The last TV show I watched every week was ST:TNG. I've never seen Buffy or Angel. I didn't watch Seinfeld or Friends. I've never seen the Sopranos or Sex and the City. In short, I don't care for TV.

I do spend a lot of time on AR15.com, where we talk about how cool guns are and how stupid liberals are. Well, turns out Firefly has a huge following over there and they turned me on to the show. Based on their recommendation, I bought the DVD set. I can't freaking believe how good it is.

I could gush for hours but I'd be preaching to the choir here. Suffice to say I love it and I can't wait for the movie. I've just today finished watching the last episode, and I'm looking forward to watching again (and making my wife watch with me this time).

Anyway, glad and surprised to be here. Hope to share in the geekdom at least until next April. :)

Welcome fellow Browncoat to our ranks!

You better watch it though. There are quite a few liberal Browncoats around these parts that like to put up a fight. I'm not one of them but be forewarned.

Oh, and play Cantr II at www.cantr.net.

I just took a peek at AR15.com, and it's pretty astonishing, not the sort of place one would think a Firefly fan base would dwell. So what all do they say over there? Anything good? It's all about Vera, huh? :) Myself, I wouldn't mind a working copy of Mal's sidearm....

No, wait, I wanna working copy of Zoe's Winchester-y firearm....

I'd say 99.9% of ARFCOMers relate with Jayne. But there are plenty of themes in Firefly that resonate with a pro-second-amendment crowd. Freedom. Self-reliance. Fighting the "big government" alliance. But mostly it's the guns.

Oh, I don't mean to oversimplify and portray them as a bunch of militia kooks. They like the same things about Firefly that everyone likes--the writing, the acting, the casting, the total package.

But mostly it's the guns :)

It does go to show how wide Firefly's appeal is. My friends and I spend a lot of time talking about how dangerous guns are and how stupid conservatives are, but we love the BDH too.

Good point, Cardie--at least we have that in common!

I didn't mean to come in here and pick a fight--I just wanted to point out how I came to learn about the show. And to some extent, if I can't be myself, ain't much point in bein' here.

But I'm not into petty bickering and name calling. Civil debate is fun. If we just stay on topic that's fine with me, too (but I already see other posts about Bush and Michael Moore and stuff it'll be hard to stay out of )

So--next dumb question--is everybody pretty much moving over to the "official" site or will this place survive?

I can't subscribe to that opinion. I don't think guns are cool. In my opionon they are dangerous. But this isn't the place to discuss such matters, is it.

Perfect use of the quote JCKnife. I was surprised to learn that this show reared its head on a gun enthusiast's chat board. I guess it goes to show that people are multi faceted, there isn't just pro-gun anti sci-fi, or pro sci-fi anti gun. There's a wide mix. My feeling has always been, if you're enough of an enthusiast about one thing, it's likely that you will more likely have big enthusiasms about other things. Just because someone carries a gun and likes talking about them, does not mean that they won't enjoy geeking out about a SCi-Fi TV series. I think it's great, diversity is the true constant in people.

I couldn't believe I fell in love with a TV show either! I'm like you... Sienfeld who? What and the City? The last TV show I watched w/ semi-regularity was the first couple of years of ER. Before that... um, MASH maybe. And before that, the ORIGINAL Star Trek. Yeah, I'm THAT old!

My SO kept trying to interest me in FF. I drifted through the livingroom for a couple of shows, then got hooked by Out of Gas. The spent the NEXT episodes watching and kicking myself for having missed the first shows! When word of the DVD came out, all I could think of was "THANK YOU JESUS!" And I'm not even religious!

So- howdy!

Those people certainly CAN be dangerous. What is required is a thorough understanding of the rules and an utmost respect for them. I think you'll find that 98% of gun enthusiasts have those things, and 98% of criminals do not. So in the end, it's criminals who are dangerous, which is a given.

Okay I have to take a little bit of umbrage at the "people who own them and use them are dangerous" part. The misuse I can agree with you on, 100% just like I'd agree that anyone who misuses a car, alcohol or a wood chipper is probably dangerous.

But my job requires me to carry them, and occasionally to use them. Guns are very much a tool, just like anything else. If you run around like an idiot with them then you're as irresponsible as someone who runs around with scissors or a chainsaw. The idiocy factor being the dangerous bit not the thing used to inflict the idiocy.

