Will Joss Whedon try to bring back Firefly/Serenity one last time?

A last ditch effort, I think we all know it's probably now or never. We know Nathan Fillion is still into it(Castle episode). The rest of the crew I'm sure would be willing to make a return.

I think now, more than ever he should consider another tv series with our favorite characters, and start talking to the actors and networks to see if there is interest.

There is still so much left to tell, and Joss knows this more than anyone.

In a New York minute , provided someone comes up with enough shiny coin...

What we really need is a 'corporate angel' like Jeff Bezos willing to front half the coin in return for DVD rights over the long haul , and a cable net like HBO or Showtime to front the other half in return for rights of first showing , plus a percentage of the DVD gross and some merchandising/syndication rights...Richard Branson could fulfill product via his Virgin stores and networks in Europe...

Bezos at Amazon would be the exclusive fulfiller of DVD and toy/merchandise orders , saving the cable net the troubles , and this would create synergy between the entities...Everybody Wins !

Especially us !

The 'Serenity' set would be built on a cheap godforsaken scrap of Nevada or better still , New Mexico , and made to be durable for the tour business when the ship set was not hot...All parties would get a cut of the proceeds from the Serenity parties , shindigs , walkthroughs , photo ops , etc.

Hobbs , New Mexico would be a great site , about halfway between the Branson spaceport and Bezos' place in Texas...Folk on the way to Carlsbad Caverns or Roswell would be compelled to make the stop , and Hobbs could use the economic boost...Like I said , " We Win " !

'Planetside' in New Mexico looks amazing , and if you doubt it , check out the Earth2 DVD's...

Or , New Mexico Tourism's 2010 Brochure :

http://viewer.zmags.com/publication/dc1982b9#/dc1982b9/1

Richard Branson has a Spaceport under construction in New Mexico , and the state government is very forward-looking on economic development...

Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin Spaceport is in nearby West Texas , and Oklahoma has a spaceport at a place named , ironically , 'Burns Flat'...

Hey! Hey! Am I going bazonkers, or is that the "original" Earth 2, the series that lasted about as long as Firefly? I loved that show, and was broken hearted when it died so quickly...

Or is that something else, and I'm just fantasizing?

It lasted roughly twice as long as Firefly , prior to which , it was my very favorite show...

Yes , it is one and the same , which means we have another love in common...

And , yes you are still going bazonkers , and I'd pull you back from that precipice , were you to be willing...Alas...

I really doubt Joss is going to go out of his way to revive Serenity. The past few times he's talked about it in interviews it sounds like he's going to let it sit until someone comes to him. Since I doubt any network is chomping at the bit to revive a series that under performed it's probably a lost cause. Sorry, that's just what the outlook seems to be right now.

As for Joss's next step I think it will be movies. Cabin in the Woods has some decent potential for him. It was most likely relatively cheap to produce and horror/suspense is mainstream enough that it could make a decent profit if it gets some word of mouth going. I think Joss needs to focus on the mainstream for a while if he wants to get some real pull with the studios. I mean could you ever see a studio choose him to helm a blockbuster movie? With his track record I just don't see something like that happening. Of course that might not be his goal, but man would I like it if the name Joss Whedon equated to instant profit.

Personally I think he should do The Serving Girl before anything else. Both he and Summer should have time available now (if not soon).

After that movies would be good, or do a series with any other studio but Fox. As O2TB said HBO or Showtime might be a good home. Maybe even a mini-series and see if it takes off.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

A Firefly/Serenity mini-series for the Sci-Fi Channel. It's what I've been hoping for ever since Universal got a hold of the property.

You're probably right. Sometimes you have to let go, and move on. I guess I'm prepared to do that.

New Mexico is a good idea - lots of Tax incentives for shooting here, which lowers the budget. Though Albuquerque would be the obvious place to shoot, at they have the facilities and crew available.

And Joss did say we'd know what his next gig was before the Dollhouse finale aired....

