I was thinking about the moment I realized I was hooked on Firefly. Knowing nothing about the TV series, I saw the movie first and then had to be re-educated. I really liked the movie, but there's something missing if you don't already know the characters (and even more missing if you do!). But the action and dialogue was sa-WEET! Still, I didn't realize I was hooked until I watched Serenity and Mal shot the Fed without a second thought. It was like my "shot heard round the world". I think the hostage standoff is such an overused device in TV shows, and Simon was playing it out as per usual, but Mal made it obsolete! His actions made perfect sense for his character and the situation, but I was so inured with the traditional TV scenarios that I never saw it coming. That's when I first realized Joss had me!

So that's me. When did you know?

America loves a winner!

I wasn't the Whedon fan at the start of the show I became afterwards, so it took me a couple of eps to get 'hooked'.

I'd like to say " oh, at the very first episode I watched", or to that effect, but I think it wasn't util 'OoG' that I fell in love w/ the show. It was good from the start, of course, and kept me coming back for more, but I wanna say that was 'the moment'. Then, I knew....

What hooked me in the first place, besides the whole theme, which I thought awesome from get - was one of the preview clips (obviously cut from the Dailies/Rush Track, with timer and all that rot) of the whole unification day toast scene from Train Job.

I laughed SO hard when Baldy eats the floor, cause I've been known to use that trick myself, heheheh.

What completely slew me though ?
Crow, through the engine, heck yes.

The style of it backed up by hero-who's-NOT-an-idiot thing just dynamited the pond, although Mal *does* have his occasional moments of idiocy (naked!), but who don't ?

I liked the show from the get go, but I realized I was truly hooked on it with Out of Gas. That's when I decided I had to set up two different VCRs to record it, just in case one crapped out.

I knew I was hooked on Firefly when I watched the series for the second time. When I saw the BDM once or twice, and watched the series once, I still was be a bit fuzzy on everything. By the second viewing of the series everything made much better sense for me.

I saw the movie first too and immediately ordered the DVDs. The show also struck me at that same moment, Dobson with a gun to River's head, them BLAM! Mal shoots without even breaking stride. I was hooked.

I saw the show first on SyFy. Then went to the movie. I fell in love with the concept and overall grunginess of life on the rim. No matter the technology people are still people. The good, the bad, and the ugly. ...oh yeah, and the sexeh.

This was the exact moment for me as well. It was around OoG and WS that I just didn’t want it to end.

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Well, sort of a reversal, here. I WOULD have been hooked if I'd known about the series, but since I grabbed the movie on a whim at the video store, I guess you could say I was hooked before I even saw the series. If I'd known there was a SERIES connected to the movie, I'd have found it somehow. I didn't. Thought it was just one more really great movie I found by accident, standing alone.

When I found out about the series and rented IT, I fell in love but was thinking by the second episode "gee, there's something vaguely familiar about this"...when I got through the series and discovered the BDM was the movie I'd fallen in love with a year earlier, it could only be called "a love affair I'd started a year earlier with the movie".

I guess the way I KNOW I was in love as much as I was could be determined by the fact that I sought out a website for other "lovers"...given I've never done that before in my life.

What tipped me off was the silence in space in the first episode (Train Job). It was, "uh-oh, I'm doomed to watch this show now."

Then when Mal killed Crow, I knew I had to get everyone I knew to watch the series.

When I pulled the set off the shelf and saw Ron Glass was in it. I have been a Ron Glass fan for years. I wiil never forget him dress in drag, for a stake out, on the Barney Miller series.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I watched the show from the beginning on FOX, with the exception that either I or my vcr screwed up the second week and I missed "Bushwhacked." Didn't get to see that one until the dvds came out since none were ever repeated. I did like it from the start, but I was hooked with the third episode aired, "Our Mrs. Reynolds."

Many fans from the beginning point to Mal kicking Crow into the engine as the defining moment, but I was just as psyched over a character moment in the scene just prior to that, when Mal returned the medicine to the town that needed it more than he needed Niska's money. That was a character I wanted to see more of.

I felt the same way. I realized that at that time, after a year or so of "Enterprise" I still didn't know all its characters names, and didn't really care about them. From the first I knew and cared about all of the crew aboard Serenity.

