Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

I'm a refugee from the "OB" (the original Firefly forum board put up and still maintained by Fox). Looking for another home.

I feel heartened by the above "I love freedom of speech just as much as you, but I hope that you will post messages that are at least somewhat civil and in good taste." quote...and am hoping that means this is a safe place? I'd love to meet others who appreciated Firefly as much as I did, have no problem with a good civil debate and can tease along with the best of them.

Is this a safe place? If so, may I join you all?

Yes, this is a most welcoming place - UNLESS you wander into the Real World Event Discussions (aka RWED) area. Then all bets are off. If you stumble in there, wear a very thick skin.

And Welcome to the Shiniest Ship in the 'Verse!

Oh, we've got emoticons aplenty - when you hit "Reply", you'll see them on the let side of your screen.

As for staying out of RWED, I'm reminded of the movie "2010":

All these worlds are yours, except Europa. Attempt no landing there. Use them together, use them in peace.

I won't tell ANYONE to attempt no landing in RWED; I'd just say that before jumping in, lurk for a while and watch. Have a point of view, and get ready to defend it against all sides. As one of the longtime members often points out, you can learn an awful lot about people by just asking the same question of them: "And why do you believe that?"

So, that warning given, I'd just say this:

Jump in! The water's fine - although there ARE sharks in it.

(oooh, look ^^^ - There's an emoticon now!)

By the way, we love getting new members around here. Makes us feel mighty an' all.

Mike

I don't know if I *LOVED* 2010 - it had its issues - but I found it certainly helped clarify a few things. Think of it as 2001 For Dummies. I think I must see 2001 at least every few years. It changes; watch it at 20, then watch it at 40, and see if you see it the same. I was lucky enough to see it in the theatre when it was new and I was much, much younger. It made an impact, to say the least.

I was just digging through some boxes of old stuff in the garage, and found my 2001: A Space Odyssey ("In CINERAMA!") poster still rolled up and tucked away. Might have to matte and frame that one...

I can take it, up to a point. But I've been in three or four threads there already, and it's SUCH a joy! Honest debate with INTELLIGENT people...I'm in heaven! Admittedly so far because not only are the posts intelligent, but there seems to be somewhat of a left leaning...ahem.

But I have questions...I'll wander around, pracitce and get my shit together, but a couple of things would help speed it up:

How does one go back to replies to one's topics?

How does one get bak out of a particular thread back to that forum?

Is there a way of being notified of new posts in a particular thread?

Much appreciated. Between the lovely welcomes, the appreciated words of warning, the intelligent posts (hey, I don't care if you're right or left, actually, as long as you MAKE SENSE!), the ability to use my beloved emoticons, and the fact that this forum is still ALIVE (which many Firefly forums, in my wandering around, aren't)...I'm starting to feel at home already. SHINY!!

No, to me 2010 is plain old fun sci fi...2001 is a completely different matter. "Loved" as in "enjoyed", actually, not "appreciated" and "thought provoking" as 2001.

Hi there you two!

You've received plenty of warning about the RWED, so don't think I need to say anything more than even if you do see a really heated nasty fight, a lot of those people are friends on other parts of the board despite hanging out on the opposite ends of the political pool.

We do have a few very strongly right-leaning folks out there, but they're honest and genuine and thoughtful in their beliefs. Everyone is, actually, don't mean to imply our liberals aren't or that in other places there's no such thing as honest right-wing folk. (I'm neither, for the record, if you end up talking to me you'll see a lot of 'on the other hand's. But don't mistake that for me not having a position. You'll see. :) )

You will see maybe some hints of prejudice and bias that may alarm you, even some strange behaviour. Heck, I readily admit I'm a kook, and biased towards the scientific sides of an issue. But we also respect people's right to speak, so we also don't really believe in banning anyone. If you see someone who just really offends you and you can't understand why we allow them to hang around, the best course of action I can suggest is to ignore them.

