1701 wasn't the first twin engine craft. It's a loginca; choice for a lot of reasons so FIREFLY naturally would have followed along.

The question that needs an answer is: If Enterprise had never been on TV, would any SciFi have ever been made? WIthout fictional space travel, would The Joss have been able to get any financing?

Thr United States Navy prefers dual engine design aircraft, so it quite possible that designers of spacecraft would follow this example. I do not feel they would be mounted in nacelles. This was a unorthodox design. I would believe ships looking more like the Battlestar Galactica would dominate the concept of large interstellar spacecraft.

I always thought the supports holding the engines looked weak. Of course the ship was not designed to land on the surface of a planet. And that would rule out dealing with gravity. But I feel a ship designed for combat should be more solid.

Starfleet ships weren't built for combat (or at least not just for combat). They were explorers and diplomats 90% of the time. "Peacekeeping" was something Starfleet tended to do only when it had no choice.

Also, part of Matt Jeffries' original concept was that the warp nacelles would throw out too much radiation to keep them close to the hull (which is why pretty much every ship in TOS had their nacelles out at the end of pylons --Klingons and Romulans included). Also, from a visual/dramatic perspective, you want the audience to be able to identify every part of the ship at a glance. Since Roddenberry didn't want big Buck Rogers-style sparks shooting off the ship, they needed some other way to say "these are the engines."

The Enterprise was part of the battlefleet. If a ship is going to take on this resposibility, then it should be designed to deal with it. A good example is what finally finished the Reliant in "The Wrath of Khan". One good hit on the support and the engine was gone.

If we ever have REAL space battleships, I predict that they will either look like spheres or beer cans. That is so that they can turn about easier around their center of mass. Some long shape with things sticking out would be unwieldy.

I'm sure I have a friend who has it. I can borrow it.
One friend of mine is a shopaholic and has about every toy imaginable. His main room has three things. Ten remotes for all the devices in his entertainment cabinet with a big soft chair parked in front of it, two dozen empty coke cans sitting at any empty space available, and an ashtray packed with Camel butts. I should have such a lifestyle. So if I start digging in this pile I am sure he has "Enter the Dragon" buried under it.

The current military craft Osprey uses 2 engines in similar configuration to Firefly, as well as Harriers. Having one unbalances the load. Firefly was a cargo craft, best to have 2 engines for landing.
