My husband and I love firefly so much that we named out son after Capt. Malcolm. I can only hope that he grows up to be just as strong as the character. If we have a girl we are going to name her Inara.

Now THAT's over-the-top fannishness! Sorry, just my humbe opinion. Poor kid, even tho' nobody'll pick up on it unless you tell them, imagine growing up "Malcolm"--everyone will connect it to "Malcolm in the Middle"! At least "Inara" is a beautiful name...tho' every Browncoat in the universe would "get it".

I'm surprised at you Niki.A little harsh if not a bit rude to undermine the naming of a child. Its not like she is naming him "Moon Unit" or "Rumplestiltskin". Malcolm is a perfectly common and acceptable name, regardless of it's meaning for the parents.Steady on girl.An apology may be in order.!!!!

Peacekeeper---keeping order in every verse!!!

I was just gonna say that it's the Vulcan word for "Serenity."

Lord, I forgot to congratulate you first of all! So most congrats; may he be happy and healthy and live a long, happy life!

There's a "Malcolm" in Star Trek? Oh, wait, you said it was "Enterprise"? No surprise, I've only watched it once...

"Inara" is a gorgeous name; I hope you have a girl next time!

Malcolm is a very common Scottish name, comes of some old Scottish tribes that in the Highlands. The name dates back about 500 years

From wiki quote:
Malcolm derives from the gaelic 'Maol', meaning 'shaven-head', and was used generally as a term for a monk. Thus 'Maol Chalum' can be translated as 'monk' or 'disciple of Columba'. The connection between the names Malcolm and MacCallum is shrouded in mystery although they are sometimes shown as alternative names for the same clan.

El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz was a Malcolm before he discovered the nation of Islam, you might know him better as Malcolm X so yes its also a common name for the brotha's

Yay, a baby! Congrats!

For what it's worth, people have been naming their kids after popular characters for millenia. Why else would Christian saints' names be all over European culture?

Though I have to honestly say, if it had been a name less common than Malcolm, I'd feel creeped out, hehe. In Farscape fandom there were some people naming their daughters Aeryn, which is just... unnecessary. Just spell it Erin, people! It's not the kid's fault you're a fan! I say anything that doesn't immediately and solely identify the kid's name as the product of fandom is fair game. They should have the right to grow up neutrally and not have their chances of being taken seriously as adult ruined by being named Sailor Moon Smith.
