Memos memos memos. Feels like my life is memos. Oh well. Beats having to tell each of my techs what I want done. I really REALLY hate telling people what to do.

Why do some people just hate doing what they are good at?

Ponder from the other day: I miss coming in late afternoon from walking all day to shoot rabbits. Mom would have soup or stew or beans all hot on the stove with bread under a damp towel. It was a lucky day to get the first piece of bread.

lol always good to have someone send out a not with a manager copied on it where they call you "super awesome". I should answer questions more often if it comes with that kind of praise.

Oh my goodness! It's like a reunion in here! Hi Johnny! It's been months and months since I saw you last!!! How are you?

Odds!!! (Are you still my jailbait? Do you realise I am on the same piece of land as you... OK... I am at the far end of it from Edinburgh, but I am in the UK! I am alive and well and living in Kent and loving it!!
(Also in a wonderful relationship, but that's a whole 'nother story!)

DTH!!!! Oh golly gee! I haven't seen you for ages either! I loves my fff.net friends and I just don't make it in here often enough - I really ought to make an effort to come in every day this week... except for perhaps the weekend... but it is so wonderful to see you again Honey!

Hugs and kisses to NVG, MsB, poor FLX and anyone else she missed! I have a sick boy in bed and I have to keep an ear open for 'bathroom noises!' It's one of the icky aspects of my wonderful job!

Were we pondering something? I wouldn't mind pondering something if you are...?

HUGS DTH anytime sweety... want my recipe so you can make it for real? It's ultra simple and tastes awesome. Of course I won't be baking bread until later this evening 'cause it's summer and oven on 350 for an hour will heat up the house big time.

MsB, post the bread recipe. I've never tried making bread for real. Me and my brother got my mom a bread maker once and we used that some, but it's really cheating. What does it take to make real bread?

No, regular jello. (We call it jelly.)

I just put the jello cubes in a pot and put it on the stove, and waited for the cubes to melt.

Well no one *told* me about the boiling water thing...

DTH try this then...you really can't mess this up. It's rolls you make in the blender

1 cup milk
2 eggs
2 teaspoons salt
1/6 cup sugar
1/2 cup corn or light oil
4 teaspoons baking powder
Flour

Put everything but flour in the blender and blend. Add flour gradually and blend until it looks like thick pancake batter. Pour batter into greased muffin tin cups. Bake at 375 degrees until light brown and puffy

Ok now for the real and nifty bread rcipe

2 cups water
4 teaspoons salt
1 cup sugar
1 cup Crisco or similar vegetable shortening
1/4 cup lukewarm water( with a pinch of sugar in it)
3 tablespoons yeast
2 eggs
5 cups flour ( may need a bit more than this)

Put the 1/4 cup water with pinch of sugar in a small bowl and sprinkle yeast on top. Set it aside. heat the 2 cups of water until it hurts your finger. Remove from heat and add salt, sugar, and Crisco. break 2 eggs into the mixing bowl and add the water, crisco, salt, sugar mixture. Add flour and mix. when the mixture is lukewarm add the yeast water. Keep adding flour until the dough is stiff and not very sticky. Cover the dough with a cloth and let it rise. Push it down and let it rise again. Knead the dough for about a minute. Shape and place in bread pans. Cover and let it rise again. Bake 350 degrees until brown ( about 40 minutes)

HUGS DTH see you're not a bad cook, you just had bad instructions. I had that happen with a cake recipe mom gave me. She listed ingredients and quantities, but forgot directions. I tried to wing it and it sucked:)

Pissaladiere

Mix 275g strong plain flour, a sachet of yeast (7g) and a pinch of salt. Add in 2 tsp olive oil and 250 ml warm water. Mix, knead out on a floured surface, then dump back in the bowl, cover with clingfilm and leave in the warm for an hour.

Meanwhile cook down 1.5 kg onions (about six, usually) finely sliced in olive oil, maybe a little butter if you like, and a good bunch of herbs (you want to take this out later, so tie 'em together) You want a good, thick onion mush. Season as wished.

Turn the dough out, knead it again, then push it out on an oiled baking tray. Put a thin layer of anchovy paste (bash a couple up in their oil) then the onions, leaving a border. Criss cross with slices of anchovy fillet, and faff about putting black olives in the gaps. Leave it while your oven gets to its max heat, then bake for 15 -20 minutes.

'Course, if folks are wussy about anchovies, up until that point, you got a perfectly good thick-crust pizza base...

OK... so do we, but we have a powdered variety... you pour boiling water over the jelly powder and stir and then leave it to set in the fridge!

