My interest would certainly be diminished, and I would be very skeptical.... but I'd still give it a shot and judge from there.

Yeah I think it would be basically like the new Buffy movie. I don't hate the idea but I don't have any added interest in it over any other movie.

Sorry, but don't see spending hard earned money and energy to try to revive a dead show. Whedon banked on his Buffy fame and lost. America wasn't ready for a sci-fi with horses! Fox was to blame as well. No matter how much you pray to Buddha for that "plastic rocket" it isn't going to happen. This obsession bordering on a cult like devotion to a GD TV show isn't going to help you either. That is why America is morally and ethically bankrupt. To many people live their lives through their tv. Yeah I said it.

So... don't.

The ones who are organizing this (anonymous, so maybe still slightly shif-tay) aren't collecting money yet, and won't until they hear from Nathan Fillion, Joss Whedon, Tim Minear - anyone who might officially want to do this. If the campaign falls down, I'll be the first to cut this off.

Do NOT get me started on Fox. However, considering 23,000 people have joined the Facebook page for Help Nathan buy Firefly - since it started on Monday - some small part of America and possibly the world is definitely ready.

Ooh... get all those folks together into a stadium and get them all chanting "Browncoat" - BETTER!! Have each one record it, put it together on YouTube... It would follow the general application of this campaign.

But it IS a cult TV series. Read anything anywhere and the word "cult" will come up sooner or later.

Whoa, turn down the teapot, dude. I think it's enough we're talking about this. Politics and the moral and ethical stand of Americans is a topic for another thread - by virtue of the potential sheer volume.

My education's just fine, thanks. I got the student loans to prove it... oh, wait, was that your signature quote?

So you're quoting a cult TV series that doesn't stand a tinker's damn of being revived, posting with one of Universal's images of the character played by the man who allegedly started all this with a random comment.

Does that qualify as ironical? I have trouble differentiating what is and is otherwise just coincidence.

Malcolm Reynolds, a real Browncoat, would be hard, cynical, and contemptuous toward FOX. He would not want his fans to be soft-headed. He might act something like this:

Did you see the Firefly owner's tweet? @Rupert_Murdoch: You can take the sky from me - for a price.

There was no mention in his following tweets of how much Rupert would charge the fans for the copyright. Presumably, the higher the fan enthusiasm, the higher the price, with the sky being no limit. You know what happens when trusting fans match wits against Rupert Murdoch? He will set you adrift without fuel and air. If you can't keep secret how much money you raise, he will take every cent, leaving you with nothing to make the show after you buy the rights from him.

No mention, huh? Hmmm... So maybe his price is a share in the future endeavor. Presumably, he could be convinced to almost give it up if he thinks he can make more coin by doing it.

Which means our BDHs running the risk of making Firefly with the Devil in their midst.

The amount of coin the Devil, Rupert Murdoch, will charge is exactly equal to the amount of money he knows you have. The only possible way for there to be any money left to make the new Firefly is if the Devil does not know how much you raised. Gathering the money publicly gives the Devil complete, absolute, unbreakable power over you. It's not personal; it's business.

There is another way, a better way. Once he wins the lottery, Nathan Fillion could cut a deal with the Devil. If Rupert Murdoch doesn't accept Nathan's final offer for Firefly rights, Nathan could threaten him, Captain Reynolds style: “With the cash you're turning down, I figure I'll buy a statue of myself, Rupert. Monumentally big and situated in front of the place you were born in Australia. It will be me dressed as Capt. Mal and you, the Devil, kissing my ass.” It's not business; it's personal.

At that point, the Devil might realize that the Captain will walk away from any deal with too high a price. The Devil will not take all the money, leaving nothing to make new Firefly.

... fully loaded, safety off...

Yemen, Egypt, Libya... Firefly... it's all doable. You never know when that last straw is going to drop into place. I went to cnn.com yesterday and saw the second mention of this campaign on their front page - that's a lot of eyeballs. And then last night I heard Castle's mom say she was going to a Serenity Spa - crazy fun. Has any other canceled show gotten this much attention? It's almost more well known now for being canceled than anything else. I'd think it may reach a tipping point soon where so many people have heard about it and are really really really curious. Someone's going to bring it back to tv in some form - I have no doubt. In a funny, fitting way, it's getting treated like an old shoe and bounced around and mostly known on the fringes of regular society fits the show and crew perfectly.

Golly, you must be fun at parties.

If you find this fandom so upsetting.... what the fuck are you doing here anyway?

Sure, pining for a TV show might not be the most effective use of time. But bitching about people talking about a show is several magnitudes below worthless.

You really think Murdoch gives a flip about the show one way or the other? I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't even know what it was.

