Ok, i have seen quite a few threads about what people do not want to see in Serenity, and one or two comments about what Hollywood does whenever a good film wanders by (ie. make it bad), but i'm curious as to what you all would actually like to see. this is a pretty open question for a reason, since i know not everyone watches Firefly for the same reasons i do.

so speak up. I'll share first. I want to know more about the war that Mal and Zoe met up in. i'd just kind of like some history on what transpired to start an inter-galactic conflict of that proportion.

ok, you talk now.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

What I would like to see:

- more backstory on Mal & Zoe in the War.

- how did Mal & Zoe meet? Was it during or before the War?

- Mal admit his feelings for Inara?

- Mal & Inara kiss!

- Simon admit his feelings for Kaylee.

- light shed on Book's mysterious past.

- What was done to River & why?

- Why did Inara leave the guildhouse & join the
crew of Serenity?

- Jayne firing lots of big guns!

"May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one."

This may sound sarcastic, but it's not meant this way. Just rent The Civil War by Ken Burns. Joss did a pretty good job of recreating the "War Between the States" as long as you leave out slavery.
Or do you?
We know that slavery exists in the 'verse. but is it legal?
Badger trades in slaves, and Mal thought Simon was going to sell River when she was found in the box, but did anyone mention it as being illegal?
A number of Confederate soldiers fought not for slavery but for the issue of states rights, and that sounds more like Mal, Zoey & Wash.
By the way, I'm not a Cracker, I'm a carpetbagging Yankee.
P.S. I'm sorry I got off topic.
When faced with a moral question I ask myself; "What would The Lone Ranger do?"

Being a die hard Confederate, and a history buff to boot, I am going to point out that more than a "number" of Confederates fought for independence & states rights. Less than 6% of the households in the South had slaves. Of the number, less than 25% of slave owners fought in the Confederate ranks. Therefore I think it is safe to say that the majority of Confederates fought for independence, states rights, and to keep an armed invading army from stomping through their state.

Sorry if by "a number" I implied something. What I meant was a large number if not most, no offense meant.
I am still wondering about if slavery in the Firefly universe is legal or not.

Well from what I have seen on Firefly I think that Slavery is illegal but Indentured Servitude is. Inara said that Mal was her "Indentured Man" in TTJ but the times we see or hear about actual Slaves it from low lifes (assuming that that woman Badger was looking over was a slave and the Slavers in Shindig looked like low lifes).

Of course the Alliance is corrupt so a few officials may turn a blind eye to some slavery.

Tjack et al:

Yeah, slavery is legal in the 'verse. They may call it 'indentured servitude' but it's the same thing. Inara, in addition to being a high-priced bit of dainty for nabobs and moguls, also represents the Guild, which is perhaps the most respected symbol of societal conformity in the 'verse.

In TTJ, she saunters into the sheriff's office and declares Mal is her "indentured man" with years to go, and then states that she'll add six months to his term of indenture for escaping. Quite apart from the actions and conversations we hear in other episodes that are at least suggestive of slave trading, indentured servitude is very much a thriving means of getting labor in the Core. In "Shindig" the three snotty girls at the ball laugh that Kaylee's 'girl' can't make a proper gown, and are then rebuffed by the gentleman who comments it must've taken a dozen slaves a dozen days to get the ringleader into her prom dress, just so she can shuck out of it the first time a fellow high school senior winks at her. So, yeah, there's slavery alright, although it appears to be a feature of Alliance society (parallel to Civil War North) in Firefly...

BTW, Browncoat1, regarding your wish list for Serenity plot points, I've got one word: Ditto.

Respectfully,

zoid

I've actually wondered if we were headed somewhere (story line wise) with the slavery angle in Firefly, because Shindig mentions it in three separate scenes:

Mal, in the pool hall, "Labor, you mean, ah, slaves." (And again to Inara, in that scene, with a reference to the "sweat of their slave-trading brows.")

The gentleman at the party: "It must have taken a dozen slaves a dozen days to get you into that getup." (And it's got to be legal if people in that situation are talking about it openly.)

Mal, to Inara: "You think following the rules will buy you a nice life, even if the rules make you a slave."

