I was just thinking the other day about the last show that was my hard-core obsession --one that was cancelled three times-- and I remembered a trivia guru pointing out that the two most important characters (after the main character) had only been on camera together three times in three seasons. Wait, it was the commentary by Nathan Fillion that he was looking forward to working with Alan Tudyk on "War Stories" since they had had very little time working together thus far. Hence, a debatable trivia question to which I myself do not have an answer: Which pair of regular cast members did the fewest number of scenes together and how many was it? The OCD folks can thank me later.

I'd say Wash and River and Jayne and River. Though Jayne and River were on screen a lot for "Ariel", they never actually spoke directly to one another. In fact, And I don't think River and Wash ever actually spoke to each other. Also, I don't think she ever said his name. Of course, she never said a lot of people's names.

I think wash gets left out a lot because he had to stay with the ship or he was busy piloting.

Or avoiding war stories so as not to further strain his marriage. But never fear for Wash, children. He gets to spend a whole lot of time with Zoe. Alan even states this in the DVD, how he interprets his character through his relationship with Zoe.

Oh, I had forgotten about that!

Thinking about it, Wash hardly ever interacted with anyone, just Zoe, Kaylee, and Mal. And Simon mostly hung with River and Kaylee. And Zoe with Mal, Wash, and Jayne. And Jayne with Book, Mal, and Zoe. And Book with Jayne. And River with Simon and Kaylee. And Inara with Mal and Kaylee. Okay, Mal interacted with everyone the most. Poor Book and Wash hardly ever interacted with anyone. :(

Inara watches over River alot. Ever since the moment River came screaming out of the shipping crate, Inara has been there.

Look at the scene in the infirmary when River is sleeping - she's wearing Inara's gold robe. Knowing what we know about River, she knows the *feel* of that robe and knows the concern Inara has for her.

I think that River spends most of her time in her quarters or with Simon, Kaylee or Inara.

One of the themes of the show is that the isolated characters are gradually becoming a family. By having their relationships not solidified yet, the viewer has the pleasure of watching them beginning to interact. If the show had continued, Wash and River would have gradually gotten to know each other.

No, I don't think that Inara and Jayne talked or even stayed in the same room much. Only when there was a meal or a meeting. Somehow, I don't think Inara was overly fond of Jayne.

This whole thing has got me thinking. I think I might go back and rewatch my Firefly DVDs to see who interacted with who.

I think the making of the buddy buddy arm thing there was sorta to make it even more funny when she kicks in the punchline.

Wash's,"Oh it's hideous!" followed by,"Oh and there's something in a jar." Has to be the one line that always makes me make sure I'm not drinking anything when it comes up. I learned this lesson the hard way.

In Out of Gas, Inara and Jayne actually have a rather lengthy conversation while Mal is waking up, but it's all in the background. Inara is wanting to clean up all the blood Mal dripped all over the ship, and Jayne doesn't think it matters.

Inara and Wash have a radio conversation in Serenity, and there's also Shindig, where she comes in to see if the landlock has been taken off. Plus in...er...Ariel...there's the whole "Can I use companion as a verb?" thing, although Wash is kinda talking to the room at large.

As to River and Jayne, other than the butcher knife, the first one that comes to mind is "Jayne is a girl's name." She says that directly to Jayne, and his "Well, Jayne ain't a girl!" is directly to River, although the rest of the sentence is to Simon.
Oh, yeah, and she does steal his bread. Does that one count?

I think it may be Book and Wash. I can't think of any scene right now with just those two,but it is pretty late, so forgive me if there's something totally obvious I forgot.

Wow, I completely missed that Inara/Jayne conversation in Out of Gas - didn't notice it at all. I guess my "punishment" will be to go watch that episode again. Yay!

I still have that question about interactions that happened in the deleted scenes - like the Zoe/Simon one deleted from Serenity. My vote is that we assume that those things happened even though they weren't included in the episode. What do ya'll think?

I could be misremembering, but I think Inara was going to watch over River, but went to her room only to find River already gone. So no direct interaction there, but the set up does give the idea that the two of them would be comfortable together--suggesting interactions offscreen.

Off the top of my head, I can't recall Inara interacting directly (other than all around the dinner table) with either Wash or Zoe. But I could be forgetting something...

actually, in bushwhacked, river starts to scream and inara goes over to comfort her (i think!). they did not talk directly, though. the only interaction between zoe and inara i can think of is in trash when they are setting up saffron. i cannot think of any time that wash and inara talked directly or had any scenes with just them. of course, they did talk in serenity (over the radio) when inara is getting ready to return to the ship after her appointments are done. wash mentions that they are in a hurry.

Yes, I've been thinking of having it straightened or at least highlighted, but I'm not sure what the current fashion is. ;)

Actually, as part of my Top Secret clearance processing, many moons ago, my analyzing psychologist rendered the following verdict: "You have a deep and rich internal landscape". I guess he meant that as good thing...

Let's just say that my 'stream of consciousness' has a lot of whirlpools in it.
