This is this person second Amazon Review.

Quote:

Firefly, The Hindenburg Of Television June 1, 2004
I'm just plain tired of reading 5-star reviews from the maybe 1000 Firefly fans that actually exist. Someone has got to get things strait before too many innocent customers fall into a trap, courtesy of The Joss Whedon Fan Club.
Let me start off with the premise and back-story for the show: A bunch of Rebels resiting an evil, domineering entity a.k.a., The Alliance. Hmm, nope, never heard of anything like that before. How about this: the captain figure in the show is a swaggering, fast-talking, shoot-first-ask questions-later kinda guy. Nope, sounds like a completely fresh and original character to me.

The acting and dialogue in this show leave somthing to be desired. For some reason, the characters can't seem to carry on a normal human conversation. Instead, they use little puns that are supposed to make the audience laugh but left me feeling sick like the way people get when they hear a bad joke.

After all, that's what the series amounted to, a bad joke.

This is her first review.

An Insult to Science Fiction Television! May 8, 2004
I bought the series on DVD after being reccomended it by a Sci-Fi geek friend of mine, and I regretted doing so after watching about two episodes. I found that for the most part the plots were worthless, the dialogue was dull and unoriginal, the characters were flat and stereotype, and much of the material was totally unaccepptable for science-fiction television, that is to say, most of the material in Firefly material belongs in a lousy reality T.V. show, not Sci-Fi! Please, do not purchase this show! A far better alternative is Star Trek: The Next Generation, which delves into some real awsome subject matter and explores issues in a way Firefly could never hope to.

Now my question is, why is she still reading the reviews if she hated the show so much and from what I can tell and have seen most people who find Firefly fall in love with? She and a very few others actually hate it. Why can't she accept that?

Oh, and play Cantr II at www.cantr.net.

This is also a call to anyone who hasn't posted a review on Amazon.com for Firefly yet to do so. Another thing to do if you know friends who haven't posted a reviews yet and like Firefly then get them to do so as well. Get that person buried and we prove her point wrong.

Oh, and play Cantr II at www.cantr.net.

RLK,

My friend purchased it at my insistence. He said to me today, "It was ok! I didn't hate it. It was cheesy and the fight scenes could have been choreographed better, but it was ok."

Bad news for him, but good news for me, because he is giving me his DVD set! Yay!

Important people don't do field work.

While I accept that everyone is entitled to their opinion, I'll never understand why people who didn't like something will try to dissuade other people from making up their own minds. And, for that matter, if you like Joss Whedon, you should love this show. His stamp is on every iota of minutae within this show. Didn't like "Out of Gas"? Must have hated "The Zeppo" (Which I thought was one of the most original bits of TV I'd ever seen. But, I digress. I don't like having my mind made for me, so I will stop trying to make up other's for them.

It's RKL.

Anyways, people are entitled their opinion but I am entitled to make of that opinion what I will. Plus this person is trying to make Firefly look bad. Plus, if the series is so bad then why aren't there alot of bad reviews. There is maybe about 50 reviews under three stars. That makes at least 850 reviews 3 stars or higher. Still ranked under 100 in the sales chart over 7 months after being put up for sale and has an average of 5 stars among 913 reviews. I mean it seems popular opinion goes against what this person is claiming as well as I am not a Buffy or Angel fan so how does that make me a Joss Whedon fan. I personally think this person hasa beef with Joss Whedon stuff.

Oh, and play Cantr II at www.cantr.net.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

First off, I doubt anyone reading reviews will take this hack seriously since she can not even spell straight correctly. Secondly her need to write more than one scathing review just comes across as a bitter vendetta of some sort rather than objective criticism.

As to the "1000 fans" bit, I suppose she does not know that more than 200,000 copies of the DVD set have been sold (as of the last figure the Powers That Be released). I guess each of us "1000 fans" must have bought 200 copies each. Nice facts lady. Bitter, yes. Objective and unbiased review? Not so much.

I have to say....it took some getting used to. I'm not sure what it was (read FOX's lousey schedule) but I could not get into it when it was on TV. It was a little hard to swallow up until about the third episode.

This was one hard set to find by the way. I must have checked about 8 stores before buying it online at Amazon (same deal tonight for me with Bubba Ho-Tep), so she obviously doesn't have her information from a worthy source.

I finally wrote my review last night, and they have already added it to the list (916 now). It's titled "Absolutely the best!" and my handle over there is templetongate (ecgordon was taken, so I used the name of my website).

Please pardon my error, but my computer at home does not have the spell check I do at work.

Glass houses? Hardly. I would not write a review criticizing a show and leave words misspelled throughout the text. Here I am not quite as worried about it, but it is good to see that you are around to critique our spelling.

