Is it bad that what she said made perfect sense to me?

Just watched the first episode of the new season of Dr Who, and one of the guest stars is Mark Sheppard. He might be doing an American accent, but all we need him to do is say 'shiny' and the 'verse is complete!

That's him - I wonder if the character name, Canton, was a little tip of the hat.

I'll take it as a little wink, since my mind always goes there when I hear "Canton." It can't not.

Shiny!

I stopped watching "Dr Who" when Rose left...or was save, (what ever) I haven't seen this new one yet.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

And did you notice that William Morgan Sheppard, Mark's father, played the older version of the character?

Shiny indeed!

I kinda thought I recognised the older version but it wasn't until I saw Confidential and they mentioned that it was his Dad that it knew that. Shows (again) what a decent guy Mark is. Instead of all the fuss of the ageing makeup he just asked his Dad to come along.

The actual episode definitely threw me a few curve balls. Much darker in tone than usual.

As River would say 'spoilers' from this episode.

Moffatt stated in Confidential that there are a lot of clues in this episode to the rest of the series. I wonder if one of them is that we see an older version of both the Doctor and Canton. Could this be a clue to the theory that River and Amy are one and the same? It's not a theory I subscribe to but with DW you have to consider everything. Or of course she could be a regeneration of someone closer, if you know the title of an upcoming episode.
And I really like the whole thing of River's life going one way and the Doctor's going the other with us seeing his point of view. I noticed that the older version had a blue diary which leads me to think that River is definitely a companion of his after Amy + Rory aren't travelling with him any more. We now know (with the current timeline) that it happens during this 200 year gap and that's a lot of time to fill.

Looking forward to seeing the resolution of River's story and how it fits in to the whole mythology.

A good, dark start to the new series which has left me wanting more. As usual.

The style seemed very different and more modern - including camerawork and acting - not necessarily bad, as long as they don't alienate their core audience of UK kids in order to pitch it as an adult show for the US (I notice it airs at 9pm in the US rather than 6pm in the UK which would imply a different audience - of course the US has all that time zone nastiness to cope with...).

Its nice to see Mr Moffat indulging himself with wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey plots: in the past, Who has tended to just treat time travel as a way of having an adventure in the past/future.

My money is currently on River = Amy's daughter (but might not know that yet), and that its Amy in the spacesuit at the beginning doing the dirty deed.
The idea that River is Mrs Who has been hinted at so strongly that its probably a red herring. Likewise, its been so strongly hinted that River is in jail for murdering the Doctor that I doubt that. Perhaps River decides to take the rap for mummy?

I wondered whether River *was* the Doctor but, if so, her speech in the last episode would be just too creepy and narcissistic.

But hey, "Who will have been going to have shot the Doctor" is a lot better than "Who shot JR"!

Meanwhile, Badger popping up with the name of "Canton", a character called "River" - not to mention the "Chinese space market" scene a couple of series back - hmm.

I agree.
I loved it at the beginning of The Big Bang after we've waited a week wondering how all this could get sorted and then....the Doctor just pops up and tells Rory to release him thereby allowing the Doctor to travel back later and tell Rory how to release him. Great stuff. It does seem like this Doctor is more willing to change timelines, including his own. It was something Tennants Doctor wouldn't do and when he did he realised what a monster he could become. This Doctor seems to have taken some of that on board and it'll be interesting to see if it plays out at all.

And regarding your spoiler...
My spoiler reply...

I never once considered her to be the Doctor and have never gone with the idea of of the Doctor regenerating as a female. It's been clear enough over the many years that Gallifreyans are seperate male and females, just like humans.
The same goes for her being the Doctors wife. It was my first thought but when they are in the forest the Doctor asks her what she did and she replies that she killed a very important man and the Doctor replies "Who?" That's a great use of of classic line but it also screams 'RED HERRING' as the Doctor would be the 'Who'.

But I do like the idea of her being Amy's daughter and it's not something I had thought of. I had put Amy being sick down to the side effects of the mind wiping. River seemed to be feeling the same way. Which (thinking about it now) may be a subtle connection between the two characters because I don't think Rory felt sick (not sure though).

As for the spaceman/little girl I don't think that it is Amy. I don't have a real idea of who it could be, just guesses. The future Doctor obviously knows who it is but it all depends on whether it's the same person in the desert suit as the little girl we see in 1969. Could the little girl be Amy's daughter from the future who is trapped? Maybe the future Doctor fails to save her so he sets all these events in motion to save her and himself from the past? Or it could just be a character we haven't met yet.

Early days yet, on Moffats track record there's no real chance of working it all out now except by lucky guess.

Really looking forward to the conclusion of the two parter and the questions it will raise.
