Apparently completely unaware of all the money browncoats have raised for Equality Now, this moron at movieline thinks the attempt to resurrect Firefly should be filed under the "don't you have something better to do" column.

The first comment is my personal favorite.

Why does the guy even care what browncoats do? He's probably just looking for something to whinge about, I guess he's wasting _his time.

You guys really don't think he has any sort of point? I kinda see where he's coming from. Heck I know one local browncoat who agrees and hasn't joined in with any of this campaign because of it.

Come on man if this whole thing is supposed to be putting Firefly in the spotlight and getting new people curious about the series, then we really don't need posts like that for new people to read. Can't we take the high road here?

I think he has about as much of a point as anyone who says, "couldn't you give that to charity, instead?" I think that about fancy cars, but it's still not my place tell people how to spend their money. If I had thousands of dollars to either buy a porche or give to a charity, I'd give it to charity in a second, but I couldn't care less about a car.

I could go around giving every extra cent I earn to charity and live my whole life in poverty, but instead I'd rather have a nice house, a computer and eat well. Does that make me a bad person? I doubt it.

I still give to charity, but I'm not a slave to it and I don't feel guilty every time I spend money, and let's face it, most of what we spend money on isn't necessary. Food, clothing, and shelter are the bare basics and yet here we all are on the internet which takes a lot of things that aren't necessary to our survival. That money could have gone to charity.

I look at it like this: what is having Firefly come back actually worth to me in money? My answer is that Firefly is worth more than anything currently on Television. So I'd be willing to give more than a year's worth of cable bills to get Firefly back. Hell, I'd even say it's worth what I pay for netflix in a year on top of that. So that's the entertainment portion of my budget. Hands off charity.

I'm kinda poor at the moment, not long out of college as it were, so my charitable contributions come in the form of labor. I volunteer with the local schools and at the center for the arts. I'm not sure if how I contribute will change when my finances improve. It's nice to see my contributions actually doing something and if I send money somewhere, how do I really know it's being put to good use?

I resent anyone telling me how I should be spending my limited resources. IMO volunteering your time is far more noble than throwing money at a problem anyway.

To me the difference is it's not just buying a fancy car. It would be more like paying to design the car and then buy it as well. It's taking something you might normally do and then finding a way to spend even more money on it.

So, let's say Bill Gates loves his Cadillac, but he wants it to have a different door handle. So, he buys the entire company to make them change the design. Now he can buy the Cadillac with the door handle he likes. That seems like excessive spending.

That's where I think the difference comes into play at least.

ANTHONYT

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

Your money is for the acquisition of things you need and want, just like everyone's money.

Browncoats tend to be a generous lot, shelling out to various charities. We even sent one of our own to the gulf to help in environmental efforts- a spontaneous outpouring of generosity and caring during a national crisis.

If, at the end of the day, Browncoats are prepared to apportion a small percentage of their income towards a piece of entertainment they enjoy, it would be selfish and wrong to tell them they shouldn't do that.

I don't see how you could possibly call that selfish. What's selfish about it?

Wrong in this case is totally subjective and open to debate. To me I don't see it as wrong to state his opinion that there are better causes for that money. Each browncoat can either choose to agree or disagree. Yes, some might take offense, but that's also their choice.

Not selfish, as you'd gain nothing from it. Presumptuous, perhaps.

I think we're pretty much in agreement at this point, though I had a professor who would call it "violent agreement." We're just splitting hairs. Presumptuous vs selfish.

However, by what you said above, Zeek, is it permissible for me to get offended when I see someone driving a fancy car because I view that as a waste of money? Shouldn't I mind my own business and let people make whatever choices they see fit as long as they don't impinge upon my own freedom? Therefore, this obviously non-browncoat should shut the hell up and let us do what we want. Eh?

I think that goes to splitting hairs like you said before. If you're talking about what's rude then yeah maybe he should shut up. If you're talking about freedom of speech then he can say whatever he likes. If he doesn't like what the browncoats are doing then he has every right to speak his mind on his blog.

There's a pretty decent chance that he'll influence somebody to give more to charity. So, if it's a little rude but accomplishes his goal then I can't really blame the guy.

Perhaps, but the whole campaign to buy the show's rights was a bit reality-challenged to begin with.

Why would that be?

I don't see how liking a show, makes one disconnected from reality. Thinking a bunch of fans can band together and raise millions to buy TV rights from a network with no interest in selling them... a slightly different scale.

I'm sure people said the same thing a few years ago when a bunch of fans were trying to buy enough DVDs to convince someone to make a movie out of a TV show cancelled half way through its first season.

Well then, that person would be a bit ill-informed, as the movie was greenlit before the series hit DVD.

Not that you even tried to answer the question... but anyway.
