also must watch OMR for that "Woman, me touch" look from Jayne.

I can't list all the quotes I adore and wait for. This post is long enough already.

Yep, Nathan started his career on One Life To Live as Joey Buchanan. Mid 1990's I think. His character had a hot and heavy affair with Dorian, who was much older and his mother's hated rival

He returned last July for the "funeral" of Asa Buchanan along with more than a few OLTL alumni.

I also think "Desperate Housewives" could be classified as a prime time soaper.

Wash "he's not gonna get days" in War stories. Plus "he's crazy" and Zoe commiserating when she thinks he's talking about Niska.
Work, Work, Work to end his role in Pilot.

Jayne's "What" when his weapons charge louder while everybody else is loading for bear in War Stories.

Also in War Stories, anticipating the look Book gives when Jayne says "I'll be in my bunk" and Zoe says "grab your weapon" (or is it grab your gun"?)

This helps me remember that the thing that stands out about these scenes, and perhaps an alternate title to this thread, is that I annot be in mid-sip when these lines come up - or I might choke on my beverage if not paying attention.

Definitely what jewelstaitefan ^^^^said.

And I love (and not a quote) and wait for it during the delivery scene in Heart of Gold when River, looking intently asks, I wonder who's in there? I giggle every time to that one.

At the end of Objects in Space, when River (having just returned from Early's ship) says something about having to look after Simon, that line is pretty cute and really suits her.

OiS is also not one of my faves, but I look forward to when River returns to Serenity. Mybe it's the visual of her floating down, but also something either her or Mal says, like a coming home statement. As if Mal now accepts her more than ever before. Poignant.

And in Bushwhacked, waiting for the look on her face as she views the verse from her space suit helmet, ignoring terrified Simon, and then "can we go again" or similar.

Jayne wasn't pawing Saffron to be a perv (much), he was trying to be comforting, in a dumbass way. It's the bored way Kaylee pushes him away that cracks me up. Just "Oh, for god's sake, Jayne."

Also later when they're driving by on the mule and Zoey says " Jayne! Is that really him? Someone pinch me I must be dreaming!"

The surprised reaction of Jayne is like, Gorram, word gets around really quickly around here. Then his responce," Hell I'll pinch ya!" is perfect character interaction. It's great!

All of War Stories ...just brilliant writing!

May be the best is at the end when Zoe says "The Captain's gotta do this." as Mal fights with Niska's henchman.

"Oh no, I don't" Mal says and ducks as Zoe, Jayne and Wash together unload lead into the henchman.

According to the commentary it was Joss's "Tarantino moment."

Line for line, OMR has to be one of the all-time

Both Jewel and Morena do some fantastic work…

Morena in Jaynestown

“……..Jayne your talking about Jayne Cobb?!!”

Fess,” Yes Jayne Cobb, the hero of Canton. The only man that ever stood of to my father. I kinda hate the idea of him getting caught.”

Inara. “ …Yes, that would be bad!”

Morena does such a great job. Her eyes moving all around, you can see she’s a little miffed because she got it all wrong thinking he was speaking of Mal.

Objects in Space is a Jewel for Jewel. When she looks up and is faced with Jubal Early, that whole scene is gold. I fear her fear. Don’t think that scene coulda been played better by anyone. She nailed it.

Morena is awesome as well, between her and Adam in Sands of Oblivion, their screen time and talents saved it being a 'complete' bottom feeder film.

And you nailed it about 'Jewels' scene in OiS, couldn't have said it better myself, she really did make us feel her fear.

Mal's expression in the scrapyard when he first see's Serenity says it all.

Here it is, and I love Nathan's cat story!

All of the posts are great. So many to chose from it's good to share it with everyone. Here is my all-time favorite that has me on the floor LMAO.
It's delivered by Book in OMR. Come on, say it with me - "The Special Hell." Its not only the delivery, but the quick look around the corner that Book gives to Mal and just as quick he disappears down the hall.
Also in OMR: Wash, Mal, Zoe and Saffron in the mess hall. Saffron says she didn't cook for everyone ans suggests to Zoe that she could cook for her man. The look Zoe gives Wash as he nervously laughs and says:
"Isn't she quaint!" Classic comic timing.
Just one more: In OIS when River is telling Mal what to do, he scrunches his face and she tells him "Don't make a face." The look on his face is priceless, as if to say she can see me.
P.S. I too loved the "Welcome Aboard" from Mal to River at the end of OIS.

Shiny! Let's be bad guys!

Thank you for that. I'll be sending it to my e-mail to watch later. Work has blocked YouTube as well. Isn't that just the way?

As Ellen said, if Nathan hadn't been sexy enough already, that cat story pretty much clinched it. Yeah... I think THAT is how he got to the top of my "Mantoy" list and stayed there.