That's an awful lot of casual references for it not to be a plot point later. Add in the references to indentured servitude (in The Train Job and again in Jaynestown) and I think this was all headed somewhere.

As for what I want to see in the movie . . . . hmmm. I leave the plot to the powers that be (aka Joss). Let's just say I wouldn't mind seeing Nathan, Sean, and/or Adam with his (their?) shirt(s) off.

No doubt slavery will be an issue (what makes better heroics than rescuing slaves especially to piss off Niska while evading Reavers) but I would like to point out an earlier part of this discussion: the fact that we do know roughly what was done to River, especially if you are Sci-Fi oriented in a major way.
Quite simply, some black-ops section of the Alliance Government took the most intuitive person they could find (and presumably others besides River, but we do not know for sure), and, in a rather crude manner, produced a psionic person...or, in other words, a full-spectrum receptive telepath and empath. This is supported by River knowing things throughout the series, and especially in "Objects in Space". This is also why the Alliance wants her back so badly; after all, judging by "War Stories", not only is River intuitive in all peaceful endeavors, but she has obviously been given what little asassain training she needs to become a master of it, which makes sense, since the Alliance would be the kind of scumbags to do such a thing to such a precious human, just to create and unmatchable killing machine...

What, I can't have layers?

Woman cannot live by "brainy-analyzation" alone, she must have shirtless men as well. And aren't you hoping that at least one of them will take his shirt off?

Yeah, "tramp" about cover it.

Ah, but we've seen Simon shirtless. So I'd have to pick Jayne, for the novelty aspect. And the muscularity, too. But I certainly wouldn't complain if Simon shows up shirtless.

As for Zoid, I say we treat his rude interruption of our-so-scholarly discussion of Firefly Beefcake with icy stares and dignified silence.

I have just one word for Serenity: Book.

If there's some Book exploration, I'm a happy bunny. Of course, if there's a script written and shot by Joss Whedon, I'm pretty much all smiles and whatnot.

I can't see slavery being a huge thing, myself. There might be an episode - sorry, a film (damn you, FOX, dam you all the way to Hades!) that has slavery drifting about it's core but, like I say, I don't think it's going to be a Thing.

But I have no idea, do I?

As for shirtlessness, all the blokes save Book have had their shirt off (or, in Wash's case, open). I think we should definitely have some ladylike shirtlessness (that should be blouselessness of course, but it hasn't the same ring...). Of course, it would only work with Saffron; alas, shirtlessness would pretty much wreck the other characters for us. In my opinion, at least.

Hey folks.

Umm I'm happy with some Simon/Kaylee development.
Obviously some River "what the heck happened"
Of course Book finding-out-about-his-past type stuff.
Mal and Inara I'm not overly fussed about but hey, its all a rich tapestry, let's chuck them in too!!!

Nah you know what, I can't choose, just want it all to happen, and yet, I don't want it to end! I guess I'm just hoping there's more after Serenity, so I guess not everything can happen.

I was writing one just like this, but I found this post again, so I'll go here.

I would like to see some kind of Alliance Super Cruiser. Something that would make the Dortmunder look like an endtable or something.

I want to know why Jayne seems to only get along with Book, and what Mal did to gain Jayne's respect.

If River is so damn gifted, and can kill people with her brain, why is she so afraid of the Blue Hand people? I mean besides the obvious answer that they're creepy?

Given that this is a Joss Whedon movie...Will someone turn traitor?...Who? (If this does happen...I don't think it will be Jayne)

Will Wash and Zoe stayed married in the face of their obvious marital troubles?

What was Tim Minear and David Solomon talking about in the commentary for "Out of Gas" in reference to Simon and Inara?

Book, damn it! What about Book? And, I think the answer "He was once a high ranking Alliance figure" would be a total cop out.

I know they're talking darker Mal for the movie, but, does he have to be all that dark?

You know...I'm sorry, but, this seems to be a list of questions I want answered, and not a wish list for the movie. I apologize.

And, PS...I would like to see another Firefly class ship, but not the same color as Serenity...something maybe in a bronze or brass kind of thing. But, seeing two of those ships in the same frame would be a hoot.

"You would've lied anyway..."
