I've done this "poll" on other boards, so I figured I'd do it here too.

Which do you prefer?

River with those combat boots, or River going barefoot?

I pick River barefoot.

FTR, the other times I've posted this poll, on other site, "River barefoot" has gotten more votes.

I mostly was looking for a REAL place to chat with Firefly fans (IMDB doesn't cut the mustard). So I did a search.

I discovered Firefly a few months ago thanks to some folks at TV Tropes.

I've also developed a bit of a crush on Summer Glau. I suppose I should get in line.

As for your poll, I prefer barefoot River. To me it gives her more of a childlike innocence that belies the programmed assassin the Alliance made her into. That and Summer does have some pretty feet.

That's a good site. The forums, or do you edit mostly? I mostly edit, I like to pretend I'm sneaky by lurking a lot and hiding behind anonymity even though before tvtropes required you to get known it still showed your IP address. I'm weird that way.

Anyway, welcome. :) Picked up some swag yet? Everyone recommends the visual companion books, you might like the comics, and QMx sells some nifty Firefly stuff like maps of the verse and ship models that Joss advised on.

Well, here's another for the 'not in that way' camp, but her feet are gorgeous, and however strong Joss' inherent powers of rationalization (quite strong), they do at least work with the story.

I agree with Browncoat1--having her barefoot in all that beat up metal of the ship really sets her apart with an almost impractical (but oddly very physical) otherworldliness. Helps her character be suggested visually since she gets so few direct lines.

The boots seem like an almost joking overcompensation, intended to emphasize the same thing in the opposite way. ["Ah, the pitter patter of little feet in gigantic combat boots"] Don't mind me, but I see lots of psychology on this show in the costume department.

EDIT: Two's clearly a visual person.

My theory as to why she wore boots is this: It's all or nothing for her. She will either wear extremely practical shoes, or she won't wear any. I can't even imagine river in heels. It just wouldn't make any sense to her.

As for my vote, I say boots. She has very pretty feet, yes. But no one pulls off those combat boots like Summer Glau.

However River wants at any given time.. I worry a little about her stepping on something sharp when she runs around the cargo bay barefoot, but she likes being barefoot and we haven't had any incidents yet so I think its fine that Simon lets her.

You guys talk about River in ways that feel icky to me. But everyone has the right to their opinion, I'm glad River is a ficticious charactor right now though, so opinions don't turn into actions.

I know what you mean about the picture of River barefoot is exaggerated, I guess because it is a poignant picture that sticks with the viewer.