For me it was the movie. I was hooked right from the beginning. After I saw the movie and did research. I got even more excited. I was a huge Buffy fan and it hit me that Firefly was the show I wanted to see, but couldn't. I was a senior in college so I didn't have too much for TV.

After hearing "What month is it?" and seeing Serenity flying over the train, I suspected.

After Jayne saw shiny angels, and "Best thing for everyone. I'm right there with you.", I knew.

The rest of the show confirmed it.

Where to begin, let's see.

First, I must admit that I only watched the occasional Buffy episode back when. So I knew of Joss but was not a true blue fan.

Hook #1:
Having said that, here it goes. I was watching something on Fox when the hook came and grabbed me: it was a promo for Firefly and what sealed it was those damn horses with Serenity flying over them (I got goosebumps right now remembering that moment).

Hook #2:
TJ was good stuff, different funny, filled with character development. And OMR really tickled me. I loved how Zoe showed her lighter side and mercilessly teased Mal about his new bride (Classic). I said to myself they're like regular people, who goof around like the way people do.

But here's what put the final nail, toes up and pour the dirt on top of the coffin - Jaynestown.
It was then that I fell hard for this show. Every single character is well developed and has something interesting to contribute. This was Joss' masterpiece - Bar None!

I saw the movie Serenity first and that's what hooked me. When Mal shot the Operative after the Operative said "I am unarmed", I just burst out laughing. That was something you never see in movies, someone doing the logical thing. An enemy says I am unarmed, then just blow the mother away. I also loved the Reaver chase at the beginning of the movie and the big space battle and the final fight. I didn't know the actors except for Ron Glass from his Barney Miller days and Adam Baldwin because he's been in tons of movies. I had nothing invested in the characters, so I didn't weep when Book and Wash died. I just thought it was a really cool, fascinating movie. Then I found out it was based on a TV show. I soon had my hands on the DVDs for Firefly and watched the first 8 in one sitting and the rest the next day. Been a big fan ever since.

Firefly was on my list of shows to check out after noticing that Jewel's character had the same name as her role in Serenity.
Cat-sitting my aunt's house with HD 60-inch TV, saw a mini-marathon of Firefly, caught last part of Ariel, around where the Hands of Blue killed the cops. Fairly confusing, but several other episodes to check out. Then when Mal wrenches Jayne, that got my attention. I was fairly hooked.
After getting the DVDs and seeing Pilot and OoG, knew my impression was validated.

I had bought the BDM for $5 ex-rental because it was cheap. The day after watching it, I went into astore with some gift vouchers in hand and saw Firefly - it was the first time I'd ever bought a tv series. I was really enjoying it but Saffron tipped me over the edge:
"the special hell"
"You got a wife? All I got was that dumbass stick sounds like it's raining"
"I only fell is all."
"Whoa - good bible."
"She was all naked and articulate."
"I wish you hundreds of fat children."
"evil, lecherous hump."
"I knew you let her kiss you."

And the priceless moment that no-one ever mentions until I do and then they say, "oh yeah, that was classic." Mal's look when Saffron offers to wash his feet.

So I joined up here and I started to show the series to EVERYONE.

RIPWASH

Well, I guess I'm in the majority here. I really liked the show from the get-go, watching it on Hulu. But I think it was Out of Gas that really drew me in and hooked me. The sense of family and love for each other (and Serenity) was so very intense, the flashbacks were great, the writing was excellent, the editing was wonderful. I just watched it again yesterday and by golly if I didn't tear up at the end when Mal falls asleep and dreams of seeing Serenity for the first time. Sheer bliss.

I knew when I first saw the Dvd boxset. I'd seen the whole show on TV, and enjoyed it, but when I saw the DVD's I suddenly realised just how much I'd enjoyed it, and how much I missed it, and that I had to have it to watch again and again

For me it was the very first time I saw a bit of the show. It was on in the summer of 2003 on Space (Canada's scifi network) and I hadn't caught it originally because I didn't get Fox. I caught the last 20 minutes of Heart of Gold and loved it. I went out and bought the DVD set and that, as they say, was that.

I think it says a lot about Firefly that I caught a glimpse of what is considered by many to be a weak episode, and was hooked.

We are way more similar here than I'd like to admit, AU! It was exactly like that for me too.

"Ariel" absolutely cemented that take on it for me. I was floored. Then "Serenity" wiped the floor with my a*s.
