There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

Today marks the eight year anniversary of the final FOX broadcast for Firefly. Most are surely aware, but for any noobs around that don't know, that last broadcast was the pilot episode, "Serenity," which the network promoted as an "origin special."

And guess what? We're still holding, Mal.

Browncoats will follow the ennobling example of Lieutenant Hiroo Onoda, who continued fighting WWII on the Philippine island of Lubang until 9 March 1974 - nearly 29 years after the end of the war.

Humanitarian missions were sent to Lubang to try to persuade Lieutenant Onoda and his companions that the war really was over, but they would have none of it. Even today, Hiroo Onoda insists they believed the missions were enemy tricks designed to lower their guard. As a soldier, he knew it was his duty, without any orders to the contrary, to keep on fighting. - www.bbc.co.uk/history/worldwars/wwtwo/japan_no_surrender_01.shtml

To my knowledge Fox has the TV rights until 2012. It has been my hope that Universal, or some brave studio would have bought those rights by now and continue the story but.............

It is my belief that the strategy may be to hold out until those rights expire and a studio can then pick it up for a song. A reboot is not out of the question, look at Star Trek.

We hold........until the Captain comes back.

It's always been my hope that when 20th Century Fox's rights to Firefly expire in 2012 and revert to Joss that he will produce more Firefly independently... a la Dr. Horrible.

As technology and distribution becomes less expensive and available, I can envision Joss having his own studio and being free from studios second guessing him. He could start out by creating a kind of pay per view web based Firefly mini series, and also sell DVDs with extra goodies too. As the success of this grows, and it will, then bigger productions can be made.

We already know that Joss and the cast would love to get together again and create more Firefly... the problem so far has been the rights being held by studios who don't want to put money into a project they don't see making a profit. We know better... it just has to be done right.

And yes... we hold, until the Captain comes back.

An odd coincidence: at the Shiloh Horse Rescue, Jill's sweet old horse Serenity died the same day.

Maybe someday she'll name one of the rescues "Firefly".

I love Firefly/Serenity too but, isn't Hiroo Onada's actions rather pathetic? Even Mal knew when the war was over eg. "War's over. Now we're all just folk." And no, I don't really see his later decision to misbehave a continuation of the war.

As Joss said of the cancelled show:"When does love become necrophilia?"

I like being Browncoat "folks". The war may be over, but I like being here and a part of a community that does so much good for others.

Who knows what will happen. Firefly could get rebooted, Mr. Whedon could get the rights as 11th Hour says and do something like Dr. Horrible with it. It may not come back at all. The original and only is pretty damn good. Good enough to satisfy me if there is never any more.

I'm willing to hang out and see what happens here with friends. No place I'd rather be. :)

I am up for that too! I'm here after all and am damned glad to be! :) And I hope Joss can continue the story on film one day soon.

I think I just balked at holding up a soldier of Imperial Japan as an "ennobling example" or in any way likening Firefly fans to them. I doubt you would find many Chinese, Koreans or others in that part of the world who would have a high opinion of the Imperial Japanese army. Not to mention the ghosts of the thousands of POW's who died at the hands of their Japanese captors. I had family who fought those bastards. I'm not up for giving any moral credit to them, the Fascists or the Nazis of that war.

I am a leaf on the wind. Watch how I soar.

I think that is the greatest testament to the longevity of Firefly, other then You cant' stop the signal. My Firefly Fandom is quite new, and I didn't watch the series (all 14 eps in a row) until christmas eve, and then watched Serenity the next day. This is not a story that is complete. Nor is it one that can be silenced. How many shows have had a movie sequel after only half a season before being cancelled? Only one: Firefly. It's been 8 years since the show went off the air, and 5 since Serenity was released, but new merchandise and stories keep coming from the 'Verse, both licensed and fan made. This thang aint goin' nowhere no time soon :)

I like the way you think! I sure hope you are right and that this is exactly what happens. I'd be happy to pony up my coin for a pay per view web based series, dvds, or whatever other ingenious way Joss comes up with to continue the story.

To be fair, Police Squad only had 3 of 6 episodes aired and it spawned the Naked Gun Trilogy.

That would be pretty cool. I'd settle for a continuation of the series in CGI like they did with Starship Troopers.

I'd be cool with a live action revival with mostly new actors. And by that I mean they would play new characters from the 'Verse.

I'd love to know more about the rights reversion situation, but if it does happen, I expect the best way to produce more of the show might be to make a number of modestly-budgeted movie-length stand-alone productions. This way, cast and crew currently on other series television could participate while on hiatus and you'd have "event" tv stories that could be sold to cable/on-demand/iTunes and also be released as stand-alone DVDs/Blu-rays. They could even do a limited theatrical release for fun and awards qualification.

we're holding, all right. I'm settling in for the long term-- remember, it took 18 years for original Trek.

It may take until some kid whose parents were Browncoats grows up and becomes a suit at a studio, and remembers seeing this as a kid can greenlight more, but sooner or later somebody will see a chance to make some bucks outta this crappy old boat, and then it'll happen.

Worse gose than Firefly has been made into money making sequels...
