If Firefly lasted 7 seasons, would it have remained brilliant?

We will never know, but I feel much Like Buffy, it would eventually(each season getting progressively lesser storylines)become slightly above average.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

Every Buffy and Angel fan has their own opinion about the quality of the various seasons, but most agree that seasons two and three of each were exceptional, and I have no doubt that would have been the case with Firefly too. However, that does not mean there are not fans of any particular season for various reasons. Either of the three shows would have grown stale if the character dynamics had remained the same throughout, so it was inevitable for there to be cast additions and deletions over the years.

In the case of Firefly things may have played out similarly to the way they did in the BDM, or perhaps a bit differently. There is no way I will ever believe it would not have been a great show through at least five seasons if not more. That is the most tragic thing about its cancellation, thinking about all of that unrealized potential.

We had 14 TV episodes of Firefly (including the pilot), and that small pool of material has provided an amazing range of great moments, great lines, and unanswered questions, fuelling an ever-growing legion of Browncoats.

Imagining the wealth of additional such material which might have come from a fully-realized multi-season series makes my heart ache. However...

Much as we all generally love the Firefly we got to see, more episodes would have meant more chances for us to be less satisfied with some of it. Inevitably, any large body of work is going to have its flaws, real or perceived. I believe Firefly would have remained a well-loved series, but elements would have inevitably crept in which would have bothered some viewers (such as the inevitable character body count, for which Joss is rightly infamous), as well as general "series sag," the result of long-term stresses on the setting and characters.

So, yes, it would've been immensely satisfying to see Firefly develop according to whatever vision Joss had in mind for it, but that vision may well have deviated from our expectations, and become something somewhat different from what it was when it began, when we all fell in love with it.

Yes, it would have remained brilliant. Even the WORST Buffy/Angel episodes are quite a bit above the norm for television - not just above the norm for their time, but even today they stand up pretty damned well.

Would EVERY episode and season of Firefly have retained the exceptional standards we're accustomed to from the few episodes we were given? Probably not; there would probably have been a few clunkers in there. Even so, a clunker from Joss beats an Emmy winner from just about anyone else!

I second that...

I'll also add that I think Joss learned a lot from Buffy and Angel. (He's been known to say this on occasion, and give examples, though I can't recall where.) Compare the first 14 of Buffy to the first 14 of Angel to the first 14 of Firefly - no question he was getting better and better! And I think he wasn't just getting better at making single episodes, but at setting up whole series long plots.

By which I mean, I'm sure not all the seven seasons would have pleased everyone, and certainly episodes here and there would have been iffy relative to the rest, but as a whole it would have absolutely rocked. Beyond brilliant. It would have left both Buffy and Angel in the dust, (no vampire pun intended ) and that's saying a lot because I love those shows!

Your right, but both had seasons most fans didn't care for.

I think It may very well have been good even after 7 seasons...possibly seasons 5/6 may have been a bit tedious as is often the case with long running series...but I think Joss and co would have found ways to revive it. Look at Mash and Red Dwarf and Barney Miller...they had a few lull periods but I still loved em at the end.

I agree with Mal4Prez in general. It's inevitable that a long-running series will lose some of it's original flavor and zest for life. But overall the body of work by Joss & company would prove to be nothing short of great.

I still believe that this can come true with any "brains" on the part of Universal execs. Our numbers have grown of late and it doesn't make sense for them to ignore a ready-made fan base.

Shiny! Let's be bad guys!

If it makes sense, I'm sure the general quality would have remained high, but I would have stopped enjoying it.

That always happens to me with Joss' shows, and for me the set-up of the 14 episodes of the series was so brilliant, it could only end up disappointing me by making certain plot decisions down the line that would spoil the things I love about the show. Joss has tendencies in his character development that I am not fond of - which I suspect he just didn't have time to work into the show before it was cancelled.

The movie certainly did disappoint me.

So, paradox, it would have been brilliant still but I would have stopped following and being a fan very probably.

The answer is yes.
Buffy and Angel fans still get their USRDA even after many seasons. Firefly would have still given us our fix.