So, on other topics... If you guys are really into Firefly and the Whedonverse (and you're here, so I'm assuming you are), I thought I might point out our fanfiction, images, and fanart area, the Blue Sun Room.

Hi Niki. Welcome!

There's all kinds of goodies buried away in old threads on fff.net, just waiting for new eyes like yours to dig them out and refresh them. The Blue Sun Room forum has many insanely thought-provoking discussions of characterization and plot. Mostly in terms of fanfic, but even if you're not into that, the writers here are pretty clever and their ideas are good insights into Joss's lovely `verse.

Most show-related topics have been pretty much gone over to death by now though, so RWED is the liveliest place. There surely are some great discussions happening there, and I've gotten many eye-opening insights into politics and such through those threads over the years. I've lurked now and then this summer and the mob has seemed well behaved lately. There hasn't been much of the usual tit-for-tat and name-calling.

I'm telling you, though, beware! You never know when someone unexpected is gonna jump out of nowhere and rip you a new one. It's happened to me, and wasn't pleasant. I don't have a tough enough hide for it. I generally only jump into the RWED fray if there's hard science or cute kitty pictures involved.

Wow, what wonderful welcomes!

I look forward to many lively debates. I have no problem with people laying into me, I can pretty much hold my own.

Nathan is an incredibly well-mannered, gentle person from what I heard (a number of those there have met him and others of the BDHs--do you call them that here, too?). His Twitter signature is a good sign of that. I respect him, Joss and Firefly.

I only discovered Firefly by chance (having been somewhat of a Buffy fan and hearing good things about it) a year or so ago. I had rented what looked like a kind of neat movie called "Serenity", really liked it.

So when I discovered Firefly I fell in love...of course. It wasn't until several epis in that I realized it was connected to Serenity, which was a gas. Bought all of it, plus "Done the Impossible", of course, and been in love ever since!

Just had a bit of that on the board I left, and it was FUN! Myself, I'm a dog person, but we've had up to eight cats at once and it was quite an...ahem...learning experience! All rescues of one form or another, and I'd never had cats (!), so there were a few years of them eddicating us. Eeep.

ECGORDON

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

Hey, niki, welcome aboard. I haven't visited the OB is several months because, as you said, the Off Topic threads were practically the only place with any activity, and I am not one to discuss politics and religion with someone I do not know, and not that often even with people I do know. I learned my lesson years ago when Adam Baldwin himself chastised me for less than "right" thinking, if you know what I mean.

One thing we don't have here that you were used to on the OB is the UMTM (that's "Unread Messages To Me" for those not familiar with that board). I've noticed you've already responded directly to some other members, but here it is best to hit the "Reply With Quote" link on someone's post so that everyone knows to whom you are addressing a particular comment.

All of the various forums have a link on the right hand side of the main page, and clicking on one of them will take you to a page with a list of the last fifty or so active threads, and at the bottom is a link to threads that have been archived. Also, when you click on any thread look at the top left of the page for the "Latest Posts" to see if there are new, unread posts on that thread. If there are, it will say "Since your last view," but if not it will display posts "As of today."

There are several informative threads around about how to post images here, how to upload stuff to the Blue Sun Room, etc. I'll look around and see if I can find them to bring them back up to the top of the list for you.

Enjoy your time here, and as always, keep flying!

Hi there new guys.I would like to reiterate what a cool little site this is.Appreciation goes out to Haken, who is the site's owner. It's colourful, user friendly and interesting to browse around.I've noticed loads of new converts entering the fray recently and it's fun to look at reactions to episodes that have been watched by them for the first time.So even the stuff that we've been over hundreds of times before is still often revisited from a fresh newbie perspective.I can remember posting a question about Inara not so long ago(as a relative newbie)and the guys who have been here for eons turned it into a thread that was 200 posts long.So even well explored stuff still illicits fervent discussion.Welcome aboard.I'm sure you already own plenty virtual brown coats, but may I be so bold as to bring out a fresh one from the site cupboard and issue it to you on behalf of everybody.

