Joss Whedon seems like the kind of person who would do the New York Times crossword puzzle if he had the time. He also seems like the kind of person who would file away ideas, such as character names, for future use.

So perhaps it's more than a coincidence that several years before Joss was even inspired to start thinking about Firefly (let alone Hoban "Wash" Washburne), the September 24, 1997, NYT crossword contained:

- the answer "HOBAN" (18-Down, "White House architect James") and

- the unrelated clue "Actress Washbourne" (56-Down, "MONA")

When Joss is doing press for The Avengers, make sure he gets asked about this every single time.

Why is this important to you?

Do you write the crosswords or are you having an ah-ha moment or something?

I'm not saying it couldn't happen... If you put enough monkeys in a room with enough typewriters, theoretically you COULD eventually come up with the Declaration of Independance...soooo anything is possible-I suppose...

But I don't get the feeling there is a high degree of probability here....

And If I ever got the chance to ask Joss anything, it would be more along the lines of "When are we getting some damn novels??!"

That is an interesting coincidence, wouldn't it be funny if that's really where he got it? I get ideas from funny places too.

Pure speculation, but I imagine if we start looking at famous Westerns, we might find some name inspiration. For example, it seems a bit coincidental to me that one of the heroes in SILVERADO is named Mal, while one of the villains is named Cobb.

That movie also has minor charcters named Phoebe and Hobart, which I can easily see morphing into Kaylee ("Hmm. I like the cadence of Phoebe, but FRIENDS ruinded it) and Hoban ("Hey, wouldn't it be funny if Wash's first name was Hobart? Hm. Maybe I should make it sound more "space-y").

I'm not implying in any way that I think that's what actually, consciously happened. Just throwing out an additional theory.
