io9.com has been having the March Movie Madness and they are down to the final showdown. The final two contenders are Empire Strikes Back vs Serenity.

The truth is, I'm not a huge Star Wars fan. But Empire is a brilliant movie. If it had been Blade Runner vs Serenity, I would have voted Blade Runner (and it was exactly that match up and serenity won). In this match up I am definitely voting Serenity. If you want to vote (if you haven't already heard about it) http://io9.com/#!5789509/io9-march-movie-madness-the-final-showdown-em

Empire, easy.

Serenity

All those star wars fanbois are weakened by dreadful prequels. The secret truth being that there was no secret truth, or at least, a pretty dumb one. That kills your mystery.

Serenity. I can (and do) watch that movie over and over. I never get tired of it. It's deeper than Empire, better acted, and just as viscerally entertaining.

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

Honestly, this is a tough one for me. They've both been my favorite movie before, so I don't know if I can chose between them. The prequels did indeed damage Star Wars quite badly, but Empire is still good on its own, and by far the best Star Wars movie. They both make me absolutely giddy with delight... I might not be able to vote on this one. I had no qualms voting for Serenity over anything else it came up against and no qualms about voting for Empire over everything else, but I just don't know if I can pick between the two.
...Serenity won't win, of course. There's no way. I might give it my vote just to keep it from being utterly thrashed, but I really can't say that one is better than the other. I really can't.

What reason had proved best ceased to look absurd to the eye, which shows how idle it is to think anything ridiculous except what is wrong.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I have no problem voting for Serenity this time. Even the good Star Wars films are mostly flash with little substance.

Gotta say I agree with that. It's really no contest in my mind. Empire is a classic that set the bar in a lot of ways. Serenity is good and all but it didn't up the ante at all IMO.

My two favourite sci-fi films are up against each other! It's a tough call but ultimatley I'd go Serenity. It's no fault of Empire Strikes Back, but it's inevitable cliff hanger ending means it always feels incomplete.

I did my research, carefully judging the two movies and voted for Serenity after considering The Empire Strikes Back parody by The Family Guy.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Agreed. While the original SW trilogy was good, for me it just doesn't hold up as well as Serenity.

Lucas lost all cred with Ewoks, Jar Jar and Han shooting second! Lucas is a fat has-been. Star wars was fantasy. Serenity is Sci-Fi. I mean Serenity with the possible exception of Terra forming... is scientifically plausable. No aliens, light sabers and the corny force!
Serenity for the win!

Yep, one is a bona fide classic of cinema, that has connected with millions upon millions. The other is a pretty decent flick, based on a great series.... but it's not ever going to have the impact of the former.

Well, for better or worse, it's over, and SERENITY won.

Having grown up with the original Star Wars trilogy, I know how much of a classic it is and how much impact Lucas had on every aspect of cinema, and, indeed, society.

On the other hand, SERENITY won, and this time, a link to the io9 poll was posted on theforce.net (which I think is one of the biggest Star Wars sites around). While I think earlier rounds can potentially be attributed to Browncoat mobilization, this time, it was a fair fight.

Does that make SERENITY the best sci fi movie of all time? Maybe not. But I think it might mean it's got the best fans.