"Mal" & Mike: Your Cosmo and Rodger look SOO much like my beloved Missy (especially Rodger), only she never got bigger than your pix as kitties. She was cat of neighbor across the street who keeled over in aerobics class in her early 40s. Family came, took one cat, left Missy who ran away. I heard her one night, started leaving food out for her--VERY shy. Finally trapped her by leaving food in our pickup and standing in the rain waiting for her to enter, then shutting door.

She was my miracle cat. TINY, never left my bedroom, adored me more than any cat I've ever known or could imagine. I nursed her all through cancer (which she got by hiding under that house while they blanketed it and sprayed it, I believe). One day, for the first time ever, she left my room, came upstairs, walked up to my husband and rubbed against his leg, up to my brother-in-law (who lived with us off and on) and rubbed up against his leg, walked out into the back yard (!) and lay in the sun for a long time. That night she died.

And they say animals don't know. I've never gotten over her, even tho' I'm a dog person for the mot part.

The pix are wonderful--the captions almost as good, thank you!

Thanks Peacekeeper, I will wear the coat proudly! Yes, I love the look of the boat, it looks like a LOT of work went into it, I'd like to thank Haken too.

I've always been sad I came so late to Firefly and missed SO much, people who got to go to panels and see/hear the BDHs in person (tho' I did get to meet Adam briefly at this year's Wondercon here in SF), and some who even got to meet and talk to Nathan--and apparently both they and Joss even used to post there.

But I guess I can see it from your perspective, since I know each person I've turned on to Firefly let's ME see it from a different perspective and makes it fresh in a way to watch it with them. I'm glad we can give some back of what we receive from being able to be part of a Browncoat community, late-comers that we be! :biggrin"

It's really nice that this place is so active; I searched around (someone at the OB suggested this as a "much friendlier" Firefly forum when I first went there, but I didn't remember the name until I got here) and most of those I found were long dead or had few posts in a long time. This boat ROCKS!

Well, in your profile (My Firefly), you can scroll down and see all your recent posts and replies. If you don't want to scroll to where you left off, you can click on the most recent, and it will pop the window to where you last posted on that thread, so you can pick up from there.

Quote:

Not sure what you're trying to do. I'm on a Mac, so I'm in the habit of just hitting "Command-Enter" on my keyboard, which opens whatever link I'm looking at in a new window. I take it from there, and when I'm done, I close the window and I've still got the old window open and pulled up. I tend to leave my browser bookmarked to fireflyfans.net/community, so when I open it, I've got a quick overview of the forum areas and the last 5 active threads.

From there, I tend to look at what's going on in General Discussions, RWED, Other Science Fiction Series, and occasionally the Buffy and Angel areas. I used to spend quite a bit of time in the Buffy/Angel areas, but there hasn't been much in the way of news out of those 'verses in quite some time, so not so much reason to hang out there. Except for "The Tragic Death of Count Chocula" that got posted there. It's hilarious. And horrible. In equal measures. If you don't know what it is, Google-image search it. (It's work-safe, so don't worry; it's just a painting).

Quote:

Is there a way of being notified of new posts in a particular thread?

Yes. In your profile, you can add signatures, avatars, and click on the "e-mail me when someone replies to me" button. It doesn't work for me because I registered under old, dead e-mail addresses which I no longer have access to, and I haven't updated those addresses. Plus, with some of the "friends" I've made in the RWED area, I'm not sure I *want* my real e-mail addy out there in the world... ;)

Usually.), but we try to keep our feuds confined to one or two areas. I have vehement disagreements with some people here, but when we discuss things like "Silent Running" or episodes of Firefly, we can actually find common grounds for agreement. What unites us is the show.

But we also respect people's right to speak, so we also don't really believe in banning anyone. If you see someone who just really offends you and you can't understand why we allow them to hang around, the best course of action I can suggest is to ignore them.

