I have noticed an ongoing trend in Hollywood. Every major studio usually has a young adult, or teen cast in major roles in most of their movies. I call it "the Twilight syndrome" studios trying to cash in on their biggest demographic the teens. But the thing is when I was 18, I watched movies with adults in the roles, and I loved them. Why can't todays generation do the same?
Here are some examples:
Wall Street 2-I admit I heard good things about this so I may see it..but Shia LEbouf?

Tron 2-A shocker. I thought this was only going to be about the Jeff Bridges character Flynn. Then I see it's about his son.

reboot of Spiderman with yes, younger people in the roles.

To all you teen and early 20 something actors
I say get some acting experience, come back in ten years and then you can take a lead role in a major motion picture.

A bit of the chicken and the egg situation. Yeah, when we were kids, there were more adult leads - but there were plenty of teen/young adult stars, too. And more adults went to the theatre then, so it made more sense to cater to them more heavily. This is not the case anymore.

And part of it is just you feeling your age. Wall Street is a good example. You talk about it's young lead, while apparently forgetting that the lead in the original was Charlie Sheen - who was younger at the time than LeBouf is in the sequel (22 v 24).

And some, you just have to accept some practicality. Tron 2 - an action film aimed at a young audience, just like the original - was never ever going to be greenlit with a senior citizen in the lead role. Just as they would not have cast Ernest Borgnine as the lead in the original.

A Spider-Man reboot makes sense on a few levels. For one, the original cast was asking for a lot, which makes the budget swell from the start. Plus, Spidey has always worked best as a metaphor for teen troubles, and doing that with a guy in his mid 30's is just silly.

Wait, you were shocked to find out that Tron: Legacy features Flynn's heir?
I think it looks interesting. Also, the actor playing Sam Flynn is 26, he's hardly a teenager.

CYBERSNARK

You say it yourself in the first post; it's demographics. Younger people have the disposable income (and younger people look better in various states of undress, which means you don't have to worry about things like scripts and plotting ).

There's also a bit of dramatic necessity to it, though; teenagers and young adults are dynamic. By the time a character is an "adult," he/she is considered to be "established" --they've either learned to work the System, become part of it, or been ejected from it. They inevitably end up as conservative figures (in the practical sense, not the political) or as resource-strapped "guiding hands." They either have too much to lose by actively bucking the system, or too little (strength, time, wealth, passion, etc) to make a difference. If they enter the field at all, it's after being dragged there by the more idealistic youngsters.

It's always the younger generation that wants to change things (and, more importantly, believes that they can). The younger characters are always the primary actors, because they are the ones who are still willing to take chances and upset the status quo.

This has been true as far back as the 80s (15-year-old Marty McFly), the 70s (18-year-old Luke Skywalker), and Elizabethan England (teenaged Romeo & Juliet).

The new actor will be 29 when the movie hits. If it does well at all we'll probably have a mid 30's spidey in the sequel.

It almost seems like they cast too old of an actor for this one. They should have shot for a very early 20's actor if they want him to be high school peter parker for a decent run of films.

Yup, I agree. Going with a guy that age seems rather daft.

Anton Yelchin would have been a good pick, I feel. Ah well....

The trend, as I remember it, began in the late 80s early 90s where you have H-wood churning out 90 minute features (something to do with fitting in more movies per movie complex in a given day), and appealing to the greatest/lowest common denominator - teenagers. The result was such classics as Back to the Future, Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Sixteen Candles, Weird Science, The Outsiders and Porky's.

It seems to me that for every 5 teen movies we get 1, maybe 2, adult or senior movie like: Space Cowboys and, more recently, The Expendables and Red are squeezed in. Now that I'm older - seniors rock (Helen Mirren is a hottie). K, maybe I went too far. Susan Sarandon, rrrrwwwooorrrr!

But you get it. Every demographic is a target. The movie-going public cried out for more family fare and we get - Marmaduke, Garfield, Cats and Dogs, and (heaven help us) Furry Vengence! But every once in a while H-wood throws us a bone - Wall-E, Up, The Incredibles, Mary Poppins, Wizard of Oz - you get the picture.

But I get your point - the same young faces appear (H-wood loves a sure thing - cha-ching!) over and over again. McLovin, Jonah Hill, Emma Stone, Miley Cyrus (not!) and Michael Cera (who starred in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, BTW a HI-larious movie, who is himself 22 years old).

