I'd rather win by fair means thanks all the same. If the site think we have cheated Firefly could be disqualified.

I agree. This kind of piling-on at tvshowsondvd.com got caught. Voting was stopped twice and votes were removed, to the embarrassment of the fans of Wonderfalls. If there's enough fan interest in Firefly -- and why shouldn't there be? -- then we should make enough of an impact. I don't think we need to chase Angel either.

I think 13% is pretty impressive, considering the relative audience sizes of the shows - that a show so few have had a chance to see should do so well might just turn some heads!

This isn't a contest we can win or a test we can cheat on.

It's about creating new fans. The only reason we should vote for "Firefly" on polls such as this is in the hopes that people ignorant of the show will glance at the poll, see the big numbers for 'Firefly', and get curious. The more fans we can create, the better the movie will do, and hopefully we can ensure our BDHs will be around for a long time.

Vote and vote OFTEN.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Tiger is correct. We must raise awareness about the show and convert as many new fans as we can.

As for the poll, here are the results as of 11:55 EST:

Firefly 13% 2062 votes

We are tied for 2nd place % wise w/ Farscape, though we have a mere 15 more votes than they do. We are well behind Angel though.

Huh, how long this poll been on?

FF 13%
Angel 30%
Sports Night 6%
F&G 6%
Boomtown 5%
Futurama 10%
Farscape 13%
The critic 2%
Dark Angel 8%
The Tick (Live) 2%

Need more browncoats.

But, to be honest, there are more Angel fans than FF fans. And FF is number 2 in ranking! (2076 for FF vs. 4675 for Angel) Need 3k votes to push FF over, assuming no one else votes significantly for Angel.

Well, right now we're beating Farscape for second place by only about 20 votes. I don't know if we'll catch up to Angel, but pulling a second sure isn't bad when one show is dominating the poll. Just get some more in there and we'll have a solid second place finish.

We're about 70 votes ahead of Farscape right now, and that's translating into a percentage point (we're at 13%, Farscape is at 12%).

Personally, I'd like to see a "fair" poll myself, just because I'm curious. I'm really confused what people like about Farscape (and yes, I saw the entire series on DVD). Do they get excited when Dargo fires his sword? Do they think the pale cat-chick is sexy? What?

Oh, and BTW, Borders had 3 copies and I lined them all up in front of the others. All in a prominent row.

......and now the poll is something about TV dads. So, Firefly ended up third? Oh, well. Hey, that's pretty good for a show that only aired, what?, 11 eps 2 years ago? I'm kinda proud.

Can't/won't speak for anyone else, but what I liked was the "back to SF basics" feel of Farscape.

I mean, looking at most SF (yes, even including Firefly), the SF elements are used as set-dressing. The stories are about individuals --about people, living in a "real" world.

Farscape had bits of that (the D'Argo/Chiana/Jothyn triangle, Aeryn/John, Crais and Scorpius' redemptions, etc), but it went back to "golden age" SF in a way that most shows don't. The aliens actually played a role by their alienness --especially in S4 when they got back to Earth and got a chance to comment outright (something that even original Trek could only do obliquely) on the problems/contradictions of human society.

Also, John Crichton was what every geek wishes he was. On one hand, he's a brilliant physicist (Farscape-1's wormhole-making engine was his own invention) and a sci-fi geek (he compares a planet to Dagobah, and recognizes a Star Trek TNG reference when it drops into his lap), but he's also the dopy star quarterback and "The Right Stuff"-style astronaut.

Thirdly, it belongs to that "alternate" school of SF.

See, when SF writers start out, we're told in no uncertain terms what we can and cannot do. We cannot write aliens. No matter how hard we try, we are simply not capable of describing anything outside the realm of human thought/experience. And even if we succeed, no one will want to read/hear/see it.

There are some who accept this, and go on to write brilliant character studies of humans living in a hostile world (Firefly), or of allegorical aliens manifesting from the human psyche (Star Trek), or archetypal myths playing out in space (Star Wars).

Then there are people like me, who take that "Law" as a direct challenge. We try to outdo each other with the most out-there, inhuman aliens we can create. We write first-person narratives from the perspective of a barnacle, and romances between species who are sexual cannibals, and stories of "gods" who are just really good programmers. . .

Typically, us "wierdos" end up working mostly in text and selling to pulp magazines. Eventually, we'll graduate to novels, and maybe manage to sell screenrights to someone who'll revise us into mediocrity and cast the latest Big Name to star. If we want to hit it big, we have to "streamline" our writing into what's "normal" and "interesting."

Farscape, to me, marks the first time any of "us" have managed to create a TV franchise.

When I first saw "Bad Timing," I didn't realize that the cancellation had caught them by surprise; I thought the out-of-the-blue cliffhanger was intentional. It was just such a perfect slap in the face to the "traditional" SF community. The two most human characters were gone, inexplicably. Everyone wanted to know more --the story was not over!

But there're no humans. Who wants to hear a story about a bunch of random aliens? The end.

Plus, I consider "Revenging Angel" (a.k.a. "The Looney Tunes Episode") to be equal to "Hush" (Buffy's silent ep), "Once More With Feeling" (the Buffical), and "Smile Time" (Muppet Angel) as some of television's greatest works of self-satirical art.