Childhood memories... licking the bowl when Mum has made the Christmas pudding or Christmas cake or a pavlova! It was such a treat!

Funnily enough when I first read the ponder on your post MsB I though of my Dad taking us on a drive (who can afford to do that now?) either to a historical home, or a place where we could play... or going on holiday and staying by the beach or climbing a mountain and not having a care in the world! Funny how I'd like to go back to the simplicity of childhood... but definitely not back to school, or to my teen years with all their insecurities and fears...

I know where I'd like to be right now! But I'll just have to wait... how long til D*C again?

It's funny, my first thought when I read the current imponderable was what I'd do DIFFERENTLY if I could relive an event as a kid but with my current knowledge/ experience.

I was bullied quite badly as a kid and I've thought many times how great it would have been on a couple of occasions to just raise an eyebrow in a mocking, disinterested way and come out with a witty put-down instead of bursting into tears. Plus I know a bit of Ju Jitsu now!
Oh, and think what a genius I could have been at school at age 7 with current knowledge!
Hmm, if I had to go through school again, I wonder if I'd end up smarter and have several degrees by 'now' or would I hit a ceiling?

Am I the only one who has day dreams like this?!

I'm just grateful that we don't have easily available guns in this country.

I'd have been the weird kid in the greatcoat who had a Columbine moment...

(Witty put-downs are wasted on the stupid. But a chair across the mouth gets the point across.)

I read a book once that had the protagonist wake up sixteen again. To my mind, that's a fucking horror story. I like being my age - own home, own car, own time, own money (well, own husband's money), own destiny.

But if I had my time over again, I'd be braver. A lot less inclined to try and please other people - it only leads to ulcers.

I think that's the wrong approach. You don't have to be combative to get them to stop. You have to show them that they have no effect on you. I was bullied and picked on to some extent but I would just let it roll off my back or throw them off by agreeing with them or something. By the end of gradeschool I was friends with the bullies and same thing happened by the end of high school. I always point to my senior year of high school when me (nerd), a football jock (guy tried to push me into a gym locker freshman year), a cheerleader and a druggie all partnered up (of our own free will) on a class project and it wasn't even so I'd do all the work. I was the biggest slacker really.

Anyway point is something about catching flies with honey or something. Note: don't give bullies honey. They'll probably pour it on you or something.

That's kind of what I meant (apart from the odd violent fantasy). I was quite emotional as a child and used to get really upset by the bullying - which of course made it worse.
I've had to toughen up since then (oh so much this first year of teaching), that I think I could have just laughed most of the bad stuff off were it to happen again.
Kind of jealose that you had that maturity to start with!

P.S. Bagsie a taste of the first batch of bread. Unless it's all hard and black...which of course it won't be!

Oooh SQUEEEE Magda. I do know where you want to be and I hope you get there soon as possible. Sadly D*C is 71 days away...sigh

Ooh good recipe Anjl I can totally see it with fresh tomato,( or sundried) seared lamb, calamata lives, and feta cheese then maybe sprinkled with chopped fresh basil and oregano after baking

HUGS Em I have to say ignoring is the best way to go unless it is physical violence. "Cause it's no fun to tease someone who doesn't give a rats ass I teach my students to respond to verbal provocation with a bland face and a deadpan " good to know" and then just walk away without looking back

Ok they delivered our sod at 6 am this morning and NV and I just spent 3 hours laying sod in the front, side, and backyard... wow on the manual labor thing. Luckily NV is awesomely strong so that made things tons easier. We have lawn:) ( though NV now has to go to work...:(

Everything comes with a price though. I think most of that maturity came from when my parents got divorced. I was 7 at the time and had to move to a totally new state. It brought such wonderful experiences as a 4 hour plane ride by myself. Single parent meant me and my brother had to fend for ourselves a lot of nights and stuff. So, trade one childhood trauma for another really.

Manual labour very bad...Can't even do light labour at moment. I have managed to pop a rib out up under my shoulder-blade (?!)- putting it back in was immense fun.

I feel rather like that Nordic goddess of the Underworld, Hel - the whole left side of my body is crap; broken and rehealed oddly, dislocated, muscles connected wrong, just rubbish.

Plus side...I have a kitchen. Only I'm too broken to be able to heave all my heavy pans into it.

WHITEFALL

Woo, got me internets back up, and with the help of some of my awesome friends from school, the crisis in which i screwed up (or thought I screwed up) my roommate's computer/internet has been more or less resolved. Yay. So life is better now.

Internship first day was grand, although orientation-y and dull in a way. But I'm looking forward to work tomorrow. yay. stuff to do and a place to do it and all that good stuff. Shall be glorious.