My personal wish, my "Best Case Scenario" under the circumstances, is this:

The brakes were just pulled recently on a fourth Bourne movie. It being Universal's primary franchise right now, word was that they were looking for other potential franchise films to fill the void in their Summer 2011 schedule Bourne has created. This is apparently at least partially behind the recent movement on another Riddick movie. But it seems to me, this may be just the perfect time to bring back Serenity - as the fanbase has only grown since.

Highly unlikely... but it's what I'm hoping for.

Here's my wish list:

Movies or mini-series - Serenity/Firefly by Universal or SyFy Channel.

or

Complete Book's backstory Sheperd Tales

or

Movies not involving our heroes

Probability of any of this happening:

Serenity 2 - Approx. 40% Nathan has a following among non-Browncoats because of Castle. He also has more recognition and star-power. People in general really like him and that translates into box office.

Summer also has a following among non-Browncoats as well. Her popularity is definitely on the uptick. Her appearence on TBBT was buzzworthy.

Adam's success on Chuck, Morena's V, Alan on V and Dollhouse have given our BDH some exposure and could translate/crossover into movies.

The trick is to get Universal to pull the trigger on putting together a package that would allow everyone to win. The studio knows these guys have a cult following and their mainstream popularity has grown in recent years.

Let's not forget Mr. Universe; his show Numbers is still going strong. Although technically not a BDH, he is a part of the overall FF family.
Prequel anyone?

The other mediums are more likely, but most especially the comic book or graphic novel of our fav preacher. 60%

Just a thought!

Kewl, OTB. After reading your post, I looked around, and damned if I didn't find it on Netflix! Oboyoboy, I'm in for some fun. Never even heard mention of it after it was gone, and I missed it something fierce. I didn't find out about Firefly until last year, so I didn't have that to compare it to (NOT that there's a comparison!). So I've got it coming--eight discs, O Boy! I owe you a thank you.

My bet is Buffy webisodes based on motion-comix. Or so I've heard...

Longer-term, more Dr. Horrbible isn't a stretch. I'd LOVE to see him finally do something more in the Buffyverse, but I'm not sure the rest of the world is "there" yet for more Firefly/Serenity stuff. Which is sad, really, 'cause it would be my very favorite stuff of his to see brought back.

I love the Buffy/Angel stuff, but I feel they got to tell their stories, while Firefly never really did.

Looks like the JonnyQuest/Causal ticket ain't quite a winner , being that you haven't quite brought that 'brighter tomorrow' to this discussion...

Lookie here , it was about ten years between the demise of classic Star Trek and the advent of the first Trek movie , and despite a relatively smallish splash being made by that picture , Folk carried on , persevered , and kept the faith in anticipation of many more Trek outings...

All that , without even the benefit of popular Internet...

Time is on our side , even if permaybehaps the economy isn't quite , yet...

It was also about 18 years between ROTJ and the Star Wars prequels , and a similar time elapsed between Indy3 and Indy '4'...

Then there's the Sherlock Holmes phenom ; a long while elapses between takes on that subject matter , but that doesn't deter anyone who's a fan...

All good thoughts , though I admit a SyFy aversion...Considering the shape that NBC/Universal is in right now , I don't feel that SyFy is best choice of home or future for Serenifly , though if it was monetized correctly , it could help them turn things around...

Here's an idea for a 'prequel' film :

UNIFICATION WAR

Lots of possibilities there , even for sequels , which would eventually lead back to the BDH's of the 'Verse...

A side note , Niki :

There's a FF/E2 connection , in that Rebecca Gayheart was originally cast as Inara , but she did not work out .

As much as I loved her on E2 , we really lucked out and got the 'right' Inara : Morena...

I also had loved Jessica Steen as Cpl. Jennifer 'Pilot' Chase from Capt. Power and The Soldiers Of The Future...She played the MD later on Earth2...

I'm right there with ya on every point, O2B, except one: The economy IS on our side. While everything else is in the shitter, Hollywood is on pace to have a GREAT year. When things get rough, people still see a night at the movie as an extravagance, but one they can afford, and escape from reality is never more important than during recessionary times.

