We can all agree here, I think, that FF/Serenity is the ultimate in mashed-genre westerns.
But here are some others:
Six String Samurai
Westworld
Outland
They Live (think about it- it fits all the western standards)
Battle Beyond The Stars (hehheh)
High Plains Drifter
Seraphim Falls
Shanghai Noon
Yojimbo
They Call Me Trinity
"Spectre Of The Gun" (Trek TOS ep)
And, of course-
The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr.

Anyone see Sukiyaki Western Django? Reviews seem kinda *meh*

And, the regular westerns:

The Good the Bad & the Ugly
Nevada Smith
The Searchers
The Quick & the Dead

I'm with you. The TV series was excellent. I got all excited to see the movie and was horribly disappointed. I'm a fan of both Will Smith and Kevin Kline (A Fish Called Wanda: HI-larious) but it SUCKED big time.

Seraphim Falls was definitely a classic that slipped under the radar when it was released. Sort of like Serenity...

If you haven't seen Seraphim Falls, it's well worth a rental.

And, it's too violent for Wife or Sonisall.
I saw the cover & blind bought it based on the stars. It was used, so, not so much coin. I'm so glad I got it. And it's so beautifully photographed...

Oh so you want to talk great and strange, well here goes one that I plum fergot about (speaking in the vernacular of the era). These fellers wer plum loco:

Jim Jamrusch's Dead Man - Johnny Depp, John Hurt, Lance Henrikson, Gabriel Byrne and (wait for it) Iggy Pop. Now how's that for a weird western.

I heard of Seraphim Falls, but wasn't much interested to catch it in the theater. I will put it on my Netflix list.

Although I've not seen it I heard Ravenous (1999) was a weirdly strange western with Guy Pearce and Robert Carlisle.

But the weirdest of all, the mother of all weird westerns stands, El Topo (1970). I saw this film in a Greenwich Village arthouse theater and I was dumbfounded that's how strange this movie was. Brilliantly strange, powerful, gross yet unforgetable. It made a Clockwork Orange look like a kindergarten fable. Now that's strange.

I'm very late getting to this thread but I saw this on TV shortly after you first recommended it and it was really great. Top notch acting from the two leads and a plot that gradually gives away what is really going on. The ending was definitely strange and I wasn't too sure if ut really fitted with the rest of the movie but I did like it, especially it's play on a name for Angelica Hustons character.

Not quite scifi but I've always kind of liked Grim Praerie Tales. Kind of Twilight Zone meets the wild west. Brad Dourif and the great James Earl Jones swap scary campfire stories. Its not a great movie but I like it.

North Star - an episode from Season 3 of Enterprise. The crew finds humans on a remote planet living in frontier 1870's conditions. A departure from the Season 3 story arc, but a very good episode, with lasers and six-shooters blazing away.

Speaking of weird and strange westerns, does anyone remember the tv western that came on about the same time as Brisco County, Jr. (circa 1990-3) but was much better? I can't even remember who starred in it or the name, but I do remember that the show had lots of ghosts and men who carried their heads under their arms. Does that ring a bell with anyone? I'd love to watch it again and can't find it without a name.