And it turns out I may well be going to Comic-Con, ironically enough. Which is exciting, i've never been to a proper convention. No BDH guests or anything, but still, twill be fun, and as long as I work at the Cartoon Network booth for a bit, they pay for teh hotel. Woo. Internship coolness. So that'll be cool, mehopes.

Childhood stuff to relive? Uh.... cant think of much, i tend to progressively get happier that i'm not in the past as time goes on, so there's that, although I do miss the theater days in high school already. Yeah that's about the only part i'd actually WANT to relive. That and my childhood friend who moved to switzerland nine years back. Yeah, gotta have pasts n' all that.

Argh, i need to get myself a chair, this wall is not good for back support.

"No power in the 'verse can stop me!"

I am going to bed folks, but I remembered my promise to myself to check in here every day! I am so thrilled to see old friends in here, Hey Whitefall! I am so excited for you that you got the internship! Wooo Hooo! Hugs Honey!

It's just lovely to see folk like SpaceAngel (yeah I know - but you'll always be my 'Space Angel' to me! Remember!) and Emma, and Gee, and NVG & my own Li'l sis, MsB... some of you I talk with all the time, but there's so many of you I miss!

I agree with what's been said about bullying, BTW... I was bullied ("gee, really? You mean you were the weird kid who marched to the beat of your own drum, Magda? That sounds so unlikely... NOT!") Intelectually I knew it was their problem and not mine, and I used to try very hard to not let them see how much it hurt me... but I think the scars are still there at times. I later realised that I was bullied by one of my teachers, though I don't remember properly being aware of it at the time... it's hard to stand up to someone who sends you out of the room, then tells the rest of the class that if they want to be my friend they will get the same treatment I do from her... There are still days when I wonder what I would say to that teacher if I saw her today... I probably would ask her if her life is happier now? I would tell her I pity her for being so weak as to have to bully a 10 year old who trusted her and looked up to her. I would tell her that no matter how bad things get in her life, it is nothing compared to the complete helplessness of a 10 year old who can't seem to make friends and is miserable and lonely and doesn't even realise that she is the victim of bullying.

Then I would look her in the eye and tell her, with complete honesty, that I forgive her. I do, because it says more about how she felt complete lack of control of her life at the time than what it said about me!

I am stronger than that!

But no, I wouldn't go back to those days for all the money in the world!

Goodnight all! Love you and will keep popping in here as I am able!

I totally take your point, and will stop feeling jelouse immediately. Okay so the taunts and occasional beatings did smart (the event that lasts most in my memory is when a group of girls cordinated 100plus students to vacate the playground when I came out the door because I was 'contagious'. What a waste of their time and energy!), but I've come to realise that there are far worse things in life and you have to forget the little stuff.
I have only just realised how sheltered I have been all my life. Some of the stuff I hear about the kids I teach, well it makes my childhood look rosey!
Sorry you have bad memories Zeek & Magda. I think I took us down a gloomy path. Maybe I could lighten the mood by asking what everyone's happiest memory is, either from childhood or more recently (perhaps this latter would apply to the sickeningly happy MsB & NVG!)

Good night hugs to Magda and MsB!

Don't you dare! I needs me my vicarous smoochies! I just like to tease! Now go get that hamburger. That's an order.

Hi Miike! Nice to meet you! You'll be very happy here. Once you enter this asylum, you never want to leave, trust me.

Hi Miike:) Welcome and it's good to have you here.

Odds- hey starving student is a grand tradition... you have to have those stories for later. " when I was in school..."
Yup living arrangements changed for the better in a big way. As em pointed out I am obnoxiously happy.

Mind you right now I'd be even happier if I had a burger and fries....LOL

Em I'm waiting for NV to get home so we can decide on dinner... I am voting hamburger...giggle Seriously Jim has got to stop with the excellent mouth watering descriptions.. makes me crave whatever he's describing. J.D. Robb is worse though

It's a fine tradition indeed, it fills me with pride to be part of such a prestigious institution! but...it's such a CLICHÉ! Ahhh, few situations in this life are not improved by the addition of food! Could go for some noodles myself about now ^^

I don't know, a little more patience eating my sandwich would've meant I didn't bite my lip quite so damn hard!

On the subject of writers and food - bloke called Frank Tallis. His main character is a psychiatrist in turn of the century Vienna - the description of the cakes in the books makes you climb the walls with greed. Impossible to read without doughnuts etc to hand. (But really good on odd Freudian crime...)

odds - a good cookbook, if you have a limited kitchen/budget/skillset etc is Nigel Slater's 'Real Fast Food'
