I am inclined to agree with your anthropomorphic Firefly characterizations, except that a weasel lacks Jayne's intimidating physical presence. I submit that Jayne would, in fact, be a hyena:

TUJIAOZUO

The Captian: A German Shepherd (not the stoic Police Dog/Rin Tin Tin kind, the not entirely purbred, slightly dopey yet noble looking ranchdog that turns into the protector when a new truck pulls up to the farm. Also prone to collaborating with the cat to steal hotdogs when the family's grilling.)

Zoe: Doberman (Sleek, alert, athletic, obedient)

Wash: Yellow Labrador with a dinosaur squeaky toy and a Hawiian bandanna (smart, though incredibly goofy)

Jayne: a constantly drooling Bullmastiff (protective, stubborn, muscled)

Kaylee: A red Australian Shepherd (my friend has one; extremely intelligent, pretty, exuberantly happy, friendly, and a hard worker)

Inara: black and tan Saluki (middle eastern breed extremely elegant)

Book: not entirely sure? A shepherd perhaps (but one that was a police dog, more polished and well bred compared to the ranch GS)

Simon: Wiemaraner (sleek and dignified, intelligent, loyal to the family, fearless when defending, and really not relaxing for 30 seconds)

River: A Siamese cat (big eyes, slightly off if not bi-polar, small yet prone to suddenly going apes**t on larger animals, occasionally cuddly but on it's own terms)

I know I know, dogs and cats....

Your Indian Pirate Lord,
Ash

Jayne doesn't really have the hard core of malice that lies in the heart of every anthropomorphic hyena.

What, wantin' to get hisself an ear doesn't count as hard core malice?

Wantin' to hurt somebody what already shot the girl you'ld really like to be your sweetie does not qualitfy as hard core malice in a general sense no. Jayne hates specific things and will hurt/maim/kill for specific reasons (In a fair fight, gonna start a fair fight, if there's a woman involved, or if he's gettin' paid) but he won't hurt just to hurt (except maybe Simon) which is the defining characteristic here.