Putting it into perspective - demographics rule in H-wood - teenagers have money to burn (are parents that desperate for peace and quiet, a little me time, the horizontal bop, D- All of the Above?) the 18-54 demographic is no longer the norm. It's been unofficially lowered to 13-54, especially when it comes to the movies - all bets are off. The Fix is in, the under-30 crowd is H-wood's new darling. For the rest of us, AARP is our only hope.

Obi Wan, work your magic!

I think there are a few issues and trends at work here.

I think one thing is that there are currently very few popular actors in their late 20s/early 30s, so it makes the divide much more obvious. Consider comedy, for example. It is dominated by dudes in their 40s these days (Vince Vaughn, Ben Stiller, Will Ferrell, Steve Carrell...). Yeah, there's Jonah Hill and Michael Cera, but they are often paired with older actors, and Cera, frankly, can't headline a movie.

So where are all the guys (and girls) in their late 20s/early 30s? They're on TV. Used to be that if you were a second-rate actor, you'd be on TV and HOPE that you'd get a coveted movie role and make the crossover. But for the past ten years or so, there's been a general trend where TV has improved and movie quality has gone down a bit. Not to seems like I'm stuck on comedy, but in another age, Jason Segel and John Krasinski would be in bad movie after bad movie... but instead, both have realized that TV is a better bet.

The rise of the WB and cable stations have also helped this trend. If you were an actor, would your rather be hopping from movie to movie, hoping for a hit, or settling for the lead role on a show that's going to run 4-7 years (or more)?

While I can definitely see the viewpoint of the original poster, I think a close look at the top grossing movies of 2010 to date tells the real story:

1-TOY STORY 3: Ensemble cast lead by a pair of old dudes
2-Alice in Wonderland: Old dude
3-Iron Man 2: Old dude
4-Twilight: Okay, sure...
5-Inception: Leo is closer to 40 than 30 these days.
6-Despicable Me: Another old dude animated movie.
7-Shrek Forever: ANOTHER animated movie headlined by an over-the-hill comedian! I'm sensing a trend!
8-How to Train Your Dragon: Well, okay, with all these animated movies, at least one of them has to have a young cast...
9-Karate Kid: A kid paired with an aging, 50+ action star.
10-Clash of the Titans: Male lead is in his 30s

The next ten tell the same story (some kids, but also many older, established actors).

Young actors ALWAYS get work (always have, always will) for a number of reasons. They're often nice to look at. They're cheaper than established actors. They lend an air of freshness... It's also the nature of the business: it's in the best interests of agents and managers to "discover" new talent.

Yes, there are many young folk in movies these days, but the same can be said of any given year, I think.

Rape “right-wing” females to create “multicolored descendants”, says French Doctor
tokyoroseinlalaland.blogspot.com/2015/12/france-native-french-are-not-recognised.html
Thierry Lecoquierre, a Medical Doctor from Le Havre in Upper Normandy, has been reported to the Council of Doctors for his article, which has now been deleted from the website.
His article titled “Impregnate the female of the National Front” says this:
“Right wing women do not appear less mammal than other women, even if they have a bigger than average reptilian brain. As any woman, it is subject to hormonal moods. With a feature that ethnology confirms to us: she gets especially wet for rough men.
These female FN sympathizers certainly offer us a means to beat them. As each right-wing female appreciates the military and the macho and loathes feminist ideas, let’s play her game. Let’s take her at her own game, let’s take her and f*** her.
Since they give us the recipes for crossbreeding their pale race, use it against her side. Let’s sexually overcome these stupid right wing females, for the survival of a smiling humanity. Because they are stupid and easily tricked, like game going to the hunter, things should be easier. Let’s create a curly descent (not German mind you!) let’s curlify this “other-hating” frightened France.”
Refusing the advances of family planning, every pregnancy will result in a little half-breed or a mongrel, an artist that tomorrow she will eventually like.
Blacks, Negroes, gooks, Jews, leftists, gypsies, disabled, Freemasons and even my gay friends in solidarity: bring up your hard d**ks! Let our consciences sleep under the pillow, and jump on the right-wing pussies offered — unfortunately sometimes pretty! Hail to a vast altruistic copulation! Provide multicolored descendants to the sinking country of France.
“With one goal: kill right-wing poison in the egg.”
