I find myself liking "The Message" more and more. The ending is truly one of the most touching I think I've ever seen. I bring this up because at this stage in my life, I find an odd connection to Tracey.

He's a man on the run. Just trying to get home after a bunch of wasted or misused opportunities. He says he just couldn't get anything in his life to work out right after the war. This is by no means an indication that I fought in any war or was even in the military. Far from it and I certainly salute all who have served their countries so valiantly. But I just can't seem to get my life to work out right sometimes and I can't help but truly feel some sort of bond Tracey.

Just another testament to Joss' writing potentialities, I suppose.

Does anyone else find these kind of "connections" with other minor characters?

Zoe: "Get it running again."
Mal: "Yeah"
Zoe: "So not running now"
Mal: "Not so much"
- Out of Gas

It has struck me how well Joss does flesh out even his minor characters.

I've never had a personal connection to one, but I could always admire the complexity he put into them. Even the cliche'd ones kind of mocked or bucked their cliche a little.

I know what you mean - I'm surely a lot more Tracey than I am Mal.

Though I sometimes think Tracey should get to come back just long enough to stick something up Mal's ass for getting him killed.

It was like that when we got here!

Well, unfortunately Tracey was volatile and had to be taken care of for the good of Mal and the crew. With the rogue police on their way . . . Mal couldn't risk any more loose cannons to make things go any more awry than they already had. Tracey got them in a heap of trouble and had to be taken care of.

Zoe: "Get it running again."
Mal: "Yeah"
Zoe: "So not running now"
Mal: "Not so much"
- Out of Gas

Well, and if Tracey hadn't just assumed Mal and crew were about to turn him in...

For someone who said he chose Mal and Zoe specifically because they were "suckers" who'd be taken in by his story and shelter him just because of their history, he really didn't read them very well.

But then again, Mal and Zoe don't seem to really vocalize their plans, like in Bushwhacked, when Simon had the same misunderstanding. I guess on that crew, River's not the only person who's had to become a bit of a mind reader.

That's the crux of my thing, right there. Sure, Tracey was a loose cannon and the situation had to be resolved, but with just 15 seconds' explanation on Mal's part (well, maybe 120 seconds, given it's the excitable Tracey he's explaining it to), it might have been resolved without Tracey gettin' all corpsified and such.

Though that bullet had been following him for awhile...
