What's the movie file (WMV, AVI, MOV, other)?

Go here:

http://www.videohelp.com/

Use the EDIT section on the left to find an appropriate editing program for the movie's format (.avi .mpg etc). There may be a guide with it as well.
A lot of the programs can be found for free but it all depends what format you are starting with and what format you want to end up with.

If you have Nero then one of the bundled progs is an editor. It's not very good but it may be enough to do what you need.

Good luck.
Ask for more help if needed.

"avi" is just a container, could be many different formats. you could download a free program called "mediainfo" which will tell you everything you need to know about the video file in question.

If the "avi" file in question is compatible with "virtualdub" then that program is an excellent free editor which also has the advantage of not having to re-encode the video thus retaining all the quality.