I'm a cowboy, yeah they really do still exist, and I work on a ranch in the middle of nowhere which is within spitting distance of the Mexican border. Not having firearms in that situation is irresponsible and dangerous. The closest police are over a half hour away and there is all manner of wildlife that just loves the taste of horseflesh (and peopleflesh in some instances) running about. If a Javilina goes all sorts of soft in the brainpan and is going after one of our prize Arabians yelling at him ain't gonna cut it. Not to mention coyotes, about 6 types of rattlesnakes, mountain lions, the occasional bear (whodathunkit?), packs of wild dogs people dump in the desert, etc. etc.

I have guns, I have to. Sometimes I even have to use them, in fact I've had to use them more often than I thought I would when I took the job at the place. But I don't consider myself dangerous. What I do consider dangerous are people who make sweeping assumptions about people who do have need to carry and/or use guns. Not everyone lives in a nice and tidy well policed and shiny city, some of us live in what is still in a lot of ways the Wild, Wild West.

I'm against people using guns irresponsibly, anyone who's not off their nut isn't. But a lot of these blanket "no one should have guns" (I know you didn't go that far yet but it's not a far leap) statements get my dander up a little. I know where I live if none of us were allowed to have guns we wouldn't be able to survive. Not talking not survive as in not making a good living, I mean not survive as in corpsified if worse comes to worst. It's just the way things are.

I am very much for gun control. We have it here in the Great White North and things are still all well and good with the world.

That being said, I have no problem (nor anyone I have talked to) with people that carry firearms as related to there work. If you expect to be put in a dangerous situation during work then it *is* irresponsible *not* carry a firearm.

I am for gun control because these instances basically requiring the carrying of firearms is quite rare (though probably more common than I think, it'll still be too rare to not have gun control, IMHO). So, then rules should be set up to license people who need them.

I have never met someone who thinks that *no-one* should carry guns. I believe this to be society dependent. Here in North America we have bad guys that carry heavy weaponry, so, we need our cops to carry sufficient fire power to combat these people. The British are luck that they don't need there cops to carry.

When it comes to hunting, I believe that using firearms is unfair. I'm for using the bow and arrow. But, then again, opinions will differ.

You could've shared how you came to know about the show without mentioning talking about the "stupid liberals". You could've just mentioned where you came across the show.

I'm just saying that when coming to a new place it's best to not off handedly mention things that could get you kicked straight away, or, at least marked as a . It's just a lucky thing that the people here are really nice or... I'll reference the getting kicked again.

NERVOUSPETE

Hullo, JCKnife!

Welcome to the board, you have indeed chosen the TV show of champions. I salute your discerning tastes.

I consider myself a liberal, though over here in the UK that doesn't really carry any stigma, nor does being conservative. I think it's because we all meet in the same bars and get drunk together and argue good-naturedly... well, usually. Sometimes we even subscribe to opposing views while still maintaining our allegiences. I wish some people on the net were more willing to listen to other views and converse in a way that uses reasoning and empathy, but I guess I hope for too much given this lil'l baby we call the internet. Let it be said that you seem a nice chap, and are always welcome. Personally I think guns are dangerous (well, they fire a high velocity lead slug, figure it out) but I think the main danger comes from a naive innocence as to the damage they can do. If Hollywood were to start showing the real damage they can do, the really mess they can cause to a body, maybe fools wouldn't shoot them at other people. I see nothing wrong with firing at targets. As for keeping guns to fend off a dictatorship, those wars in such developed societies as America are won and lost through information, propaganda and dissent. If America were to fall into darkness, it would come in a subtle form that would be initially embraced. No initial independant force of arms could resist it. It would take guts and dissent and sacrifice. That being said, if I had to defend my loved ones, a gun would be most effective. Though personally I do archery, but I guess the axe murderer would have to wait while I string my bow. So... erm, I guess since the shootings at the school in Dunblane in Scotland (actually worse than Columbine, around a decade ago) I've been for very strict gun control. But then I have never lived in America, so I can only speak for my nation.

Gosh, that would sound amazingly weak and liberal, I guess, if I didn't heartily enjoy John Woo's Hong Kong movies and relish Jayne's gunplay.

All I'm saying is, argue with courtesy (and I'm frowning at liberal's name-calling here too!) and without anger or contempt, and I'd be happy to listen, argue with and pound some beers with you any day.

Welcome, JCKnife!

Pete