Odd you haven't posted in over 4 months & only do so now to correct spelling of another Browncoat. That seem right to you?

That's the whole point of posting reviews. If you think something is a waste of money, you can stop them from wasting their money as well. I want to read the positive reviews and the negative reviews when I am on the fence whether or not to buy something. I look at which views make sense, and seem to fit my way of thinking.

I bought a charcoal grill at Amazon.com, and wasn't sure if it was what I wanted, and there were a ton of positive reviews, so I went looking for the negative reviews. The only negative review I found complained that the grill didn't come with charcoal, it didn't come assembled, and after he finally got it up and running, he put his chicken on, and left it cooking and came back two hours later, and the chicken was burned to a crisp, so the grill didn't work right. I just laughed it off, and bought it anyways.

And as for a comment from somebody else...yes if you are going to criticize someone for not spelling something right in a review, you best be damned sure that your criticism is spelled correctly. I don't care if you are a fan of firefly or not, it kills your argument.

Set to go, snap. ball down, kick up, its on the way and, it, is...good! It's good! It's good! Adam Vinatieri booms a 48 yard field goal! And the game is over, and the Patriots are superbowl champions! The best team in the national football league!

The Hindenburg of Television - I agree!
It was one of the first of its kind - a wonder that a few priveleged select enjoyed and appreciated. Then due to an unpredictable spark (Fox Corp), the televsion series came to an abrupt, untimely end. In both cases, no one really knew why the demise occured (was Fox stupid?). After research, both errors were brought to light and aided in later developement (THE BIG DAMN MOVIE!!). Alta's Hubby.

I'm not sure why we do this every time a bad review is posted. I have loved things everyone else has loved, loved things everyone else has hated, hated things everyone else has hated, and hated things everyone else has loved. I have been the single negative review in a sea of positive on Amazon (not for Firefly, of course, or I wouldn't hang out on this board). That's just the way life goes. This woman is entitled to her opinion. We don't have to like it, or agree with it, but she's still allowed to have it and express it. Vote that her review isn't helpful or write your own if you want, and then just let it go.

While I agree on the notion of everyone being entitled to a point of view/opinion...

Firefly is well.. Firefly, a completly different kettle of fish. Firefly is just such a cunning creation that anyone who doesnt like it must have rocks in their head and shouldnt be polluting the gene pool.

Firefly could be used as an IQ test. People who love it are smart and people who hate it are clueless.

Nope, but I don't criticize for spelling (or grammar for that matter). I criticize critics who are critical of criticisms, but do the same thing in their critique that they were critical of in the critique they were critiquing.

Valid point Delia, but you must also recognize that Rklenseth is trying to bring to the community's attention that the same person has now posted two negative reviews. It is not as if this is someone who did not like the show, posted an honest, unbiased review and moved on. This person has now posted their poorly worded venom twice in an attempt to scare people off of Firefly.

Sure everyone is entitled to their opinion, and I would (and have) fight to defend that right. What I find fault w/ is this person's obvious need to degrade the show & try to influence the uninitiated against it.

Personally, I think it's fine to dislike Firefly.
It's when they feel they have to justify it by spinning falsehoods (like this Nancy63 character with her criticisms of the acting & originality) that it begins to irritate me.
She's obviously a witch, and we must purge the Devil from her

Seriously tho - while I love Amazon's customer review section, you only have to look at their #1 reviewer (one Harriet Klausner) to realise it has the odd flaw.

I looked her up when I read her review of Pandora's Star (great book, btw) in which she did a capsule summary of the book, praised it in dust-cover terms, and tried to give away the ending (luckily she evidently hadn't read it, so she got the ending completely wrong).

Turns out she's written over 7,000 reviews, and they all seem to be four or five star ones.

The mind boggles...

Ah, Harriet. Do you know, I've actually seen her quoted on a real life dust jacket? Can't remember for what, didn't buy it. I ignore her when she crops up. 7000 books (or whatevers) is a book (or whatever) a day for over nineteen years. Call me cynical, but I'm willing to bet she hasn't read at least some of them.

As for the writer of these two reviews, I will admit that that seems excessive. Usually, when I post a negative review, I do it shortly after finishing (or not) the book, and never look at it again. But whatever. Either way, I'm not sure what use our critisizing every negative review is, especailly on a board where 99.99% of readers are going to agree with us anyway.

In that case, I am glad I didn't throw in the end part, about "especially when the criticism of the critique pertains to an item that isn't critical to the original criticism, but is critical to the critique of that criticism." If I had added that, it might have become a little confusing, and that would not be good.
