Hey all you Browncoats, I'm new to the forum but now is not the time for introductions.

A major threat has come to the NASA space station naming contests. i know that Serenity has about 86% of the vote currently but that might not last.

Tonight, March 3, 2009, Stephen Colbert of the Colbert Report, asked the people of Colbertnation to cast their votes to name the station "Colbert"

Don't get me wrong, i love Stephen Colbert, but i want to see Serenity's name up there in space more than his. however, Colbert has a track record of getting his fans to name random things named after himself. some examples being a bridge, a spider, a sea turtle, even an eagle.

so i urge all you browncoats, keep casting your votes for Serenity.

if we can beat Colbert, that DEFINITELY makes us mighty.

That is great news actually because that is just one more choice for our competitors to dilute themselves on.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

If I was going to name anything in honor of anyone on Comedy Central it would have to be CARTMAN.

Colbert is now listed as other top choices, but does not show a % of votes cast. I'm guessing that NASA only wants to name it one of the top 4 listed and has a other box to see what comes up.
Thank you for the heads up though. I will make sure to vote every day now just in case.

how can you vote every day when it only allows you to vote once?

also, can anyone answer this question plz: whenever i go to the nasa site to see how serenity's doing, all i get is a list of the top ten nominations, and no percentages of the actual vote...serenity's not even on the list, nor are the other names that actually had a percentage vote in the poll. what gives?

I have lots of work computers at my disposal. I also go vote when I have access to a friends computer. There are ways around these things. I do so wish Serenity to be the winner.

you can vote once a day from one computer, and i don't know about the percentages of the other names it only shows them for the 4 options nasa originally listed.

even though Colbert is at the top of the list, hopefully the people at nasa are more browncoat than stephen colbert fans. because if you read the rules it says that nasa doesn't have to go with whatever name actually wins the contests, in the end it's up to them.

I'm hoping NASA supports Firefly more. That's the part of the rules that encourages me in a time where hope wavers. As I've written elsewhere, Firefly DVDs were on the station before Colbert's DNA was... An astronaut left them on the station as a perpetual entertainment option for the inhabitants.

If you can't see the percentages of the 4 provided options, then the poll's temporarily malfunctioning. Give it a few minutes and you'll be able to see the actual percentage, though clearly they don't factor in the 10,000+ new votes for Colbert since his show aired last night.

The voting counter resets at approximately midnight CST (-06:00 GMT) since that's probably where the site is based (Huntsville). And yes, we can vote daily on it. (I do not intend for that to sound like Obama's slogan, but if it works, it works)

I just checked and the percentages for the top four are displayed for me, with Serenity still at 86%.

I believe that Serenity is the perfect name considering that Node 1 is Unity and Node 2 is Harmony. Colbert would definitely clash with those.

I would't worry too much about them naming Node 3 "Colbert" If you look at the contest rules they state

"NASA will take into consideration the results of the voting. However, the results are not binding on NASA and NASA reserves the right to ultimately select a name in accordance with the best interests of the agency, its needs, and other considerations. Such name may not necessarily be one which is on the list of voted-on candidate names. NASA’s decision shall be deemed final."

Rest easy and keep voting.

Still at 86% I just voted....but I'd hate to have to kneecap Colbert...but I would!!!

Colbert is only a top suggested name, I get the feeling that he was too late offering the suggestion to make it into the final round.
