Okay, so did no one catch Nathan's little Firefly shout-out on this week's Castle?

[Castle's staring off into space at the crime scene]
Det. Beckett: Hello?
Castle: Hm.
Det. Beckett: You okay?
Castle: I had sex with my ex-wife this morning. My first ex-wife, Meredith, Alexis' mom. And she's thinking about moving back to New York. Do you know what that would mean... to me?
That would be a Very, Special, Brand, of Hell. The Hell of the deep-fried Twinkie™.
Dets. Ryan & Esposito: Deep-fried Twinkie™?
Castle: Yeah, the guilty pleasure that you know is bad for you, so you only do it once, maybe twice a year, for the novelty...
[Dets. Ryan & Esposito nod knowingly]

I did catch that!! I grinned, but then was laughing harder at the 'deep fried twinkie' and then the knowing nod from the 3 men. God, I'm loving this show.

Ah, yes! I heard that line, but I was immediately distracted by the concept of the deep-fried Twinkie.

Now I am learning about scary.

THANK YOU so much for posting this! I was amazed that it wasn't posted earlier, and I would have posted it but I couldn't remember the exact conversation. I remember saying, "Wait, did he just say 'Special Hell'???"

I got the reference... and the twinkie line was great, and dead true!

The show is excellent, but I'm getting very nervous it won't get a second season.

Ahhhhh! Thanks for posting, my channel was still showing weather radar and rotational zones that might turn into tornados at that point of the show. For some reason, I just felt like I'd miss something really important. Dang it, I'm so sad I missed that! Hehe, guess I'll just have to watch it again On Demand! :)

Also, *grumble grumble* I'm frustrated that he's in his metro, tailored blue/black shirt/blazer so often and not dressed down in his brownish colored coat from the pilot. Though, I *think* I saw the return of the brown coat in the preview for next week, but it could have just been my wishful thinking playing tricks on my brain. I'll be sad if this gets cancelled.

Thanks for the insight to this CLJ. The wife and I have been watching CASTLE religiously and I’ve been hanging on every word for FF references from Nathan ( guess I wasn’t hanging good enough) anyway, I didn’t catch the nod to Firefly from Shepherd Book to Capt Reynolds in the ABC tv series. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

I also look for FF references from Adam Baldwin or any of the cast from the CHUCK tv series on NBC. It is my firm belief that many of the writers of television shows have a certain respect for one another and enjoy excellent writing just as anyone else. Who’s to say they don’t sneak in a little fun line here and there with respect to companion writers?

Thanks again for the info. I’ll be looking for what you’ve posted the next time I watch that particular episode of CASTLE, yes I will watch it again.

They broke the 5th wall? Oh that is awesome.

Writers do this quite often--I think it IS a gesture of recognizing brilliancy. Plus they're just like that.

At a showing of Spiderman 3 I heard someone telling the teens in front of us to shut up by "explaining" the special hell.

Guess it's still relevant. Ha ha. More!

Yes, it's called an "extra", a verbal or visual nod to another show generally by the same actor on a different show. For ex: if Adam were to say to Chuck - "Gee, I wish I had some grenades" or Summer were to tell another terminator "Also, I could kill you with math." You get the idea.

I wish him well, but new shows live on borrowed time.

Yeah, I caught it. Brought a wry grin to my face.
Well that makes two references.
Provided you count the type of "huh" he gave in the pilot ep of Castle when he dropped the handcuff keys, which was similar to the "huh" he gave in the FF pilot ep when he opened River's box.

But I could just be reading into that one.

Shiny!! The Brown coat returned tonight, Nathan Fillion/Castle/Captain Tightpants acquired two tickets to an exclusive party with the ulterior motive of conducting secret business, a sword fight takes place in the episode, he got to dance with the loveliest lady at the party, oh... and did I mention that they called it a shindig?

Oh man, I loved that episode waaaay too much! I'm still giddy! :D No wonder he wants the show to go on!

Cellardoor…………….!!!!!

Yeah….I caught that too. Seems that whole little scene was a little tribute to FF. I would like to thank all the creative forces of Castle for giving the browncoats and Joss a little shout-out like that….and thank Nathan too for his input if he helped with that bit of dialog. Also did anyone notice that the thief at the party was named Paul “Reynolds”. How neat was that”

And, during the dance, Beckett said "I didn't figure she was a criminal mastermind."

This episode was absolutely hi-larious! Loved it when the guy bid 4k on Castle's book.

There was also a non FF nod paid to Stephen King in the episode, not surprising considering Castle is something of an homage to the horror master. Anyway the murder victim, Susan Delgado, is a character in the novel "Wizard and Glass" from the Dark Tower series.

It was also great to see Patrick Bauchau as a not so bad bad guy. I don't think he's aged a day since his time on The Pretender. That man brings such class to every role he plays. Hopefully they can find a way to bring the character back.

Another one on this week's episode:

Daughter: "Who's Powell?"

Castle: "That was years ago, I'm sure he's forgotten all about that."

Definitely my favorite episode yet!
Loved the FF refs, but I really loved the firing range scene, and really REALLY loved the "stay in the car" bit, with Castle behind the wheel doing his own theme music, like a little kid.
Then when the action starts, so does the music... and it's the same music Castle was just doing!! (Maybe that's the basic recurring action music for the show, but I haven't been keeping track.)
Also love how the friendship between Beckett & Castle (and Castle's family) is developing.

EDIT: Love the whole father/daughter relationship, too!

• Chopping onions in the kitchen with goggles on

• Playing LazerTag (Priceless!)
Castle: "I sense fear in you."
Alexis: "Ha-haaa, you sense nothing!"

• Fencing, with Robin Hood dialogue.

Actually I like Mal’s, I mean Castle’s plan of attack in the car scene too. Windshield wiper to the face….classic.

I'm enjoying the show too. I just lost my DVR'd episodes as I moved and had to switch cable companies, but I have preordered the DVD's.

Maybe, but it's also a papraphrase of Mal's comment about Patience in the Firefly Pilot.

Castle's theme music was one thing. Having it over the transition (until Beckett stopped him) was what killed me.

Yeah, but the exact phrase is definitely Han talking about Lando (complete with the unspoken "I hope" at the end).

Watch the latest episode of CASTLE Friday morning again with the wife ( she was working Monday and wasn’t able to see it) and low and behold I caught something that hasn’t been mentioned here yet. Imagine this scene from FF.

Jamestown:

Nicely dressed man, “ I knew a Kestler once.”

Mal, “ Knew?”

ND man, “ He was a good middle man, didn’t filtch.”

Serenity crew, “ What happened.”

ND man ,” Heard to was moving contraband through town, gave him a peck of trouble for it.”

Mal, “ What kind of trouble?”

ND man, “ The kind where they chopped off his hands and feel and rolled him into the bog.”

Wash, “ They peck pretty hard around here!”

I’m mentioning this because I just noticed that one of the rich families that were invaded by the jewel thieves ring was named KESTLER!!

You can see the name clearly written on the big pad when the PD are comparing the charities the families were all involved in.

At first my wife was saying that the “shindig” remark and the name “ Paul Reynolds” were just things that happened to be there. But I showed her the “Kestler” name and said “ Why didn’t they just use Jones, or Tiberius……anything but Kestler?” I won the battle, not the war…..lol.

Mal, “ I may have been on the loosing side, not sure it was the wrong one.”

I've got one that I never would have suspected had I not watched the credits.
Season 2 of Robot Chicken ep#44 Rabbits on a roller coaster. You need to have the commentary on to know which character he is. also watch the credits to see what they did with the Mutant Enemy logo.
