has there been a well known survey?

do peeps have a preference - which shanty shivers the timbers of the shipmates here?

i would go for... Serenity (just) but i love the niska theme of the tv cd - and is it me, or does that track get sampled by Rome AND BSG?

anyway - do people like one or the other more?

For me it is SERENITY. Those haunting few notes as we see the Serenity Logo on the side of the ship are just beautifully sad.

I must admit i wasn't as taken with the Firefly music as much as Joss' other shows, however the Message and Objects in Space had some wonderful stuff. Especially Early's theme. Very nice indeed.

I liked them both but I think I would choose Firefly's version.

Word. The score Serenity is my favorite score, period (Beating out various favorites in my extensive score collection, beating out Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon). The cello at the beginning is mournful and feels orient and folk at the same time, as the rest of the instruments fall in place and lead to a more adventurous beat, the entire peace embodies the essence of what Firefly/Serenity is.

However on the Firefly soundtrack I particularly love Inara's Suite and Inside the Tam House. I've been listening to them continuously to get inspiration for writing about Sihnon, and I think they show another side of the series. Often the Firefly score is twangy and rustic, western, but these two are more of the Asian influence, more of the Core and they bare as certain elegance and sound that hardly sound like a TV Score.

My favorite would be Firefly. The mix of bluegrass, pan-Asian, piano and violin music is really well-done. Specifically, my favorite track is The Funeral. The poingancy of The Funeral is very moving especially since I heard that the episode, The Message, where this song is played was the final one filmed. You can sense the actors' sadness knowing that this was the final time working together (but hopefully they will get to work together on another Firefly/Serenity series or movie )

serenity all the way

i love nearly all the soundtrack, especially the first 5 or 6 pieces and the final 5 or 6 after the somewhat bombastic fight music. agree 100% with the earlier poster about how perfect the serenity theme is. i'd also add that the trading station robbery, river's theme (and the way it appears numerous times during the soundtrack as a leitmotif), the funeral/rebuilding serenity, love, and prep for flight are all haunting and beautiful. david newman got it.

Wanted to say something like that but doubt I could one up that description.

It's like a melancholy call for freedom and it gets me everytime.

The music from Firefly, its such a range from joyous (rivers jig) to the haunting mournful sound of the message. the music from serenity was nice, but in my mind, it did not blend as seemlessly as the tv shows music did.

Both, FF the Funeral scene in The Message was tops! But I love the intro to serenity with the change from the haunting notes to the western theme. And the end music in Serenity where she flies again!

you know.. nothing quite sends the chills down your spine like a theater full of browncoats quietly singing along with the themesong during the credits. THAT is an amazingly touching experience.

THough I still stand by Greg Edmonson's music being superior lol, but then again I got to hang out with him for a full weekend and he is just awesome and down to earth.

Greg Edmonson's scoring of Firefly was just-so-unique and (except for River's Theme)
David Newman's was just-so-generic.
Normally, the purpose of a score is to hide in the background and add a sense of mood,
which David Newman's very professional score did.
But Greg Edmonson's score was like another person in the room with you.
It really lept out of the screen and intensified the feelings of the moment.
The viewer and the score breathed a sigh of relief together when Mal and the crew "mooned" the Dortmunder.
The viewer and the score felt the dread of the "Bushwacked" ship.
The viewer and the score sat for dinner with the crew at the end of "Safe".
The viewer and the score felt the sad homecoming of Tracey's funeral and the joy of the improvised basketball game that opens "Bushwacked".
Edmonson evoked the western style but was never a slave to it.
And as final note, Newman's score used horns to loudly proclaim, "I'm a big movie score!" where Greg hardly ever used horns,
truer to Joss' original concept for the scoring of the 'verse.
David Newman did a top-notch job and there are things that show he genuinely cared about producing a great score, but Greg's work more captured the ethos of the 'verse, in my opinion.

uh, i'm thinking you're missing a very big musical planet of the apes gag... and i'm guessing that was Joss.

Funnily enough - for me it's the serenity soundtrack that has grown on me, the mix of real and synthesized instrumentation is pretty wild.

But this aint to deny that Greg's tv score is groundbreaking (and heart breaking!) - hell i hear it all over the place in other shows now.

... fully loaded, safety off...

I favor Edmundson's over Newman's - both have their moments, just seems like E's has more of them and more variety. No dis to Newman either, he had less footage to work with and was slightly more limited from E's work and it's popularity with fans. Serenity opening, Funeral/Rebuilding Serenity, and Love are pretty special though - if they don't raise a bump or 2 you are made of stone...
