Are weapons legal on the outsides of civilian ships in the 'Verse?

I'm just not sure how the Alliance would react to seeing duel laser-miniguns topside and rocket launchers on the wing tips of my ship.

What Would Mal do ?

got the impression from the series that a ship mounted weapon would bring certain Alliance determinations immediately down upon a civi ship, but don't know that it was ever said that it was illegal...just kinda made a ship's intentions more clear.

but that was part of the charm of Firefly story lines...the captain's cunning... his obvious decision that any gun he might could afford would still be no match against a properly outfitted Alliance vessel....so the brains over braun story lines come into play.. not to make Serenity into a "she" ship..but Joss has always had a self professed affinity for taking a petite lil teenage girl and pitting her again overpowering odds...super strong undead vamps, massive star cruisers loaded with attack fighters and large weapons kinda the same parralel.

Not exactly Firefly, but the way it's handled in Star Wars (under the Empire) is that each weapon must be individually-licensed, carries a separate tax, and can only be low-powered. Or you can devote heavy "donations" to the "custom inspectors' retirement fund" --but that doesn't tend to work on actual military inspectors (Vader's bribes are better than yours).

The Millennium Falcon, frex, was officially only outfitted with a couple of low-power quad turrets. And Han still ran into constant permit troubles in his pre-Rebellion days (permits issued on one planet may not be valid on another, database update errors, inspectors with a stick up their pigu, etc).

unofficially, those turrets were strong enough to blast a TIE fighter to scrap, there was a retractable anti-personnel cannon near the ramp (seen in ESB), and a pair of concealed military-grade concussion missile launchers between the bow mandibles. The Empire would've been very interested to hear about those.

Plus there's the practical problem of manufacturing/buying/carrying live rounds (not only are they a potential security risk, they take up space that can't be used for cargo, and they add weight --which means your engines have to work harder, which means more fuel).

Yep, but really an easier way to explain it is...

Try to mount a .50cal machinegun on your car, and see how much of a pain in the arse that'd be even if you *did* manage to do so legally.

It's possible, in some states, but you'd have the cops camping your rear bumper forever, which kinda defeats the purpose, or if it was for protection, renders it kind of unnecessary, yes ?

Gameswise, I play Freelancer Discovery, and the later versions *DO* have a Firefly class transport if you can find/afford it, and it *is* capable of mounting Lv3 Transport guns (and a pretty strong shield projector) - but the F-D Universe isn't a real nice place...

And should I catch you and your tasty cargo without proper escort without any official witnesses, my your diety of choice have mercy on ya.

Cause I won't.

well as far as my Star Wars knowladge go, TieĀ“s was not really that tough except for there speed that is(no shield except one Tie Class, that might only be known to those who has played the Game StarWars Rebellion) and they had no hyperdrive because as far as I remember the empire did not wish for pilots o be able to run away if/when they got scared
