Any word on a series of Firefly action figures being made to coincide with the movie? If Universal has not thought of the idea yet, perhaps big box office receipts might prod them into action. They have made toys based on some awful movies before, so why not for a good one? How cool would it be to have a whole set of the BDHs to play with and display proudly in your home? I'd love to have a toy Serenity to hang from my ceiling next to a reaver ship and one of those ugly Alliance jobs.
One of this site's members (Sorry, don't remember your name) made a great Jayne figure. It was love at first sight, but he needs friends to go on adventures with, and to betray for good money.
Does Universal have a suggestion site. I think we should make a big push for toys once the movie becomes a hit (and a trilogy?). We all remember how much fun we had with our Star Wars toys. I want my children to have the same fun with the Firefly crew.
Mal's one of the greatest sci-fi legends of all time for God's sake. The man deserves a doll!

I was just saying to my friend the other day how awesome it would be to have the BDH prominently on my DVD shelf, alongside the Bride and the Alien.

"You've just gotta go ahead and change the captain of your brainship, because he's drunk at the wheel."

I really wish they would make some Firefly action figures. I've custom-made some for the 'Firefly' TV series, but it is really difficult without good head sculpts.

Whether they do official figures or not, I intend to make another wave of 'Serenity' figures wearing their movie outfits... dodgy heads and all. If I can get decent promo photos, I might even do it before the movie is released.

Mine are all one-of-a-kind hand-made jobs but 3000 professionally sculpted and factory-produced copies of each figure would be fantastic. Then everyone could have one of each!

A member of my BTVS Figs forum is going to host a discussion with several toy manufactures, including DST (who have the Buffy/Angel licence) at Wizard World. I'll ask him to enquire about the Firefly/Serenity licence.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

No "official" word yet on anything other than trading cards for Serenity, but I am keeping my fingers crossed for action figures and a model of Serenity. I would love to have some action figures (well done ones mind you, perhaps by McFarlane) to set on my display shelf in the den.

You know, my mind changed about halfway through reading your post. At first, I was thinking that action figures would be a bit much...but I was only picturing the crew members. Then, when you mentioned a Serenity, Reaver, and Alliance ship models, I said to myself, "Well golly gee, that'd be neato-keen!" ...Well, something like that. So yes, it would be awesome. I don't think I'd be too interested in crew members, but ship models would be very high on my things-to-buy list.

I also REALLY wanna see them make some t-shirts based on the ones Jayne wears. He's had some very cool designs.

As BrownCoat1 said, MacFarlane would be the perfect choice if they were to make Serenity action figures.

Which really begs the question, what accessories and special kung-fu grip type accoutrements would these action figures have?

Wash would obviously come with his own set of dinosaur action figures...

(Howard Roark Laughed? I finally get around to reading The Fountainhead and the references are everywhere!)

Jayne's kung fu grip would come in handy when he's in his bunk.

Bad biotech!

I would be really interested in these, also. It would be awesome to see a River with a knife and Jayne with a chest cut...

I have some McFalane figures, yes they are very detailed, but they are also prone to breaking and difficult to stand up.

Ok if you're planning to keep them in the box, not so good if you like to stand all your figures together.

They also tend to fit into the "only looks good in one position" range of toys, all those joints might give it a lot of movement, but it will look very strange if its not in the pose it shipped in.

Just to clarify (as someone who's fairly into toy production and collecting):

"Action Figures" toys that have some special features, like Star Wars toys with magnets in their hands to replicate force powers, or He-Man toys with spring-loaded "punching" action.

"(Collectible/Collector) Figures" toys that are carefully sculpted, conveying every fold of cloth and wrinkle of skin in plastic, like the Buffy or Star Trek figures.

Both types have their downsides. As biotech notes, McFarlane's figures tend to be one-pose only, but action figures tend to sacrifice articulation and accuracy in favour of the gimmick (like a "speed-draw Mal" having no waist-rotation, and a spring-loaded right arm that can only sit in two positions [gun-in-holster and gun-straight-forward]).

I'm having nightmares of those early Star Wars Revival figures in the 90s, when everyone looked like bodybuilders --we'd get Wash and Simon with Jayne-like physiques, and Zoe, Kaylee, and River would look like Inara clones.

The best bet would be to get whoever does the Star Trek figures --they're heavily articulated, photorealistic down to the last stitch (because they show up on-set and scan 3D images of the actors in costume), and come with numerous accessories, play/display sets, and sometimes variant hands/heads for display purposes.

I would be interested in the action figures.

I also read on another board about some guys who would be interested in blow up dolls of certain female characters.

i dont want action figures really, i wont be playing with them and taking it into the bathtub haha(im just speaking for myself), i want some detailed gorgeous looking figures for display. and no one does it better than mcfarlane toys. they do the best detail work and make them look so true to the actual person its insane.

i personally dont want to see gi joe versions of firefly characters. the type id see in my little cousins floor in his bedroom. i dont want a fisher price "my first serenity" cheap toy. i want a grown up toy, which mcfarlane toys make.

thats just me though.

That'd be so cool!!!

It'd go on the shelf with Wash's dinosaurs (and there's a toy tie-in waiting to happen).

I would absolutely LOVE 1/6 scale action figures and I think Sideshow is the company to do them. Not only are they the master of this field they have an added advantage being able re-use many of their existing knives and molds for these figures. Just as action figures are made with molds, clothing (for toys and people) is made with knives that cut big blocks of cloth in to the individual pieces that make up a clothing item. So by re-using the knives on these figures they can save the money and time because a.) They already have the knives b.) They don’t have to waste time trying different patterns and cuts to find what will work c.) They know how the clothing will fit on their standard bodies.

The same can be said for the molded components (heads, hands, foot wear, and accessories) but in reverse. Pieces made for a Firefly line can be re-used for the Buffy/Angel line especially since 4 of the 9 cast members appeared on those shows (3 of which were big multi-episode baddies). Here are some examples of what I’m talking about.

Matt, who hosts the BTVSFigs site served as moderator for a discussion panel in Wizard World Chicago last Sunday. With representatives from Inkworks, Diamond Select Toys, Palisades, and Gentle Giant.

This is what he had to report on the subject of Firefly/Serenity action figures:

"So far, Inkworks is the only license-holder for Serenity. I did ask DST about this and was told that so far, they've considered it. We'll have to wait and see what happens as the release of Serenity draws closer. If they DID produce figures, they would most likely be in the same 6-inch scale as the Buffy and Angel figures, though. That was pretty much all the info available."