He does know. He even watches his own network. I know that's hard to believe when he is so very, very busy and could easily pay a personal assistant to watch and write him a daily memo. “Is Rupert Murdoch Picking Shows for Fox?” - http://bit.ly/hQyjN0

Uh, yeah, did you read that?? It's about Murdoch maybe upping his involvement with the network NOW, since Chernin is gone. Now is not 8 years ago, where there was a full executive staff on hand.

It even says in there that the last time Murdoch had anything to do with programming was when he insisted that Fox air American Idol.... and that was 6 months before Firefly premiered.

Reading the article before posting it would be a wise notion in the future... Just FYI.

Yeah, I think that's the best thing about this. Fans wont be able to buy the property, that's a pipe dream. But the fans being vocal enough after 8 years, so much so that we make CNN and other outlets - well it might just show TPTB that there's some life left in it.

Channain, Storymark -- You'd be wise to be scared of FOX. Selling Firefly would be another opportunistic business deal for Rupert Murdoch, who has a long history of getting the upperhand. You knew that about Rupert from any biography. He'd negotiate through his FOX flunkey because he is a busy man, and he will take every cent Browncoats collect, leaving nothing for filming new Firefly.

And after, Rupert will be very sorry that his TV executive was too tough with the Browncoats, but a deal is a deal. As a kind gesture, he'll personally donate maybe $1,000 to CSTS and to Nathan's favorite charity to assuage our suspicions that we were robbed blind. Rupert's a gentleman and a great humanitarian. You'd know that if you read his newspapers.

For what it's worth, here's my take on it.

If people buy lottery tickets and send them to Nathan, he probably won't win the 300 million (or whatever the number was). A miracle occurs and he wins enough to buy the rights. A non-miracle occurs, Firefly still gets publicity. Finally, if any of those tickets win smaller amounts, he'll probably put the money into Kids Need to Read. That's good for kids.

Either way, I don't see it as a problem. If you look at it as something fun to do, then it will ultimately benefit Firefly, Nathan, or kids who need books, and those are three "causes" I don't mind doing a little something for.

Your mileage may vary.

They've already mentioned the DVD campaign that put the series out on the Navy ships - that was good for the troops.

Kids Need to Read, CSTS, and anything else the BDHs support could also get a boost from this.

Why sacrifice your firstborn to Rupert Murdoch (or FOX, should you not want to personalize a corporation) if the Firefly rights revert back to Mutant Enemy in 2013? That wasn't sarcasm. It's commonsense to know what you're buying.

Good on you Browncoat. Sorry, though, I'm not the wine maker my uncle was.

What I'm curious about is how do we know that happens automatically?

Every try to by a website domain that someone else has already purchased? When you buy it yourself initially it costs about $160 for the year. If a web domain broker buys a popular name first, they will make you pay at least $2500 if not more to buy it from them.

So do the rights revert back automatically, or is Joss Whedon getting an option to buy them?

Something else I know; a lot of us spent a lot of time hating Fox when Fox really didn't care. You, Two, need to chill it with the Rupert Hate.

Fear is the mind killer. Hate is the soul killer. Hate him and he has power over you. Going against something doesn't mean you have to hate it.

Fooled you.
For me, "Rupert Murdoch" is playing the same role as a villain on a scripted TV drama. He's no more a real villain to me than "Adelai Niska." The imaginary "Rupert Murdoch" character stands in place for soulless corporation Fox, giving Fox some personality. It is just dull business with Nielsen numbers flowing in, money flowing out. It is a lean, mean, canceling machine that is run separate from another part (name forgotten) of NewsCorp that actually produced Firefly. I'm lumping all the loosely connected pieces of NewsCorp into one fictional name: "Rupert Murdoch."

In real life, Murdoch is both a TV actor and a TV executive. He has a page at the internet movie database listing his voice work on the Simpsons, for heaven's sakes! He played a fictional character who just so happens to be named "Rupert Murdoch." No relation to the real Murdoch or to FOX. www.imdb.com/name/nm0613770/

Huh. Not bad. Turns out you have some skills after all. No sense of respect - really, at all, for the other Browncoats writing in here in earnest truth - but skills.

There's a company with a structure already in place for doing something like this:

http://declarationentertainment.com/reboot-firefly

Get enough people involved, and it'll work.

It follows that the scenario where Nathan insults "Rupert" during negotiations for Firefly rights does not amuse you, either. Therefore, this thread is dead for me. The adults are continuing their weighty discussions. I write no more.

Meet Two...

I've personally come to believe that he/she is rather crazy.

I don't know about crazy - speaking as someone who is. I'm trying to make a living as a graphic designer in an economy that wants it but doesn't want to pay for it.

Two...? I think the word here is LOONEY.

I'm trying to decide how un- I am about Two being done with my thread.

yeah, not so much.

Loony works....

And yes, I'm sure we are all heartbroken over Two's exit from the thread. Things shall never be the same...
