Just wondering what you all think about that?

Do you think Joss has it in him to create something that's as good as Firefly or even better than Firefly?

Is it possible!?

Would you want anything he does to even be better than Firefly..?

Hey Som,

Yes, I think he definitely has the potential in him and as much as I love FF I want everything else he does to be better. He is a great guy who appreciates his fans and he seems to get 'it', whatever 'it' may be so I want more great TV and more great movies from him. If they are better than FF then so be it. I was a Joss fan before FF and will be long after my UltraHD Full Immersion Holographic Firefly boxset has worn out.

He has created some of my favourite shows with Firefly, Buffy, Angel and Dr Horrible (and I really don't like muscials). The original Buffy movie was a great idea (as proven by the TV show) but just got screwed up by the folks who actually made it. Even Dollhouse had, for all it's problems and forced changes etc, a great idea at it's core that could have gone somewhere.

As to whether it would ever get to a stage where we can see it, really appreciate and watch it over an extended period (i.e. more than half a season) then that depends on how his career goes. If The Avengers becomes a really big hit he may stick to making movies and if he's successful then he may not return to TV, at least for the forseeable future. Or he may do something like JJ Abrams and set shows up then let others run them whilst he continues to direct and write. Who knows at this stage, I doubt if even Joss knows.

Which ever way he goes I think we'll continue to see great ideas from him, some more great than others, and some that may not work but the potential is there within him for further greatness. Possibly Firefly beating greatness as well. The Avengers is a big stepping stone for him that may very well shape the rest of his career. Only time will tell.

Hey Lwaves.

Yeah I'd like to think he can do it too.

However there are often strange things at work with creativity and I wonder if he is quite as hungry these days. I only say that after reading an interview with John Carpenter. Carpenter basically said that after a while he just relaxed about the whole endeavour of making films and how much more tired he'd be with every new film he undertook. And indeed when he did begin a new project how much harder it was everytime to get through it.

I hope this Avengers project goes well for Joss because it's a big project. Lots of well established actors, high expectation and even worse a marketing machine. I'd imagine the press junkets alone are enough to wear a man down.

However if it goes well this could be the turning point for Joss and maybe, just maybe his clout could rise and as you say he could wield the kind of influence on the industry that J.J. has.

Let's hope eh?

Personally I think Joss has something incredible lined up for us all...

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

Joss certainly has the talent to create many more great shows, whether they are on the big or small screen. However, I don't think you can underestimate the crippling blow of the Firefly cancellation and what that meant to his self-esteem and enthusiasm. I doubt he has fully recovered from it, but when he does...watch out. Great things ahead.

Grrrr....

I had a pretty lengthy reply that seems to have disappeared. A shorter version:

Does Joss have the ability to produce something as great as FIREFLY again? Absoultely. Will he? I wouldn't put money on it.

FIREFLY was the result of a unique combo of factors, which include:

1) Joss was at the top of his game as a writer and creator (in part, because he was using those skills every day on BUFFY and ANGEL)

2) Joss LOVED FIREFLY (and likely will never love a show as much again, after what happened)

3) FIREFLY was fueled by Joss's confidence (again, post-FIREFLY, I think there will always be a caution there that wasn't there before)

Doesn't mean Joss won't create other great stuff (DR HORRIBLE has already shown that) or that there won't be a DIFFERENT combo of factors, but FIREFLY really was about things bigger than just Joss. It was about the stars aligning for Joss.

I had also wanted to comment on why Joss will never have the broad influence of Abrams, but that's a post for another day.

KPO

Sometimes you own the libs. Sometimes, the libs own you.

I'd be pleasantly surprised.

Sometimes in story writing I think everything just comes together. Even if Joss scripted another project as good, would he have been able to cast it as perfectly as Firefly?

It's not personal. It's just war.

I think he has the talent. I think he's a little gun shy. Like now he's constantly second guessing things and wondering if the network will be ok with each idea. Dollhouse probably didn't help with that. The idea basically was a problem right from the get go. Had to halt production and refilm the pilot and all that. That can't be good for his confidence.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. I think his next series needs to be more mainstream. At least the general setup needs to be something that mass audiences can understand. Doctors, Lawyers, an office, Police, a group of friends in a big city, whatever. Just something basic that doesn't need a number of episodes to establish. Kind of annoying but Buffy and Angel probably fall into that category now that the vampire craze has hit. In their time though they needed to establish a whole different world for the audience to really get into the shows. That seems to be a huge stumbling block for Joss shows. Mass audiences don't seem to invest in shows that way too often.

I think Lost really took a nose dive after its first season, but I also think it's a great example of what Joss could do. Start a show with something basic and understandable like a plane crash with survivor on a seemingly deserted island. People get that. You can get it across in the time of a commercial. You can describe it to your friends in a sentence. Lost took that setup and then worked the crazy scifi stuff in over time. It actually worked pretty well that they threw in a polar bear in the pilot episode because it was out of place and stuck out. It was a great hook. It told the audience that everything was not perfectly normal but it wasn't something super natural. If Joss can focus on hooking the audience and slowly revealing the craziness of a show then I think he could find mainstream success on TV. No more brain image imprinted "dolls" in the first episode.

Unquestionably he has the talent.
What he needs to do is produce something else with the degree of commercial success of Buffy or Angel.
He does that, he'll have enough leverage to be allowed to produce something as great as Firefly, or even go back and do Firefly some more.

And if he ever does another TV show, he needs to take it to cable. He can be creative and edgy on cable. Network just isn't a good fit for him.
