I doubt anyone here has seen "The Prarie Home Companion Movie" but me an' Hubby. I cried like a baby and I don't do that. Hubby liked it and he's into macho movies. Hilarious, sad, poetic and quirky. I highly reccomend it.

Oh, and "Where The Red Fern Grows" always did get me....

I'm shocked! That brings the total number of people I know that have ever heard of PHC to ...two now? It's always nice to me to hear someone make fun of themselves and their religion and to get away with it so eloquently, and I love "the news from Lake Woebegone" and my kid even likes to listen to "Wait, wait- Don't tell me" Didn't get a chance to go to the live theater broadcast a while back, wanted to, though... I think I identified that movie with my dad's troubles... Hubby still plays the "Bad Jokes" song on YouTube as a pick-me-up sorta thang...

I've seen that one too actually.
With a cast like that, it was a no-brainer. Haven't seen it in a while though, might have to see if I can find it cheap on DVD!
Wonderful film.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I've mentioned this film on many threads over the years, here and on other forums, and it is still one of my favorites:

Of the ones already posted I'd agree with:

Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan - Is there a greater scifi death scene/funeral?
Pan's Labyrinth - So sad but so hopeful depending on your pov.
Up - It shows the greatness of Pixar films that they can get to you so early in a film.
Powder - Fantastic, very underrated film. Very moving.

I'll add:

E.T. - On my first viewing.
Switched At Birth - One of those true story movies. Got me when the Dad had to tell his daughter that she wasn't his daughter.
The Green Mile - Gets me every single time.

Oh, snap - I forgot "To Sir, With Love". I *LOVE* that movie!

You should really check out "Goodbye, Mr. Chips", too. Either the 1939 Robert Donat version or the later Peter O'Toole version - they're both fantastic. I prefer the later one myself, though.

And yes on Gump.

And Chris, I didn't hate Steel Magnolias. It's a chick-flick, sure, but I didn't hate it, and I expected to.

So, tell me Chris, are you depressed or something? I'm not being snarky... Just wondering, what with "pain and loss" threads and what seems like an inordinant amount of time dedicated to imaginary ship replicas? I don't know where you are but the last three days here have been gloriously sunny and 82*. Are you gettin' enough vitamin D, hon?

TRAVELER

Any film with war will naturally show very harsh situations. At times showing both the worst and best of mankind.
"The Thin Red Line"
"Twelve O'clock High"
"The Victors"
"The Purple Plain"

Life can throw some very hard knocks at you. Very few people escape having a hardship in their lives.

"A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" I am placing this at the top of this list because it is simply the most remarkable film I have ever seen.

"To Kill a Mockingbird"
"Missing"
"Memento"
"For Whom the Bell Tolls"
"Agnes of God"
"Cannery Row"
"Shane"
"The Searchers"
"Tender Mercies"

P.S. my husband didn't watch the movie with me.

I had the same reaction to The Big Red One. I watched it because Mark Hamill was in it, and I haven't seen it since it opened in the theatre. Realism is not in my comfort zone.

I have to add:

The Wrestler
Green Mile, one of my all-time favorites
and........

Going Places (French, 1974) I will not ever forget this film. Funny, erotic, irreverant and classic all rolled into one. Gerard Depardieu and Jeanne Moreau. They don't make 'em like that anymore.
