From Edward Norton's agent:

" Here are the facts : two months ago, Kevin called me and said he wanted Edward to reprise the role of Bruce Banner in The Avengers. He told me it would be his fantasy to bring Edward on stage with the rest of the cast at ComiCon and make it the event of the convention. When I said that Edward was definitely open to this idea, Kevin was very excited and we agreed that Edward should meet with Joss Whedon to discuss the project. Edward and Joss had a very good meeting (confirmed by Feige to me) at which Edward said he was enthusiastic at the prospect of being a part of the ensemble cast. Marvel subsequently made him a financial offer to be in the film and both sides started negotiating in good faith. This past Wednesday, after several weeks of civil, uncontentious discussions, but before we had come to terms on a deal, a representative from Marvel called to say they had decided to go in another direction with the part. This seemed to us to be a financial decision but, whatever the case, it is completely their prerogative, and we accepted their decision with no hard feelings.

We know a lot of fans have voiced their public disappointment with this result, but this is no excuse for Feige’s mean spirited, accusatory comments. Counter to what Kevin implies here, Edward was looking forward to the opportunity to work with Joss and the other actors in the Avengers cast, many of whom are personal friends of his. Feige’s statement is unprofessional, disingenuous and clearly defamatory. Mr. Norton talent, tireless work ethic and professional integrity deserve more respect, and so do Marvel’s fans.

nobody really knows whats going on here, it appears that Ed is not to helpful,..but (and I do like him) he is entitled to an opinion and some expectations of the whys and where-fors of his role. I think big egos are working overtime, BUT they could have worded it better. JMHO

I'm not siding with anyone in particular here, because what Kevin Feige did was completely unprofessional and cruel, but Edward Norton is notorious for being difficult to work with.

It seems like very often that we hear about him wanting to do script rewrites and film edits and have more control over a lot of things, and gets irritable when he doesn't get his way.

Now, I love Edward Norton, and I liked the Incredible Hulk, and for continuity's sake, I'd love to see him in the Avengers.
BUT.
He wasn't irreplaceable as the Hulk, in my opinion.
Not like Downey Jr, who now owns the role of Iron Man pretty much.

Honestly, I'm sure the studio and Joss loved Norton, he's a great actor, and he cares about the material, but ultimately, with their experience on the Incredible Hulk, this doesn't surprise me.

But lets wait and see, shall we?
I have faith in Joss.

Yeah, Bruce Banner is kinda generic anyway; I honestly didn't even really notice the recast between the first two.

Now, if they suddenly do something stupid like making Hulk grey, or something. . .

For all we know Joss wanted to go in a different direction. Maybe Ed thought the meeting went well and Joss felt the exact opposite.

All I know is if Joss is at the helm then I'll be there when the movie opens.

Gotta agree with Zeek. We haven't heard from Joss on the subject, maybe he wasn't that impressed with Norton, OR it could be that Banner won't have a huge role in the film, as opposed to Hulk, and so he didn't feel it was worth paying Norton's fee, or running the risk of having him try to take control.

Honestly, there are heaps of reasons it may've happened, but as long as Joss is at the helm, I'll be there.

I like Norton and all, but I really don't care in this case.

I like Edward Norton. Hell, I like Eric Bana, but if they can't get Bill Bixby, it's all a wash anyway.

Your username is rather appropriate if taken as a question.

I agree with what BigRichard and Zeek have said. We don't know all the facts.
Both Bana and Norton were good in their respective films, it's just that Norton ended up with the better film. Norton could be replaced by someone else. Maybe bring Bana back to play the newer version (not his original one).

Why I'm done with comic book movies....

Well, I'm not done with them, but after Wolverine, The Spirit, Catwoman and the like, I think I'll be a bit more choosy about what I waste my time on.

Incredible Hulk was excellent- and I NEVER expected Norton to come back, that movie was very self-contained, and team flicks are notoriously low on character development. Norton wants to ACT, not stand around until the CGI action takes over.