Right on. Ignore, or mock openly. We don't ban. I honestly can't remember a single person here (and I've been here since '05, so I'm not quite a noob, but others have been here far longer...) who ever got banned. Tagged as "offensive" a few times - and I'm not even sure what that means or entails, because I can get down in the muck with the worst of 'em, and I've never even been warned, so Haken (our dear and fluffy internet lord around here) is truly a very open-minded soul.

Been wondering where you were, Mal. We're worse off for your not being there to offer your input.

Thank you for telling me who you are. I would sincerely appreciate it if you told nobody over there that I am here. I just want them to leave me alone and I will do the same.

Good to see you. It's lovely to see a familiar face, long as it's a friendly or neutral one! Stay shiny, Niki

Ahhh...looks like the controls I'm looking for are in Profile. I'll check that out. Great, thanx!

Hmmm...went to my profile and to "edit profile"--cannot find a button for "notify me". That's what I was looking for.

As to the other, I want to be able to post, then get back to the same thread I posted in. Right now all I know to do is click on "community" and go from back there. Does that make sense?

Oh, shoot! I tried to edit my post to put a tag line in and erase my "home page"--I don't want that out there, given the problems I ran into before. Why isn't it updating?

KATESFRIEND

I've lurked at the OB on occasion, but never wanted to participate. The replies to newbies I read were often cruel. It always struck me as odd that some of the feelings of family and togetherness engendered by Joss's work could attract such an opposition in other people. I hope that this helps others understand that what they may be attracted to in the Whedonverse is something they are missing in their lives, that consideration, courtesy and respect has to be practiced to be meaningful. We're all here to learn something, and help each other through. Just not through the "dark side".

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

Niki, I'm not sure what problem you're having in returning to a particular thread. When I post a reply it automatically jumps to my post at the end of that thread, then I just click the "home" link to get back to the mainpage. From there you can see the latest fifteen threads from the various forums. To get back to any forum use the links on the right side of the page underneath the "News Headlines" box.

As for getting notice about replies, look for the "Your Options" underneath the message field when you are composing a post. The options are "Include signature with my post," "Notify me when someone responds to my comment" and "Override notification."

I assume you have an email address on file from when you registered here, so notices will be sent there.

That's not quite what happened over there and you know it. Please don't start spreading falsehoods here as you did there.

Yes, Gordon, I've done that. No e-mails, and I only have one e-mail address. I've also had no luck trying to edit my profile and my signature doesn't show up in my posts. Must be doing something wrong!

Will try the other suggestions, thank you.

That's exactly my opinion. It takes little effort to at least be civil, and that's all I ask of anyone. Even snarking is okay, as long as it doesn't become a vendetta or too ugly. And the fact that we're all supposedly Browncoats who came together to be with other Browncoats, especially given Nathan's opinion on the matter, mystified me.

Bookreader, would you do me the courtesy of telling me who you are on the OB, so that I know who I'm dealing with. I'm not spreading falsehoods; I suppose I should caveat what I say with "that was how I saw it", because it is.

If you saw things differently than I did, I'll accept that we disagree, and hope we can leave it at that. I want no more than to go from here. I respect your views are different from mine.

I'd love to meet others who appreciated Firefly as much as I did, have no problem with a good civil debate and can tease along with the best of them, but the things that happened there have made me very gun-shy of joining anywhere else.

Is this a safe place? If so, may I join you all?

Great to have you here.

Ahh, thanks. That's kind of you.

I find that posting in RWED doesn't do much for my peace of mind, nor does it bring out the better aspects of my personality. So unless a gross misuse of science pushes me over the edge (cough*cough*evolutiondebate*cough*) I'm generally happier keeping my distance.

Niki - if you want to join a new site incognito, starting a thread is not the way! And it appears that you've been found already...

Yes; as I said, I DID that. I leave it that way with every post. No e-mails (if that's the way for notification?). Obviously something is wrong, as I've tried to edit my profile and add a tag line and that hasn't worked either. I'll work it out eventually. Thanx for the help.
