HITFIX.COM - I went to Dark Horse Comics' Joss Whedon panel yesterday afternoon curious to hear what, if anything, he had to say about the making of "The Avengers." Instead, the superhero movie barely came up, but Whedon did add some more fodder to my pre-Comic-Con discussion about how certain series translate from one medium to another...

Um.... huge even? "We now have the rights .... move forward..." powerful words. I hereby take the liberty to jump to conclusions.

"But more interestingly - especially if "Firefly" happens to be your favorite Whedon project (as it clearly was to many people in the Indigo Ballroom) - when a fan asked if he'd be telling the backstory of more "Firefly" characters in comics, Whedon said that "We now have license to not only tell backstory but move forward with these characters, too. It would be interesting to know what happens next." JW

I think it's pretty clear that means the comic book rights only. I doubt they have the rights for more film in the verse.

All in all it sounded like the only thing we're going to see anytime soon besides Avengers is maybe Dr. Horrible 2. Beside that it's all comics.

I don't care if Joss sees this, but I don't trust him to move the story forword. He's created something that has become bigger than him and bigger and more important than anyone had imagined, and to reconfine it back to the wims of one person, even himself, I feel could be problematic. That's why I like the idea of him doing more pre DBM stuff, like the comic books etc. But I don't like the idea of anything post BDM that he would do because it would be official, set in stone, unchangeable, and undoable, could cause irreparable harm to things. That's just how I feel.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

They sure are, and if that is how the story of our crew continues, I'm okay with that. I'll be the first to line up and lay down my coin. Heck, I'll be trumpeting about it on every message board, at every con, and to every person I know.

I figure at the very least a Serenity comic will do as well as the Buffy comic and look how long that has been running.

It doesn't much matter to me WHAT medium new stories might come in, or if they're before or after the movie, I'd just be happy to have new stuff on a semi-regular basis.

Judging by how Joss and Zack expanded the timeframe between the series and the movie in The Shepherd's Tale by at least two years, my guess is most of the comics are still going to be pre-movie. Not much other reason to do that.

Plus with Those Left Behind, Better Days, Float Out and Shepherd's Tale, I'm getting this impression they just don't want to let go of Wash and Book yet.

And Joss may still be holding on to hopes he can get a sequel or mini-series or webisodes or something.