I would hope and think that some bright young suit at Universal would realize that even better than a money-making movie would be a money-making FRANCHISE. Sure, the first one wasn't a blockbuster, but the second one means more money for the first, and so on, until you have a powerhouse franchise rolling in the dough.

The production landscape here in NM has changed a lot since Earth II shot here. We have three full production studios, plus an animation studio, in ABQ now. There are a lot of films that have shot around here in the last couple years. So now, not only do we have the scenery, but we have the facilities to say.... build another Serenity set.

Yeah, I'd expect Cowboys & Aliens to shoot here. Matter of fact, Robert Downey Jr. just finished a film here, so he's even used to the area.

Key differences here are that Trek had been running reruns in syndication for years, and had become a bit of a phenomenon based upon that. Even before Star Wars was a hit, and they decided to make TMP, Paramount had been working on a revival of the series (Phase II). And, though the popular narrative is that TMP was a bomb, and it certainly underperformed relative to expectations, it was a profitable film in it's theatrical release.

Sorry, but as much as I like Firefly, I'm not deluded enough to consider it a cultural phenom. And 15 episodes occasionally showing up on a niche cable channel out of hundreds available is simply not the same league as 3 years of episodes shown in reruns on one of only a handful of available channels. And no, Serenity was not profitable in it's theatrical run. On DVD yes, but not theatrical. Joss himself has confirmed this, if math isn't your thing.

Be realistic. Not only was your "marker" not taking the TV/Film landscape for what is is/was, it is also factually inaccurate. Hell, Riddick wasn't even a break-even movie, much less a hit. The WB doesn't even exist anymore.

You literally got pretty much everything wrong.

I was referring to the WB as a website (where it is still called the WB), which seems to be taking over the Firefly viewing rights from Hulu, either that, or they were the ones who promoted the episodes there in the first place.

My alternative to Chronicles of Riddick was to say Avatar, would probably have been a better choice.

My point was, though, even if I got some of the specific details wrong, there are some similarities here.

What defines a cultural phenomenon, anyway? Doesn't seem to be any set number of people who've seen the show. Firefly is at least an ascended meme, with references inserted into and acknowledged by the creators of a number of shows the nine main cast members have been part of, and a few that they haven't.

And consider all the awards and voting poll-ins that Firefly has won since it's cancellation and even since the movie. Part of that's because browncoats are nuts, but another part of it is that there are so freaking MANY of us.

Good question, about what makes a phenom. Been involved in a lengthy discussion on that subject ir regards to Avatar.

I would say to be a cultural phenom, those who have never seen it should have a pretty good idea of what it is, and it generally becomes a part of the pop culture landscape. Firefly is close, getting there, but it's still more of a niche/cult property. After almost a decade, it still isn't nearly as well known as real cultural phenoms like Trek, Star Wars, X-Files, Buffy, Harry Potter or more recently (and unfortunately) Twilight. Hell, it's still less seen/known than something liked Charmed, which I would certainly not call a phenom.

And sure, there are similarities between Trek and Firefly - but they are surface similarities. And the landscape of the industry has changed so much in between that the similarities are virtually null. No matter how you shake it, a handful of reruns that are shown sporadically amongst hundreds of choices just isn't even in the same ballpark as what happened with Trek. Which has little to do with the quality of the show, and more to do with the realities of the industry now, but it is what it is nonetheless.

Polls are meaningless, because, as you said, Browncoats are nuts. Hell, the obsessive nature of Browncoats is becoming more well known that the show itself at this stage. But in relation to other fandoms.... no, there really aren't THAT many of us. Hell, I'm a Highlander fan - a franchise that has been a joke for most of it's existence, never could be considered a "phenom" despite 6 films and 3 TV series (and many regular mentions in other shows/movies), and hasn't produced anything of quality in at least a decade, and it still has a bigger fanbase.
