I pick up my new Full HDTV (1080p LCD) tomorrow, will be followed very shortly by a PS3. I never intended to buy either of these things..standard definition and DVD seems fine to me but once I saw Firefly(Blu-Ray) in a shop I just knew I had to have it!

Anyone else have Firefly Blu-Ray and watch on full HD TV? Is it good??? please say yes..

SHINYGOODGUY

Truth be told I didn't see too much difference except the ocassional shot of Serenity flying through space.

I haven't seen all the episodes yet, been watching the extras, but it does look somewhat sharper. My guess is that the way Joss shot the series and the BDM, with "flares" and the like, that it was meant to have a certain look about it.

I was watching "Trash" the other night and noticed that you could count the leaves on the bush in the opening shot of Mal naked on the rock.
Thats pretty awesome in itself. But the interior shots of the ship are somewhat dark and doesn't help the hi-def quality much.

What I found particularly shiny was the menu navigating. Really shiny stuff. The extras are also shiny. But I've found that veiwing Blu-ray movies on the PS3 system is absolutely shiny-awesome, most notable is the sound - in a word Wow!

One word of advice when watching Blu-ray movies, do not customize your settings for playback. I will refresh my memory later today as to the term used on the TV set, but it allows the set to adjust to the format in the movie and provides the best picture quality. I will post the term later. Perhaps it would be a good idea to speak to the stores' expert within the telvision department to give you some pointers.

I've learned some things through trial and error.
But watching B-R movies on the PS3 is awesome no matter what. You can also watch your existing DVDs on the system and it gives the movies a little boost, or updgrade, as you watch.

Saw The Dark Knight last night - Wow. Such clarity and sound that competes with the best theatre sound. And this from the TV set's factory-installed speakers, imagine if you have a hi-def sound system. All I can say is you will definitely notice the much-sharper detail in the B-R movies.

Kinda disappointed in that response Shinygoodguy, still, I suppose any slight gain in quality will only add to the firefly experience. Hows about Serenity? is it out on blu-ray yet?

Heya Shinygoodguy, have you played around with watching videos off your pc through the PS3?? Wondering how well it will perform in that regard. For instance can you play m2ts files stored on your pc through the PS3?

I've actually seen more of a difference than ShinyGoodGuy. Probably because I rarely see non-HD movies any more. As in, the switch back to standard def (most of the channels I get) is rather shocking compared to HD (movies or TV).

But, I wouldn't say that DVD get a boost from the PS3. Rather that there is more information in the DVD than a standard def TV can handle. In other words, the quality gets fuzzed out a bit by the inherent lack of quality of the SD TV. It's just that the HDTV is able to actually display all that quality. So, it is hidden no more.

Quite frankly, I don't see myself being able to go back to SD. HD is just too much better.

EDIT:

@Calhoun:

The PS3 can handle a variety of file formats including HD (MP4 container). I don't have the link handy, but there is a list somewhere. I think it is reproduced on the PS3's multimedia wikipedia page as well. 'Tis a handy machine!

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I got my PS3 a few days ago and have just watched the pilot "Serenity" so far, but I only have a 720p set at the moment. Hope to get a 1080 before the end of the year.

Tell you what, throw inthe SDVD of Firefly on your new tv. Then watch the Blu-Ray. In my opinion(and many others) it is night and day. You will love the Blu-Ray I think.

On my Toshiba, the setting is called "native" and automatically shows the movie in the best format (widescreen, square box).

Saw The Dark Knight with factory installed speakers too. and it was soooo good. Ironman is worth it too in Blu-Ray.

BTW if Blu-Ray DVDs are a bit too pricey, Netflix has started renting them, There is a small surcharge though, but worth not having to buy $28 DVDs all the time to get the Blu-Ray quality.

I know, I know. But the set I've had my eye on is currently out of stock at my Best Buy. Might have to drive thirty miles to the next nearest store this weekend.
