Frank Miller Going to Space with Buck Rogers
DateSaturday, October 25, 2008 at 8:00PM
A while back, it looked like comic book guru turned movie director Frank Miller had his eye on Buck Rogers, and then there was a lot of silence on the line. Miller has been working on The Spirit, and there's constant talk of Sin City and 300 spin-offs, and the Buck Rogers talk died down.

But IGN has checked with Miller's camp following an announcement made at the Scream Awards about a classic sci-fi hero he wanted to focus on next, and it turns out that apparently it is Buck Rogers that's on the director's radar.

The idea will be based mostly on the Flint Dille graphic novel from the 1990s, but will retain the campy attitude (and dazzling production details) of the NBC show that aired in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Therefore, a $40 million budget is just about right.

Back when we discussed this movie in May, we had some definite casting in mind:

"If only Gil Gerard had really fallen into a coma back in the late 70s after being exposed to some kind of gas, then we could resuscitate him now. That'd be killer. Obviously, my mind turns immediately to Bruce Campbell or Nathan Fillion. I doubt Fillion would want to get into another spaceship at this point, but you never know.

"As for the women, you have some flexibility. The budget restraints mean some of the big names are out of the question, but since I just mentioned Nathan Fillion, what about his Slither co-star, the lovely Elizabeth Banks as Col. Wilma Deering and for the hell of it, Fillion's Firefly filly Morena Baccarin as Ardala?"

We'll see where Miller's head is on all of this when he finally does make the official announcement.

Lets party like its 1939

Put me down in favor of the 'flexible' women...

It's really not much of a leap from 'Adria' to Ardala...Ummm , Tasty !

...And , if Nate doesn't want to mount up for spacecraft duty again , or the Turnipy-odour just won't wash off , we could get Joe Flanigan...

Frank's done well for himself... Not bad for a artist geek growing up in Berlin Vermont. I really didn't know Frank all that well but I hung around with his little Brother Richard growing up. Their house was about a mile and a half from mine. Almost next door neighbors around here....

I recall meeting his sister, a nurse, in Portland, Maine when I was an intern. She found it odd that I, a physician, was such a big fan of her strange little brother who does "comic books."

Respectfully,

This whole statement makes me all a-flutter.
But why would he thing Fillion doesn't want to get back in a spaceship? And that's not a rhetorical question -- I'm genuinely curious.

I'm not sure how I'd feel about watching Nathan & Morena in a campy production. Firefly never felt campy to me (except a few rare moments). Humorous, but not campy.
Then again, Nathan played Captain Hammer (corporate tool!) perfectly. So maybe he does have cheez in his veins.
I guess what I'm saying is -- I'm torn. But when it comes down to it, if either one were cast in the show, I'd watch it as faithfully as I possibly could.

Frank Miller, Nathan, Morena and Elizabeth? I'm near the point of squeeing like a pre-pubescent fangirl, honestly.

Regardless it would be camp, I can see all three of them rocking the camp as well as rocking the space age outfits. I hope said three are flattered to be mentioned, because we're talking about Frank !@#%&$! Miller that dropped their names. The man has risen from comic books to become the visionary behind some of the most talked about films of the industry.

Wow... just.... woooow......

I just realized I was drooling at the thought of more people seeing Nathan, Morena in more space action, then learning about some Serenity and converting to browncoats.

I'm all for it, hope Nathan is.

Frank Miller didn't actually say those remarks. Those particular casting comments were actually made by the person who wrote the blog entry.

Might just figure that Nathans new show Castle will take off and he'll be too big a name.

I clicked on the link above the quotation block, and I have to agree with SimonF's interpretation.

The block quotations made it look like he was quoting Frank Miller, when "we discussed this movie in May." But the "we" is not an interview with Frank Miller; the "we" was the bloggers talking back in May. The quotation is from a previous blog.

So unfortunately, the way I read it, we have no idea if Frank Miller is a Firefly fan. We can probably assume the bloggers seem to be.

Oh, I hope they do a good job with this because if this ends up like the Brady movie, well... I may be moved to violence.

Waddya think? Gil Gerard makes a cameo as Cmdr. Gordon, like Buster Crabbe did in the 70's show?

I like Bruce Campbell but I think Nathan should stay true to Capt. Mal. How about Denis Quaid? Too old? How about Alan or Adam, for that matter?

Love the female casts suggested so far!!

I look forward to hearing more about this.

That's a relief. Now I don't have to grudgingly give Frank a break over "Fillion's Firefly filly"...

I'm as ardent an admirer of assonance as the next a##hole, but hey - waddaya?!

It was like that when we got here!
