Yup, you read right, we're under a DOS attack and the bots are going nuts trying to inject more bad scripts all over the place.

From what I can tell, they're coming from Egypt, Taiwan, Russia, and Brazil at the moment. Things are going to be rough for a while until all this passes.

In this instance DOS refers to a Denial Of Service attack. Which is what it's called when somebody tries to jam up the server with spurious page requests so legitimate users can't get to the content. SQL is the type of database that the site runs on.

The bots responsible for these attacks inject javascript code into the SQL server so that when a dynamically generated page (like this one) is served up, the javascript runs on the user's browser to to redirect the browser to a website that has more malicious code that attempts to infect the user's computer to either gather data or to propagate itself further.

In order to do this, the bots probe all the site's pages for vulnerabilities. Imagine a lot of computers loading hundreds of pages all at the same time. FFF.NET, being a small site with limited bandwidth, can't handle that type of traffic and eventually stops working.

Since the last attack, I've patched some of the holes, at least the ones I know of, to prevent the injection from working or affecting other people.

However, there's little I can do about the DOS attack. The best I could do was to block a whole segment of the world off, particularly Asia, since it's where most of these attacks come from.

Good grief!!! People do this kind of thing? What the hell for? I can't claim to fully understand this, but however you are doing it, well done for deflecting these guys. Seems like a nightmare! I find it incredible you can keep this site running with such determined 'bots' as you call them trying to attack the site in such large numbers at any given time.

Thanks Haken.

People do it mostly because they can. They create these bots and let it loose mostly for the purpose of phishing (identity theft, credit card fraud, etc.). It's done either by distributing code that'll get on users' computer to collect info or by using the compromised servers to send out phishing spam or to propagate the bots. It's big money for them if it works. Most of the time, though, it just wreck havoc with everyone's websites, servers, and computers.

It's also very easy to do these days because toolkits for this stuff are readily available, and one no longer requires much programming skill, if any at all, to become a mad hacker on the verge of cyber world domination (at least that's the mindset).

If one is into conspiracies, the urban myth (or joke) is that many of these viruses, trojans, and bots are created by anti-virus companies. It's a guarantee moneymaker. Either pay for your antivirus subscription or risk infection. When business is slow, the antivirus companies and security firms release one or several of these things and everyone will come paying. Ah, but I digress.

I see the money/motivation there, and had never heard this take on the virus scan companies.....hummmmmm, interesting.

On the other side of the coin, most of these antivirus and security firms are either founded by people who used to hack/crack/phreak or employ people who used to hack/crack/phreak, which makes perfectly good sense. Who better knows this stuff than those who used to build them.

Oddly enough while I'd never thought of taking it as far as a conspiracy theory I have NEVER installed anti-virus software on my computers. Even the work ones of which we have four connected to the internet, and I'm happy to say we have never had any trouble with a virus. My home computer likewise.

Wether that is just plain luck I don't know. However I do wonder about anti-virus software. It's kind of like the ol' protection racket:

Incredible! I had no idea.... Mind you if everyone hacks everyone then.... eventually there will be no need to hack...?

Anyway thanks for the breakdowns Haken.

It's on the computers at work because that's policy and they can afford the subscription. However, I don't have it installed at home.

It's kind of like practicing safe sex. Don't be tempted if you don't know what's inside the box. And if you gotta have it, then by all means, please get protection.

In other words, don't open any attachment you don't know that will run something on your computer. Joke spams that contain powerpoint presentations are notorious. Not all are bad, but some do contain macros and will infect the unsuspecting.

Don't go to any websites you know will launch 10,000 popups that wants you to install something. I know some of you know what these sites are, and if you don't, then good for you.

Also don't install any software that you don't know about without Googling it first or if you're a BitTorrent user, please read the comments.

As for everyone hacking everyone. It's actually happening, though not on that grand of a scale. There exists competing hacking groups around the world trying to break into each others' countries computer networks and servers. Most are like taggers and are harmless, but some of do have government backing just like in the movies.

I guess as a net user I'm pretty lazy. I don't do any of the things you just mentioned. I'm not a torrent user - I just don't understand how to use it to be honest, I have friends who talk endlessly about this kind of thing and then punctuate the comment with the fact that they're having trouble with their 'motherboard' or it caused some kind of seize-up that resulted in them having to re-format their hardrive. Man that's too much hassle for me.

I view a handful of sites this being my favourite and that's it. Nice and simple.

Hacking competitions eh? Interesting.... Could be a script in there somewheres. Hmmmm

Speaking of War Games, did you see 'War Games: The Dead Code?' It's somewhat of a sequel to the original in that a central figure from the 1983 original makes a return. To be honest, I found the movie more enjoyable than it really should be. Especially if one has a couple of hours to waste.

There is a few good FREE anti virus programs out there. I use AVG and have for several years. It's updated regularly sometimes more than once a day, and I have a scan set for once a day.

I also use the Firefox browser. While not perfect, I think it's better than IE. And I love the cool extensions.

BTW I had a really big crush on Andrew McCarthy. Most girls I knew at that age loved Emilio Estevez but not me.
