Someone please help me.

For most of last month, I had the gorram Fruity Oaty Bar jingle running through my head like a chinchilla on crack. Whistleing it at work, humming it in the shower, randomly singing lines under my breath, it was horrible! In an effort to purge this homicidal-pavlovian-response-inducing jingle from my skull, I watched a few episodes of the show. For the rest of the week, people were wondering why the Crazy Park Ranger was singing "take me out, to the black," then pounding the side of his head and swearing.

Thinking that maybe the best way to cure myself of the audial parasite was repeated exposure to said parasite, I watched a few more episodes, one of which was, you guessed it, Jaynestown. Next day, I was singing the praises of the Hero of Canton. Constantly. Finally, after 3 days of lunacy, I was able to extricate the Hero of Canton from my mental stereo that's stuck on "Repeat".

Whereupon, I foolishly, and with utter disregard for the very clear title of the show and it's likely consequences, sat down and watched Dr Horrible's Sing Along Blog. Christ in a gimme cap. I wouldn't mind if it was the freeze ray song, or the nifty "you're gonna die" bit a few segments in. Those I could live with.

But no. My brain, out sheer spite, has chosen to latch onto the Bad Horse Application Receipt Notice like a pit bull onto a postman.

Why does Joss torture me like this? Are there other Whedon shows that I can watch without being ambushed by earworms? Buffy, perhaps?

Is there some cure for this? Some way to find peace and quiet inside my own head? Some way to evict these sanity-sucking parasites? 'Cause right now I'm looking at a Black and Decker drill with an auger bit, but I think that might be overkill.

Mercy is the mark of a great man.
Guess I'm just a good man.
Well, I'm alright.

Well, the only way I've found to get a song out of your head is to listen to another sticky song... I'm sorry :[

Eeeeeeeeek.
Gonna be a trifle difficult clearing my
tiny mind of that flan image. May look
all Saturn-y but me see, me taste. Ah,
the sweetness and the custardy light
blending into the caramel...........

Sing Happy Birthday to yourself,
or one of the Godfather themes.

Nope. "A man's Gotta do what a Man's Gotta Do" (including NPH's-"Balls") has been stuck in my head since I got the DVD.

It wouldn't be bad but I'm female and it's slightly weird with it running about my head.

Sorry but I was laughing all the way through reading your post - Is that mean of me? ...it's just you seemed to fall into every trap... There's a part of me that wants to suggest you watch Once more with Feeling - Buffy season 6, to purge your musical merry-go-round, but that may compound your problem and you may think me truly evil.

STINKINGROSE

I find that in order to get a song out of my head I have to hunt it down and LEARN it. (It's what they really want, ultimately.)I can then sing it once through and it goes away.

For instance, I have FINALLY tracked down a song I heard once seven years ago. All I had was the name of the performer. I had gone to the length of hitting an online music vendor site and listening to each and every 15 seconds worth of song on each and every album they had available by her. No dice.
Last week I wandered into a store which has some CDs, but is primarily devoted to other stuff. They had music playing overhead. I decided to ask a clerk in hopes that maybe someone there would have heard of it. (Trust me, it made sense in this store..)
The clerk pointed me to the register minder, who then advised me that they only had the one CD by the artist, and it turned out that the pages of the insert had gotten wet and were all stuck together so I couldn't flip through to find the words. She put the disc in. It was THE FIRST SONG ON THE DISC. She kindly offered to do something illegal, but I declined. She then offered to sell me the disc at half off. I decided that since the chorus was in a language I am not familiar with it would be best if I just gave my money to the artist instead and got a new(ish) one, but thanks.

In less than a week I will finally have "Dreams" off of Joanne Shenandoah's "Eagle Cries" album OUT of my HEAD. (It's a very nice song, mind.)

Can you believe that either nobody had that CD available online, or the drums at the beginning are over 15 seconds long?

I'm almost ready to sigh with relief.

Of course as soon as that one's out, something else will fill the gap.

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

I have the very same solution, to learn the song. Songs get stuck on repeat because I can't remember just how they go, so I sing one bit over and over without being able to get past it.
Buffy is not entirely safe (yeah, watch Once More, With Feeling and wait for your head to explode with all the different lines running through it) but for the most part is music-free apart from the theme and background tracks, which are lyric-free (and not composed by Joss) so that might be a way to go. Angel might also be good, as most music on that show is sung by tone-deaf demons. Most. I think.

I suppose that if I have to wander the Earth with music stuck in my head, Firefly music ain't really so bad.

Hell, I could've watched "Mama Mia!"

No, Lorne isn't tone-deaf at all, but only on occasion are we blessed with his green velvet tones. And from what I remember, most of the songs are oldies, well-known and not written by Joss, so they might not cause that earworm problem.
